Wonderful and quite rare. Original, 1805 Manuscript Ship’s Logbook for the American Ship“Venus” on a 210 day voyage from Boston to Amsterdam, on to the Russian Port of Kronstadt and back to Boston. The"Venus" was an American Sailing Packet Ship out of Baltimore which traveled both the Transatlantic and Caribbean trade route. During the War of 1812 the Venus was captured by British Privateers as well as by American Privateers and the history of the ship is a somewhat confusing and entangled story that is not atypical of merchant vessels of the early 19th century. This fascinating. Manuscript Ship’s Log measures approx. 8” by 12 1/2” and contains 86 pages, of which 55 have been used to detail daily entries. The Log is written within a partially printed, blank book specifically manufactured for this purpose and titled"The Seaman's ... moreJournal: Being an Easy and Correct Method of Keeping the Daily Reckoning of a Ship, During the Course of Her Voyage. Presented is an excellent example of a Walker Trident Electric log instrument head. Made by Thomas Walker& Son. Ltd of Birmingham, England, it looks in excellent condition. It has some scuffing and minor spotting on its case which will polish out. It features an instrument head with a white porcelain face. And analog counters with black Arabic numbers for distance run. It does not include the electric wire, taffrail register or rotor. This is one of Walker's most advanced logs. It was introduced in 1902 and allowed the navigator to remain in the pilot house to take his readings rather than at the vessel's stern where the log register was located. Ship's Log Book Box/Chest, 19th/20th C. Antique, Excellent Size, Handmade
This is a handmade. And full-dovetailed, ship's log book box or chest from an unknown vessel. Looking mostly at the hardware, I believe it is from the late 19th to the early 20th C. Is is a excellent size with great proportions, 22.75"W, 19.75"D, 9.5"H, with an 18" x 15" x 6.25" usable interior. Please see the pictures with the wine bottle for reference. It is primarily made of a hardwood, probably oak, and it is extremely sturdy and strong. It weighs 44 pounds and the sides are 1.75" thick. There is no play in the hinges or clasp. When I acquired this chest it was very dirty(caked in dirt) so we cleaned it as carefully as possible to retain the original surfaces. To provide some protection for the wood, I used a high quality silicone free wax that could be removed if desired. At one time, I believe ... morethis chest was painted with a pattern that can be seen on close inspection. The holes in the bottom allowed the chest to be bolted to a stable surface of the ship. This Walker's Trident ship log is used for measure current whether from a ship or from anywhere over moving water from what i gather. Not my forte folks! The main unit is about 10 lbs and the other two pieces weigh in at 5 lbs each. Everything appears to be present and in functional free moving condition. The main gauge has a front diameter of 5 1/4 inches and is about 10 1/2 inches from front to back. The"wheel" is about 10 1/2 in diameter. KNOTMASTER LOG(Model KDO) Ship Speed Meter! Made by Thomas Walker of; Walker& Sons in England. Thos. 58 Oxford Street, Birmingham, B5 5NX, UK. Included is the Knotmaster and mounting bracket. One"new" one used rotator. Four sinkers. And assorted lines. There appears to be an original oil squeeze bottle, and fragments of the original sticker remaining. It also has a small cellophane package(contents unknown) We simply do not wish to open this. But, it appears to be a collar, or bushing, or spacer, or sleeve of some sort, and one white plastic tool/holder. And of course, it’s original wood box. Also, the"new" rotator has it’s original tag, with instructions. See pics! Considering it’s age. This unit appears to us to be in Very Good, if not Excellent Condition, though we're no experts! It has what appears to be lite ... morenormal oxidization on the used rotator, and none to extremely light in spots on the new rotator. In addition, two out of four sinkers have a light oxidization. The amount of oxidization on each part obviously varies according to it’s use and exposure, which as you may know, is normal for this item. Understanding dad as we did, we are confident this unit works as intended, and is fully functional. Nevertheless, we have not had the pleasure of actually running it. Note: Experts requiring any test to be run(of it’s functionality) will have to provide us SAFE& ACCEPTABLE methods of doing so. As to not harm the unit! We will then do our best to accommodate! This is a wonderful bit of old kit and it comes in its original fitted pine box measuring 38 by 17 by 14 cm and weighing just over 4.5 kilos all in. I dont know the exact age but judging by the reference to"Motor launches" I imagine it to date from the 1920s or so. I can remember the deck officers using a log like this on a 1950s ship I was working on in the 1970s going across from Cape Town to Buenos Aires. It was cloudy and foggy all the way and they could not get sunsights so navigated on a dead reckoning basis using the patent log and our engine revolutions to estimate position. When we missed the mouth of the River Plate by 90 miles there was much banter between deck officers and us engineers about ... morewhose data was wrong! Of course we engineers placed great emphasis upon the fact that our data was based on facts that could be recorded and were written down in the engine room log. So therefore it must be their conjecture that was innacurate! The enamel dial on this log is not damaged and all in all it is a wonderful item that would polish up well but looks pretty good as it is in shabby chic mode! Low start and no reserve. I would guess, to the 1920s-40s period. It was purchased at an estate sale for a former Navy officer. I will be listing his uniforms soon. It may be US Navy but it is so tarnished no markings are visible. It is roughly 14 inches long not including the rope or attachment ring. It is in very good, very tarnished, as found condition. T. WALKER'S HARPOON SHIP LOG London, 19th Century
Offered from a local seacoast NH estate is this bronze Harpoon Ship Log made by T. Walker. London. It was found in an old sea chest in the attic of an early Dover, NH home. Three dials indicate tens of miles, miles, and 1/2 miles are on the porcelain. As photo'd, the log door closes when turned(a bit tough as it has not been cleaned, or WD-40'd) There is some damage to the dial as seen in a photo. I think it is from about 1860s-70s. The log was thrown off the back(tethered) and recorded speed/mileage traveled. Pretty neat for mid-19th century. The dial is also marked; T Walker's, Patent, Harpoon Ship Log, A.3, London. Measures approx. 16" tip to end, where there is a fin that turns when the water to register travel. There is some corrosion/copper rust on this fin, but spins freely. Welcome to my listing for this old brass boats speed log. The log is made by T. Walker& Son of Birmingham. The log is in good condition and polished up nicely.
