A chip log consists of a wooden board attached to a line(the log-line) The log-line has a number of knots tied in it at uniform spacings. The log-line is wound on a reel to allow it to be paid out easily in use. When the navigator wished to determine the speed of his vessel. A sailor dropped the log over the stern of the ship. The log would act as a drogue and remain roughly in place while the vessel moved away. The log-line was allowed to run out for a fixed period of time. The speed of the ship was indicated by the length of log-line passing over the stern during that time. The log has been used by mariners for a long time. The first occurrence of a description of the device in print was in A Regiment for the Sea by William Bourne in 1574. Initially. The log-line was not knotted and the length was measured directly on the line. With the ... moreintroduction of the nautical mile as a standard unit of measure at sea in the 15th century, the line began to be marked at equal intervals proportional to the nautical mile and to the time interval used for measurement. Initially, the markings were in the form of knots in the line. Later, knotted cords were worked into the log-line. Our Chip Log consists of a reel that is 23" long by 5" high and a log that is 10" wide by 10" high. They are made from 3/4" thick hardwood treated with linseed oil. Offering a vintage a ANTIQUE WALKERS CHERUB Mark II SHIPS LOG. It is rare item to find. This is the 1st one I have ever seen. It is about 10 1/8" Long and the front is approx. 3 1/2" in Diameter. The actual face is 3" in diameter and is porcelain I do believe. Has a rotating arm on the bottom. That would fit into a mounted piece on the ship and then this would swing around. Item is HEAVY. This Ship's Log belonged to my father. Included in this listing will be some notes he made about the log and a copy of a New York Times article about the ship from 1852. The following is a synopsis of the log and history of the Susan Soule written by my father. Manuscript Ship’s Log. Brig Susan Soule, October17, 1846– March 9, 1848. Softcover. Oblong Folio(8 ½ x 13¾” of 80 pages, handwritten in ink. Some slight foxing and discoloration, but overall in very good condition. Describes arrivals and departures,wind and weather, latitude and longitude, shipboard life and commercial activities(such as“taking on lumber” and other vessel sightings. The Brig Susan Soule, captained by George Bacon and Charles Bacon, carried cargo mainly along the Eastern and Southern coasts of the United States and in the Caribbean. This well-preserved ... moreand legible manuscript ship’s log records the details of two voyages during the years 1846-1848. The first voyage, lasting from October 1846 to February 1847, takes the Susan Soule from Portland, Maine, to Puerto Rico, to New Orleans, to Charleston, South Carolina, and finally to New York, where the voyage ends. The second voyage, lasting from October 1847 to March 1848, takes the Susan Soule from New York to Charleston, to Havana, to New Orleans, and again back to New York. The log ends here. Later available records, from the 1850’s,show the Susan Soule continuing to operate in the same and other waters. On October 22, 1851, she was cleared at Portland to sail for Guayana Region, Venezuela. On January 21, 1852, she arrived at Portland from Bonaire, a Caribbean Island. Although mainly an East Coast ship, she was cleared at San Francisco on January 11, 1855, for sailing to the San Blas Islands, Panama. 1897-1899 Ships Log or Diary for HMS Fearless Search Fearless was a torpedo cruiser of 1850 tons. Armed with four 5 inch guns and three torpedo tubes. She was built by Barrow SB(Vickers) and was launched 20 March 1886. Originally commissioned at Portsmouth, she served mainly in the Mediterranean but also saw service at the Cape of Good Hope in 1899 before paying off in Portsmouth in 1900. She was re-commissioned for the China Station in November 1901 at Sheerness and was finally sold at Portsmouth on 11 July 1905. Most of the log book refers to 1899 and service around the Cape and at times it is more diary than log. 50 pages, densely written. Condition is very good. Or log reader, a large brass spinner, an iron balance ring and a brass weight attached to the spinner. Both the meter and the spinner are marked as being a Walkers Cherub Ships Log, T.W. Mark II) 900. The meter will mark speed up to 100 knots. Though it is good working order. These are now used for display purposes. I can make out some of the writing but I am not fluent in French. It is signed by a Captain Boucheron? The document mentions a Captain Willem Willemse as being the Captain of the Ariadne for at least part of the ships voyage. It shows being through several ports. The document mentions tobacco and arms? The watermark is from a famous paper maker named De Erven de Blauw. This is a very scarce item. The piece being sold is/are the one/s pictured above. Old Walker Cherub mark 111 ships/boats log in original wooden box. Dates to around the mid 20th century. This is a instrument that was used to measure the distance the boat/ship had travelled. It came from a house clearance sale so don't have much info about it. There is instructions on the paper label inside lid. It is all made out of solid heavy brass and looks fairly complete to my limited knowledge. The only think that it might have had that is not here is a thing like a steering wheel that I see some of the other logs listed has. But don't know if this had that or not. All looks to be in fairly good condition with no damage that I can find. Would benefit from a good clean/polish up. You are buying this vintage Walker's Taffrail ships log that was made in the early 1900's in England. I have no way of testing the unit for any accuracy but nothing leads me to believe that it would not work however I an selling this as is without returns. Please be aware of that before bidding. Having said that this thing is a precision beauty[ my dad was a tool& die maker and taught me the meaning of quality in tools] and appears to function. The brass fins are free of any dings or bends so the accuracy should be true when spinning. On the old label inside the box it reads for up to 20 knots speed. The box has dovetail joints but looks to have been painted at some time. It is quite sturdy and holds the items well. The mechanics on the dial piece turn as intended with no issues. No cracks. A fascinating read. This is the journal of a crew member on board the SS GARFIELD in 1893 The SS Garfield was built at Harland& Wolff for the North Western Shipping Company. Completed on 19th February 1882 It is difficult to work out what role on board ship that the writer had. They were clearly not a run of the mill sailor. Having free time as the entry on 13th December states: I was fishing on the boom all morning. Another clue is a list of books in the same handwriting. It is headed Humble publishing company New York. This may be a list of books purchased. Titles include: Notes on earthquakes. Force& Energy, The conservation of energy. Etc etc. As well as many standard entries regarding weather and the sightings of other vessels. There are some very interesting entries. Not everyday has an entry.
