OLD RUDDER BRONZE PINTLES BRASS BRONZE WOOD BOAT SAIL SAILBOAT
This is a sailboat rudder we found at a local salvage yard. The entire thing measures about 27+1/2 inches long x 6+1/4 inches wide. The wood handles are 20 inches long. The pintles are bronze and have a diameter of 5/16 inches. Not sure what metal the rudder itself is. It is a little beat up and worn but would be great for reuse or maybe decoration in a nautical themed room. We accept Paypal. Buyer pays actual shipping! No handling fees! This is a bronze rudder pintle we found at a local estate sale. It has a 5/8 inch diameter tapered pin that measures 4+5/8 inches long. The arms measure 5+3/8 inches long and 1+1/4 inches tall. THE OTHER RUDDER PARTS ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THIS AUCTION} It's about 6" long and 5/8" at the thickest end. The head of the spike is almost an inch in diameter. While the photos show it to be pitted and corroded this is not the case! Under all the tarnish is heavy solid bronze with a very high copper content. This spike was taken from a mid 1700s rudder recovered in the 1940s in Penobscot Bay. Maine by a commercial diver working there. The rudder, when whole, was estimated ... moreto be about 8' high{please see photos} It is believed to be the rudder from the Frigate Albany which wrecked there in 1782. The age of the rudder and where it was found coincides correctly with the 1782 sinking of the Albany The following excerpt is from a Boston publication. Last trip of H.M.S. ALBANY- Boston to Penobscot Bay, Albany was part of a small British fleet that defeated an American naval force during the Penobscot Expedition of 1779. By 1782. She was declared unfit for battle and demoted to a prison ship. After discharging prisoners in Boston, she headed toward Penobscot where she was wrecked on the Triangles. For many years the wreck reportedly was visible at low water. Since Albany was a prison ship when she wrecked. She probably no longer had guns on board. The wood of the rudder was rotted to a point making restoration impossible. Therefore it was burned off leaving the two pintals and the spikes which I'm offering here on eBay.

Vintage wood sailboat rudder, Tiller and extension - with bronze firrings
From a Estate Sale at a Beautiful large Rhode Island mansion. Which was owned by a Shipping Mogul and Ex ship Captain. These items are from his private"museum" collection. They were displayed on the wall of his den along with many, many other boating artifacts- and two very large early portrait paintings in Magnificent Baroque frames, of he and his wife. The portraits will be offered in the near future. My purpose with this Estate was to buy frames. But acquired these in"lot" offerings. Large Antique Brass or Bronze Rudder
The weight of this is close to 11lbs. It is 22 inches long, the rudder is 12 inches long, the top of the blade is 6.5 inches the bottom of the blade is 4 3/4 inches This is from a collection of a 94 year old gentleman that passed away. He was in the Navy and loved boats and ships. So much so that when he got out he became a boat shop owner that built top flight boats and bought and sold various boats for years and years. He owned the name Top Flight for his boats until Top Flight Golf came along and aquired the copyrighted name from him. He passed away at the age of 94 last Thanksgiving. I am selling some of his prized Maritime collectables to help his wife out with her finances. She is 92 and now living with one of my best friends that is 61 years old. We don't really know much about these propellers or rudders, just that he thought ... morethey were worth money and holding on to. If I can be of any additional assistance please send me a message. One final tidbit, when he passed away he had a boat in his shop that he was building from scratch and fabricating the pieces.
