The glass window to the compass is cracked and the Compass Card paint has peeled. You are bidding on a WWII ships"Sestrel" Brass Binnacle. It is in fair condition. The compass is intact, full of liquid and in full working order, the outer brass case has a dink on the top and is missing a burner and door, there is a serial number on top'BB2712' when i got this at auction 10 years ago or more, it was referenced to a Frigate Boat, it stands 9" high and the base is 8.5" in diameter, overall 10.5" wide, see pictures thanks Shelia.

The binnacle is in a used. Vintage condition. The brass lost part of its finish, has minimum signs of oxidization, with some scratching, minor nicks and general use wear. This is an authentic ships binnacle compass made by Carl Plath Company of Hamburg Germany with signature on the compass as seen in pictures. The company started making compasses in 1876. This particular compass came from a deceased estate of an old man who collected Nautical items and is the real article. The compass in in great condition apart from a couple of small dents just below the glass at the front. The item is in perfect working order and has the burner and wick fully in tact. Circa 1840s. An almost identical instrument is listed in the National Maritime Museum collection Object ID 0456 The museum's decription of their instrument reads; Object ID NAV0456, Description A mariner's compass set in gimbals in a wooden box. Balanced with wax. Graduated quadrantally and in 1/4 points. The card of this compass was replaced and is dated 1859. It is inscribed'late Bradford. 99 Minories, London, nautical instrument maker' This would indicate that John Omer had taken over George Bradford's business. Date made circa 1840. Which allows the instrument to remain level as the ship pitches& rolls. inside its original oak box. The actual compass measures approx 7 inches(180mm) in diameter. The box is approx 9 3/4 inches(250mm) square, by 6 inches(150mm) tall. It is in good original condition with very light wear consistent with its age. But with no damage or repairs. It works as it should. Some putty is missing from around the glass, there is no box lid. This is a fine example of its type. By a well know London instrument maker. A rare chance to own a similar instrument to one in the National Maritimec Museum collection. Please see the photos for compass card markings. Here we have a beautiful large COLLECTIBLE SOLID BRASS BINNACLE COMPASS/NAUTICAL COMPASS W/ OIL LAMP and a sestral compass very heavy. I dont know to much about this item as it came with my boat but judging by the quality of the boat and the beautiful equipment in it and the fact it is a sestral compass I would think it is genuine. It has a little oil lamp in it that works and lights up the face at night. It has a few tiny dents here and there related to age but nothing major. I love this but as I now live on my boat full time I have to get rid of some things for space and it takes up a fair bit and I dont use it hence the sale.
