1800s SHIPS CAULKING MALLET From the estate of a second generation barge pilot that worked on the Ohio River. I received this mallet at an estate auction in Marietta Ohio several years ago. These mallets were used to drive oakum caulking between wood joints to form a watertight seal on a ship's hall. This mallet is in good condition with a oak head that has iron rings at the leading edge also two are in straps adjacent to the handle. The handle has a slightly different finish to the rest of the mallet and has a small nail and it just above the head. The mallet also comes with two caulking chisels one is marked with what appears to be initials EC? The other one looks to be handmade(see pictures) 14 day return policy. Very Unusual Old Antique Shipwright's Caulking Mallet or Hammer Ironwood
Antique shipwright's caulking mallet. Or hammer. This is probably one of the oldest caulking mallets that I have personally ever seen. I think it could be made usable but I feel that it should probably be in a collection& not used. Entire mallet weighs 2&1/2# ironwood head is 13&3/4" long& 1&3/4" diameter inside the steel rings. It has a very unusual head that is hard to describe. Center piece is roughly 5" long& rounded top& bottom, 2&3/4" wide on the rounded top& bottom, a little over 1" tall across the flat sides with two brass pinions side to side. One"end" of the mallet head measures 4&1/4" long, the other end measures 4&1/2" both ends being slotted. Both faces were very feathered& I just barely faced them with a sharp saw. Rings are larger ... morethan any I have seen& are roughly an inch wide. Handle is probably not original, looks like old oak& has 5 or 6 pin holes in it that may have been from powder post beetles. If they were they are long gone. Handle has a rectangular head that measures 1&1/4" by 1" is 11&1/8" long from bottom of mallet head to end. Handle is loose enough that I can pull it& ship that way. I can find no maker's name on this mallet. Like the other 2 caulking hammers that I have listed this is from the estate of an old shipwright in the Port Townsend/ Port Hadlock area of the Olympic Northwest. Up for auction is a Vintage SHIPWRIGHT CAULKING MALLET/HAMMER! Super Nice! The Head is attached firmly to it's original handle with zero wobble. 20" long with the head being just over 11"s and is 2 1/2"in diameter. Some looseness with the iron rings but they do not come off. Nice collector piece or very much useable! See the PIC.S for best discription. Everything I sell is as i found it. AS IS. Here we have a great vintage shipwrights CAULKING MALLET. Each section is 14" long and the face of the mallet portion is 2" in diam. Made of lignum vitae. The hardest wood there is as far as I know. Sells for $80.oo a board foot. This is either hardly used or NOS as both faces are clean. It would be hard to upgrade this piece and even harder to find a better one!

Antique Shipwright's Caulking Mallet - Very Nice Example with iron bands!
A beautiful 19th century caulking mallet. These were used. And still are, to hammer oakum into the seams between the boards of a wooden ship. This one measures 14 1/2" Long and about 13" Wide. Aloha. Up for bid is a vintage mallet found an estate sale in Lahaina years ago. Great opportunity to own a piece of Hawaiian history. This Mallette is in great condition for its age. It is 15 inches long, with a 16 inch handle. The iron rings on the ends are 2 1/4 inches wide. Please look at all the photographs. Vintage Live Oak Shipwright's Caulking Mallet with 4 Caulking Irons
This is a beautiful caulking mallet in very good condition. The head measures 15-5/8" and is just under 2" in diameter at the ends inside the iron ring. It has a 16" long tapered handle and the assembled mallet weighs a little over 3 pounds. With it as part of the package are 4 caulking irons- one straight iron 7" long(with a chip out of one corner) one curved iron 6-3/4" long; one curved iron 5-3/8" long and one straight iron 5" long. This is a working set of mallet and irons of the very finest materials that reflects the quality of the way things were done in the"old days" I have owned this mallet for close to 60 years and I have always thought that it was made of Lignam Vitae- Ironwood. I have just discovered that the reason that it is such a good mallet is that it is more likely made not of ... moreIronwood. But of Live Oak- a wood that actually was much preferred for caulking mallets. As I said above- it really rings.

VINTAGE SHIPWRIGHT'S CAULKING MALLET WOODEN BOAT 12.5" HEAD No res
Here is a really nice condition caulking mallet. The mallet head is approx. 12.5" inches long and handle is approximately 24" long. I am unsure what type of wood is used for the head but it is beautiful. I was told it was possibly iron wood? Please see pictures for condition as I am not an expert but I believe it to be in good condition. The handle has a small amount of wiggle but does NOT come off. The irons are hand forged, along with the rivet type hardware holding the hammer together. A beautiful piece of history! A great size for displaying or even use for the ambitious individual!
