Brass Walker Cherub Ship Log with W. Ludolph Instrumentation. I do not know that much about this item. Looks like the original wooden box. The lid needs a litlle help. I did clean this item up just a litlle bit. The other piece I would point out is that one of the fins. The rope need to be re-attached or replaced. It has a W. Ludolph instrument with it. As I understand it this is a good quality instrument. I beleive this is used for distance and speed. I can not attest to accuracy however no way to test it. Please have a look at the pictures. Offering a vintage a ANTIQUE WALKERS CHERUB Mark II SHIPS LOG. It is rare item to find. This is the 1st one I have ever seen. It is about 10 1/8" Long and the front is approx. 3 1/2" in Diameter. The actual face is 3" in diameter and is porcelain I do believe. Has a rotating arm on the bottom. That would fit into a mounted piece on the ship and then this would swing around. Item is HEAVY. Walker's patent"Cherub" mark II. Ship's log. The log was used to record a ship's speed. A line would be cast in the sea with a fish or spinner attached to the end. The ship's speed would make the line spin and the spin would display the boat's speed on the speedometer. The Cherub. Mark II was made from around 1900- 1930. It is in great condition. Antique 1900's Brass Taffrail Log Rotor Assembly. Signed Cherub which is a British model manufactured by Thomas Walker. A very well known maker of nautical instruments. This piece also comes with the round wheel governor and attached sections of heavy braided rope. Register instrument not available the governor wheel attaches to the register instrument which would be mounted on the ship. The assembly is dragged through the water on a tow line and the register measures the rotors revolutions and converts them to nautical miles. Rotor is signed Cherub. Some wear and tear showing from use but in decent shape and is usable still or is a great nautical collectible. Made in England by Thos Wlaker& Son Ltd 58 Oxford Street Birmingham. It is made from brass. It is quite heavy(over the 5 pound limit of my delicate scale) It is about 7 pounds. The Brass part. Is about 9 1/2 inches long. Not tested. And although a display piece, it appears to be working- for example when I rotate the rear hoop, the lower right needle turns slowly as expected(works both ways) These items were used by dragging a propeller behind a boat. And each turn of the propeller corresponded to distance- thereby recording the distance travelled. Cosmetic condition as shown- dial has some minor damage. And there are some numbers scratched into the exterior near the lower front end. For sale is a very nice antique Ship's Log. speedometer) It was made by Thomas Walker. It is a"Walker's Cherub" and is complete with the meter. Or log reader, a large brass spinner, an iron balance ring and a brass weight attached to the spinner. Both the meter and the spinner are marked as being a Walkers Cherub Ships Log, T.W. Mark II) 900. The meter will mark speed up to 100 knots. Though it is good working order. These are now used for display purposes. To that end someone has at one time polished all of the brass and then sealed it with a coat of lacquer to inhibit tarnishing, keeping it in that fresh polished look forever. Old Walker Cherub mark 111 ships/boats log in original wooden box. Dates to around the mid 20th century. This is a instrument that was used to measure the distance the boat/ship had travelled. It came from a house clearance sale so don't have much info about it. There is instructions on the paper label inside lid. It is all made out of solid heavy brass and looks fairly complete to my limited knowledge. The only think that it might have had that is not here is a thing like a steering wheel that I see some of the other logs listed has. But don't know if this had that or not. All looks to be in fairly good condition with no damage that I can find. Would benefit from a good clean/polish up. 1930s Walker`s Cherub MkIII ships log complete with spinner/ rotator. The clock head is solid brass. In excellent original condition, comes with tilt and swivel mount; the face is ceramic with 3 hands indicating distance travelled. The clock head is an original antique, the spinner is Cherub but looks to be a new unused item. I have seen these polished up and they look amazing, this example is untouched, the mechanism is free to turn but is not tested or calibrated. Please see the images below. You are buying this vintage Walker's Taffrail ships log that was made in the early 1900's in England. I have no way of testing the unit for any accuracy but nothing leads me to believe that it would not work however I an selling this as is without returns. Please be aware of that before bidding. Having said that this thing is a precision beauty[ my dad was a tool& die maker and taught me the meaning of quality in tools] and appears to function. The brass fins are free of any dings or bends so the accuracy should be true when spinning. On the old label inside the box it reads for up to 20 knots speed. The box has dovetail joints but looks to have been painted at some time. It is quite sturdy and holds the items well. The mechanics on the dial piece turn as intended with no issues. No cracks. Antique Ship Taffrail Speed Log Part T.W. Cherub T. Walker & Sons LTD England
An Antique Taffrail Speed Log in"as found" condition. This was part of the log that was used to measure a ship's speed before electrical gauges. A very nicely made piece with a nice patina to the brass. All of the vanes are marked T.W. CHERUB. One is marked T. WALKER. It measures 15 1/2" in length by 6" wide to the outside of the vanes. Walker Cherub taffrail log, Line Rotator Spinner
We are unsure of exactly what term is used for this piece but it is found with some Taffrail Logs. The diameter of the spinner measures apprx 10-1/2" The braided rope measures 18-1/2" long including the hook at the end. This is in good condition.

Antique T. Walker & Sons Cherub Nautical Mileage Speed LOG
I've had this old. Brass nautical speed log in my collection of maritime stuff for a long time and it's time it found a new home. The brass, bullet-shaped torpedo is hollow and measures 14" and is secured to a brass fixture by a braided rope. The manufacturer info is stamped on one of the blades and"T.W. Cherub and an anchor stamped on all the blades. It make a nice decoration for nautical themed rooms or man caves and is a real conversation starter. It would look very cool all polished.
