Antique ships Badge HMS Calton
This Royal Navy ships badge from HMS Calton. Has been in my possession since around 2000 when my dear friend Passed away. This plaque belonged to him. He was nearly 100 years old and once took a ship to Europe as a youngster. He developed a fondness for maritime but never could join the Navy as his foot was disfigured from having survived polio as a child. He spent much of his life working around books and taking in intellectual lectures and company. According to the back of the plaque this is circa 1870s. HOWEVER, after having done a little research it appears that ships in HMS Royal Navy did not begin to bear plaques like these until around 1900 when steam engines replaced sailing ships. The sailing ships were identified by their mast heads(i believe that is the term) Until heavy metal warships came along. The hardware appears to validate ... morethat this is of some vintage though the hanging hardware up top looks more contemporary. Likely a replacement. From my research this belonged to the HMS Calton. Royal Navy ships were all named after their predecessors but I can find nothing on the Calton that predates the year 1953: http:www.forces-war-records.co.uk/Unit-Info/2000 As you can see from the front of the plaque there is some damage resulting in disfigurement to the actual title. Please look at photos and ask any questions before buying. This is the limit of my knowledge. I apologize. It would have originally been fitted to one of the ships launches. ~ Dimensions ~ The piece has a height of 5.25 inches(13.5cm) A width of 5.5 inches(14cm) and a depth of 0.6 inches(2cm) It weighs 1Kg ~ Condition ~ The badge is in decent condition. ~ HMS Canterbury ~ HMS Canterbury is a C-Class Light Cruiser and was built on 28 October 1914. Launched on 21 December 1915, and completed in May 1916. Unlike the rest of the Cambrian subclass, Canterbury was armed with six torpedo tubes instead of the usual four. Commissioned into the Royal Navy in April or May(sources differ) 1916. Canterbury was attached to the 3rd Battle Squadron in the Grand Fleet, ... morecommanded by Captain Percy M. R. Royds, and participated in the Battle of Jutland on 31 May-1 June 1916. From 1916 to 1918, she was assigned to the 5th Light Cruiser Squadron, operating as part of Harwich Force in the North Sea to defend the eastern approaches to the Strait of Dover and English Channel. ~ HMS Cleopatra(Heavy Cruiser) Metal Ships Badge ~ A plaque of HMS Cleopatra. This shield shaped plaque features a depiction of the Egyptian Queen Cleopatra against a black background. The plaque is attached to a wooden mount by a screw. ~ HMS Cleopatra ~ HMS Cleopatra was a Dido-class cruiser of the Royal Navy. She was built by R. and W. Hawthorn. Leslie and Company, Limited(Hebburn-on-Tyne, UK) with the keel being laid down on 5 January 1939. She was launched on 27 March 1940, and commissioned on 5 December 1941. She returned to Chatham on 12 February 1953 to be paid off. In June of that year she took part in the Fleet Review to celebrate the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. On 15 December 1958. ~ HMS Devonshire 1927 Heavy Cruiser Ships Bronze Boat Badge ~ This bronze badge would have been fitted to one of the ships boats on board the County-class heavy cruiser HMS Devonshire which was launched in 1927 and ended service in 1954. The front depicts a shield with a crowned. Lion rampant. It is mounted on period oak. ~ Dimensions ~ The badge measures 8 inches(20.5cm) and 6.5 inches(16.5cm) wide The mount is 8.9 inches(22.5cm) tall and 8 inches(20.5cm) wide. The depth of the badge when mounted is 1.5 inches(3.8cm) The total weight is 1.93 kg. ~ Condition ~ The badge has a healthy patina overall with some oxide in the recesses. ~ HMS Derby Haven- Ships Badge- Loch-class Coastal Forces Depot Ship- Unmounted ~ ~ One Off Casting ~ This circular aluminium plaque is painted and depicts a golden birds claw holding a white anchor against a navy blue background. This is a one off metal casting taken from the original. No duplicates were made. ~ HMS Derby Haven ~ LOCH-Class Anti-Submarine Frigate initially ordered on 13th February 1943 from Swan Hunter at Newcastle with propulsion machinery to be provided by Wallsend Slipway Machinery. She was laid down on 11th February 1944 as LOCH ASSYNT but later in 1944 the build contract was changed and the ship was converted for use as Coastal Forces Depot Ship to be named DERBY HAVEN. This name. That of a village in the SE corner of the Isle of Man is associated with the Earls of Derby and thus with the famous annual horse race held ... moreat Epsom. This is a one off metal casting taken from the original. No duplicates were made. ~ HMS Slinger ~ RULER-Class Escort Aircraft Carrier obtained under US/UK Lend Lease Agreement. A mercantile which was under construction by Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding Corporation at Seattle and was requisitioned by the US Navy for completion as an auxiliary aircraft carrier(CVE) to be named USS CHATHAM. She was laid down on 25th May 1942 and launched on 19th September that year. Her build was completed on 11th August 1943 and then transferred to the Royal Navy as HMS SLINGER. She was the 2nd RN ship to carry the name first used in 1917 for an aircraft ... morecatapult vessel. Built under the 1943 War Programme, and named after Knaresborough Castle in Yorkshire, England. She was ordered on 19 January 1943, launched at Blyth Shipyard in Blyth, Northumberland on 29 September 1943 and completed on 5 April 1944. She was scrapped at Glasgow in March 1956. The ship's bell hangs in the Church of England Primary school in Knaresborough. ~ Bronze Ships Boat Badge HMS Phoebe 1939 Dido Class Lighter Cruiser ~ The bronze badge is the cruiser pattern pentagonal shape with a roped border. And depicts a golden moon above a waved blue& white ocean against a blue background. The paint is original. The border of the piece has five mounting holes. One at each corner. This would have originally been fitted to one of the ships launches. ~ HMS Phoebe ~ HMS Phoebe(43) was a Dido-class light cruiser launched in 1939. She had extensive WW2 service and survived being torpedoed twice. She was scrapped in 1956. ~ Dimensions ~ The badge has a height of 5 inches(12.7 cm) and a width of 5.5 inches(14 cm) It weighs 920 g. ~ Condition ~ The paint has some minor wear but remains in otherwise good condition. ~ HMS Norfolk 1930(78) County Class Heavy Cruiser Bronze Ships Boat Badge ~ This pentagonal shaped badge with rope border depicts a single feather with the scrolled motto"ICH DIEN" a contraction of the German for"I serve" Ich diene) The piece has three mount holes. Two at the top and one on the lower edge. The reverse is impressed“NORFOLK” ~ Dimensions ~ The piece has a height of 7 inches(18 cm) A width of 7.5 inches(19 cm) and a depth of 0.6 inches(1.5 cm) It weighs 1.74 kg ~ Condition ~ The badge is in decent condition ~ HMS Norfolk ~ HMS Norfolk was a County-class heavy cruiser of the Royal Navy; along with her sister ship Dorsetshire. She was part of a planned four-ship subclass. She was laid down in July 1927 at Govan by Fairfield Shipbuilding& Engineering Co. Ltd and launched on 12 December 1928. She was commissioned ... moreon 30 April 1930. She served throughout the Second World War. Her most noted actions were. 1. With her near sister- from the earlier County-class- HMS Suffolk she pursued the German battleship SMS Bismarck; the cruisers later joined the battleships Rodney and King George V as part of the force that finally sank her. 2. Norfolk was part of the cruiser covering force of Convoy JW 55B when it engaged Scharnhorst. On 26 December 1943. She scored three hits on the German ship, and received several 11-in shell hits(all passing through the thin-skinned ship without exploding) in return, before she withdrew; Scharnhorst was later caught and sunk by the battleship Duke of York and her escorting cruisers and destroyers. In 1949. Norfolk returned to Britain and was placed in Reserve. She was sold to BISCO for scrapping on 3 January 1950. On 14 February 1950, she proceeded to Newport, arriving on 19 February, to be broken up after a long and proud service of 22 years, in which she gained the Norfolk lineage the majority of its battle honours, including its last.
