Kiln dried, 2" in diameter with a minwax golden oak stain sealed with a coat of gloss urethane. The rope is 5/16" pure manila whipped with marline cord. The tip is cast iron welded to a 7/16" steel shaft. The single flue iron was developed sometime around the early 1820's. No one in particular is given credit for its design. The harpoon became popular about 1840 but was short lived due to the development of the toggle iron in 1848. It was still preferred by some and was found in ship's inventory throught the 19th century. The tip of this harpoon is an exact copy taken from a collection owned by Captain Joshua G. Baker. Antique cir. 18th/19th Nautical Harpoon Whaling Killing Lance, Massive IRON, 25"
Up for auction is a very RARE and unusual Whaling Nautical very old Antique Killing Lance. Or Killing Spear that would attach to a very thick wooden pole to deliver the death blow quickly and effectively with weighted force to penetrate bone. This is large and heavy at just about 25 inches long by 4 inches wide at the widest part of the blade while weighing over 5 pounds. It has a beautiful patina and is in great shape with many of the hand hammered impressions clearly visible in close up photos. This is a remarkable very early most likely circa late 1700's-early 1800's piece of Whaling and Maritime history that is rare to find in such outstanding. Museum quality condition.
