Brass Walker Cherub Ship Log with W. Ludolph Instrumentation. I do not know that much about this item. Looks like the original wooden box. The lid needs a litlle help. I did clean this item up just a litlle bit. The other piece I would point out is that one of the fins. The rope need to be re-attached or replaced. It has a W. Ludolph instrument with it. As I understand it this is a good quality instrument. I beleive this is used for distance and speed. I can not attest to accuracy however no way to test it. Please have a look at the pictures. The actual face is 3" in diameter and is porcelain I do believe. Has a rotating arm on the bottom. That would fit into a mounted piece on the ship and then this would swing around. Item is HEAVY. Thomas Walker& Son Ltd. Antique Solid Brass British Navy Nautical Miles Gauge Extremely Scarce Piece of Naval/ Nautical History VGC This listing is for an antique/ vintage nautical gauge. This is a nautical miles guage and it was made in England by Thomas Walker& Son Ltd. We are not sure of the exact age but we do know that production stopped in the early 1980's. This is a very heavy gauge and it is made of solid brass. All of the parts/ pieces are present and it is in very good condition. We imagine it would work just fine however we have not tested it. The thick glass face(which seems unbreakable) is free from any chips or cracks or scratches. On the back of the gauge is the serial number AB8357. The gauge measures 7" at the widest point and is 9" tall as shown. The face itself has a diameter of 6 1/2" And the ... moregauge would project 3" when mounted. OLD SOLID BRASS WALKER'S COMMODORE ELECTRIC LOG FOR TELLING SPEED OF VESSEL.
For your consideration I am listing an old devise that was used to indicate the speed of a sailing vessel. They would tow the spinning prop behind the vessel and the speed at which the prop turned was correlated to how fast the vessel was moving in the water. There is about 20 pounds of brass in this devise and that alone is worth a lot. But where are you going to find another one like this. On the white gauge it says: WALKER'S COMMODORE ELECTRIC LOG. Made in England by Thos Wlaker& Son Ltd 58 Oxford Street Birmingham. It is made from brass. It is quite heavy(over the 5 pound limit of my delicate scale) It is about 7 pounds. The Brass part. Is about 9 1/2 inches long. Not tested. And although a display piece, it appears to be working- for example when I rotate the rear hoop, the lower right needle turns slowly as expected(works both ways) These items were used by dragging a propeller behind a boat. And each turn of the propeller corresponded to distance- thereby recording the distance travelled. Cosmetic condition as shown- dial has some minor damage. And there are some numbers scratched into the exterior near the lower front end. Or log reader, a large brass spinner, an iron balance ring and a brass weight attached to the spinner. Both the meter and the spinner are marked as being a Walkers Cherub Ships Log, T.W. Mark II) 900. The meter will mark speed up to 100 knots. Though it is good working order. These are now used for display purposes. To that end someone has at one time polished all of the brass and then sealed it with a coat of lacquer to inhibit tarnishing, keeping it in that fresh polished look forever. It came from a house clearance sale so don't have much info about it. There is instructions on the paper label inside lid. It is all made out of solid heavy brass and looks fairly complete to my limited knowledge. The only think that it might have had that is not here is a thing like a steering wheel that I see some of the other logs listed has. But don't know if this had that or not. All looks to be in fairly good condition with no damage that I can find. Would benefit from a good clean/polish up. Vintage Thomas Walker & Son "EXCELSIOR" Taffrail Ship's Log SPINNER FISH Brass
Thos. Walker& Son Spinner"Fish" Description: The item up for bids is an Excelsior taffrail log spinner made by Thomas Walker& Son. Ltd. of Birmingham, England. The spinner is torpedo shaped with four fins, each is marked with a stamped anchor, T.W. and Excelsior; one fin also has the number 368. I believe it is made of brass, and the surface has a great aged patina. The auction is for the spinner only, I don't have the gauge.
