Acorn shaped and ribbed. Lots of swirly blues in the milk glass over the entire ball. Upper(narrow end of acorn) collar has one inch chip that goes down into the ball a bit as shown in the photos. The best part is this piece is marked'Kretzer' What a fabulous thing it is to find a piece marked by the maker or company. A bit of research has informed me that Kretzer weathervanes are from the early 1900's. St. Louis seems to be the home of the manufacturer. A few years ago. My brothers and I had the ominous job of cleaning out the farm house and barns our family built in the 1890's. We were thrilled to send one of our much younger limber cousin's up on the roof of the very old house to bring down the lightning rods. It looks like something from out of this world by its shape and design. This old lightning rod ball is in near mint condition. With the slight exception of an area where there is a glaze chip on the top, that looks to have been done in the manufacturing process(see pictures to determine) This lightning rod ball looks like it was well taken care of from the elements, as there are no scratches, chips or hairlines. It was totally covered in black soot when recovered, and an overnight soak in oxalic acid did the trick. This example was found in the southwestern area of Pennsylvania in farm ... morecountry. These were used on the old 1/2 inch twisted copper wire rods as both the openings are barely 3/4" wide at both ends. This ball measures 4 1/4" tall, and is 4" in diameter. It is quite heavy for its size. Interesting with the fancy stepped designs at either end, with the flat side in the center. Please see all the pictures as they tell the full story. This is a vintage weathervane. Most likely heavy aluminum; as there is no sign of brownish rust anywhere except on the tip of the vertical support rod that goes up insidethe boat and vane.From tip of arrow to end, 18 inches. Ffon peak of roof to top of boat mast, about 21 1/2. Directional arms about 13 1/2 maximum. There are three screws, all original. All three turn so that you can make needed North and roof pitch adjustments. The boat says SPRITE and the Sail has a big 6 and 341 engraved in it. This exquisitely detailed small horse weather vane has all the attributes of the larger size. Only in smaller, tabletop size. Very heavy. I suspect it is copper as a magnetic strip does not stick to the horse, just the support stick and directionals. The horse– or essence of a horse headed south“ the only direction that matters this time of year! measures approximately 14.5” tall from table by approximately 11” from nose to tip of right hoof. I think the tail may have always been“bobbed” But I can’t say for sure. Letters and front hoof tip are missing, but still a very strong classic presentation. As he stands now on his wooden stand. He is 21 1/2 inches tall and 27 inches long. The Pig himself is 14 inches tall and 27 inches from his snout to his tail. All of his seams are tight and he has not been used for target practice. There is a slight depression high on his left flank. There is a hole on the tail of the arrow, not sure if something went in there or not. It stands approx. 36in. tall(3 feet) I can't find any maker's marks, possibly Virginia Metalcrafters. But it does to the screw in the rod's base. The metal on the tips is scared from being screwed in and you can see a gold-colored metal(brass? underneath. This auction is for a wonderful copper antique horse weathervane. My mother bought this 45 years ago in Houston at an estate sale. The people had moved here from a farm that had been in their family for generations in Maine. This came from the families barn. There are 2 bullet holes in the horse. Vintage Robbins Weathervane With Farmer (Nebraska Cornhusker)?
Up for auction today is an antique/vintage Robbins Weathervane featuring a farmer with the letter"N" on his overalls. He also has a football in his left hand and an ear of corn in his pocket(Nebraska Cornhuskers? This weathervane is 26 3/4" tall and 19 1/4" across the directional. It has Robbins Maryville. MO on each side of the directional tail and it also has it on the base of the weathervane. It does have a few paint chips, to be expected with age. The ball is plastic and does look to have a blue paint drip on it. The top of the ball is a darker yellow than the bottom. There is a slight chip on the bottom of the ball. Please refer to photos.
