Vintage Copper Lightning Rod Weather Vane with Glass Ball & Directional Arrow
For auction is a complete vintage copper lightning rod/weather vane similar to the one seen on a recent version of American Pickers. This one was one of two that graced an old barn in eastern Pennsylvania. It would make a great architectural display piece for your home. Right now. It is mounted on a board for display purposes but it will not be shipped with the board. You can supply your own and save shipping costs. The three legs and framework for the rod are iron and are rusted from years of being exposed to the elements. Just the rod is copper. The three legs were meant to be spread out and attached to the peak of the roof. The bottom of the rod has a copper loop through which ran copped cable to make any lightening strike go to ground. The glass ball was intended to explode if hit by lightening to indicate a strike. The pictures are representative ... moreof its brown light coffee color. There are no cracks in the glass but there are flakes on the upper and lower edges of the circular hole as can be seen in the 6th and 7th pictures. It appears that the more serious flakes resulted from the ball turning on the directional arrow. I suppuse there is some type of washer or gasket to prevent this type of damage. The arrow is 20 3/4" long. It is made from cas aluminum or white metal as it is not very heavy. The rod stands 65 3/4" tall and the entire peice shows good green copper patina.The ball will be shipped separate from the rod and arrow to prevent damage.

Received from a display at a coastal Maine estate recently. The lightning rod. Ball and finial are Hawkeye. A really rare amber/gold mercury ball. The mercury has small spots throughout. Putty is gone from the end caps. Copper rod. Finial and bracket and wood base are solid with a great even green patina. The former owner stated that the base was part of an old turret used at the Great Diamond Island Fort off the coast of Portland. Maine. These are 4 Shinn Lightning Rods- Wrought iron stands with copper lightning rods. Ornate white milk glass balls that have W.C. Shinn, Lincoln, NE embossed on them. WEATHER VANE: Antique Eagle Rampant. Gilded Iron& Copper. Late 1900's, 30.5"Tall x 24" Wide If you set your monitor at FULL SCREEN from TOOLS you will be better able to view the photos. This is a very interesting and vigorous Weather Vane topper I bought years ago near Nashua. New Hampshire. It features an Eagle Rampant; that is, an Eagle in the attack position. It is a peculiarly American design and one which has been used in times of war. I believe this Eagle dates form the late 1800's. The previous owner thought he dated from the early 1800's; I think he is a little later. But I may be mistaken. A similar design sold recently by one of the large auction houses in New York. The body of our Eagle is made of thick sheet iron; the top spike and ball are copper. The body of the Eagle is bolted to a hollow supporting ... morerod which I believe is brass. The whole figure has been gilded. There appear to be some traces of an undercoat of a mustard color which was sometimes used on these older vanes so that when the gilding started to wear it would not be so obvious when viewed from the ground. As he is now on his wooden stand. This Eagle is 30 1/2 inches tall and 24 inches wide. The Eagle himself is 19 1/4 inches tall from his talons to the top of his wings and 24 inches long from the point of his beak to the back of his tail feathers. The gilding is worn and a few of the small points of the tail feathers are slightly bent. But other than this, the Eagle is in pretty good shape. The bolts are still strong and secure and there are no structural issues. The photos give an excellent idea of this example of a particularly American design for a Weather Vane. I believe it dates to the early years of the last century. The Sopwith Camel was a British First world War single-seat biplane fighter introduced on the Western Front in 1917. Manufactured by Sopwith Aviation Company. It had a short-coupled fuselage, heavy, powerful rotary engine and concentrated fire from twin synchronized machine guns. Though difficult to handle, to an experienced pilot it provided unmatched maneuverability. A superlative fighter, the Camel was credited with shooting down 1,294 enemy aircraft, more than any other Allied fighter of the war. ... moreIt also served as a ground-attack aircraft, especially near the end of the conflict, when it was outclassed in the air-to-air role by newer fighters. For your consideration is an antique James Weathervane cow. The cow measures approx 15" wide by 9" high. It is made of non-magnetic zink& silver soldered seams. Firmly soldered and mounted to original copper rod. The copper rod could be fitted to the original cast iron arrow if you wish. You are bidding on the cow mounted on rod only. Rare Folk Art Full Bodied Cod Fish Weathervane Great Folk Art Paint Vintage Old Description: Wonderful Vintage Full Bodied Cod Fish Weathervane A remarkable find. We found this wonderful piece of folk art several years ago in an estate out of Massachusetts. The form as you can see is a full bodied cod fish. Complete with attached fins and punched scale patterns. The woman who we purchased the item from stated that she had found in off the coast of Mass. decades ago. Judging from the paint patterns and construction of the body. We feel the piece is circa 1940's, though several other dealers we have shown it to place it slightly earlier. A close pattern itself can be seen in some earlier weathervane catalogs, but again we feel the construction places it later. Also of note. And in agreement with the former owner, the piece has probably ... moreused at a sea-side town, the salty air corroding the surface into what now is an absolutely beautiful patina. Please take a moment to click on the images and you'll see you can produce enlargements that showcase the condition and construction. There is some areas of rust through. Notably near the tail, and also at the lower fins. All the fins are still in place but the piece is in fragile condition. There is even some metal flaking in the interior, heard when the piece is moved. We love the compliment of the rusty surface with the old paint. Vintage Antique Robbins Cast Brass Car and Weathervane Primitive Folk Art
Very unique weathervane made by Robbins of Missouri. The car appears to be made of cast brass and the rest possibly cast aluminum? Use your own judgement from the pics. This is in good condition no cracks. And you get everything as shown in the pictures. Very rare to find a unit this complete. Cast Iron "Hearts and Balls" Weathervane
This wonderful weather vane is made of cast iron with a rectangular glass panel. The panel is actually a deep red in color and the etched pattern is called"Hearts and Balls" It is all original and dates to the turn of the century. It measures 23" long overall and is 5" at the widest point. It is in excellent condtion. This could actually be used as a weathervane. But would also make a beautiful decorator piece!

Vintage Eagle W/feather Directional Cast aluminum Weathervane
First let me say I don't know a single thing about this. By research and suggestions. This is a cast aluminum weather vane. We took this off the top of our garage. My father in law owned this piece and he had it for at least 30 years I'm guessing which the date on back says 1979 which would make it 33 years old. The piece is 23 in high and 17 in wide from end to end of arrow. This is in good condition. The makers marks reads(c) Eagle symbol W ite. Don't know what that means. Rare Antique American Folk Art Iron Fox Hunting Hound Weathervane Dog Form AAFA Description: Superb Antique Running Fox Hound Weathervane Having been in a private Connecticut collection for over thirty years. We are pleased to offer this wonderful example of blacksmith made American Folk Art. From its great patina, to the nice riveting. The profile as you can see is a running fox hound. Excellent attention to detail. The original maker wrought this piece with various pieces of metal, not sparing and details of the hound, including a punched out eye form, and even the tip of the dogs tongue. Great support bars and riveting to the body of the piece. Again. The enlargements help ... moreto showcase the original construction. Has multiple layers of paint present. The piece looks to have been originally a red with possibly some yellow areas(perhaps the remains of old lettering from the estate in which it was used) And later a darker brown. From exposure to the elements the paint has chipped in areas leaving a great patina, and truly wonderful old folk art character. Some slight areas of pitting from age. Weathering to the paint, but all in all a very good example of period folk art, and one that's sure to make a commanding presentation in any collection or decorum.
