Or if it was used as a weathervane? Maybe it was used as a sign. It is durable and well made, perhaps made in railroad metal shop of scrap steel. Smokestack is created in two parts with added metal giving the look of a folk art piece. I have included photos of front and back which details the reinforcing metal parts comprising the piece. ANTIQUE AMERICAN IRON 19th C FOLK ART WEATHERVANE TRADE SIGN CHIMNEY SWEEP W CAT Description: The BEST Antique American Iron Chimney Sweeper Folk Art Weathervane! Please'click' each individual image for enlargements of details including the great period construction and patina! Thanks! Dating circa 1880-1920. This wonderful piece of folk art was recently purchased by us out of an estate near Philadephia Pennsylvania. We concur with the former owners in the thought the vane was likely to have resided on a building which housed a chimney sweeping service in the Philadelphia area during the turn of the 19th century. This allowed the piece the service of acting as a trade sign as well as a weathervane. As you can see the profile of the piece is a striking sillohette of a chimney sweep. The personage bearing a period top hat, and sporting ... morea tailcoat. In the sweepers hands he holds the tools of his trade, a flue brush and a ladder. Another specific element of great folk art is the blacksmith who created this piece included the profile of a cat on the edge. Complete with pointed ears, and a charming curled tail. The construction of the piece showcases great original ironwork. The blacksmith formed out the design of the weathervane in flat iron. And reinforced the back with wrought strap iron support brackets including three areas where a rod could pass through(see images) Over the course of time. The piece was painted with several layers of paint, mostly in shades of green. If you click the individual images you'll see you can produce enlargements which allow for a better presentation of the surface and original construction. You'll see that overtime and exposure to the elements the paint has flaked on the piece creating a wonderul'alligatored' finish. The metal beneath the paint. Also exposed over decades has pitted at some areas, creating a wonderful patina. One of the other aspects that make this one of the best examples we've ever encountered is the size. I have up for sale a very nice vintage original circa 1900 American Folk Art Sheet Metal Cut Out Silhouette COW WEATHERVANE. It is Fresh off the Farm. Picked out of an old granary. I would approximate the age at early 1900s or there abouts. It measures approx 26-1/2" long, approx 17" tall and is made of two cut out and riveted together pieces of sheet metal. I do not have the rod on which it originally sat,what you see is what you get. It is in Very Nice Original As Found Condition. Comes with the old bird poop and everything. All I did was dust it off. It was painted a grayish color and is caked with dirt. Bird poop, and who knows what else. It is riveted together and has an attachment section on the back so that it could sit on a metal rod for spinning. It weighs approx 6.5 lbs. I will also be selling a HORSE WEATHERVANE. Antique Iron Weathervane Butcher Shop Scene Old Primitive Trade Sign
This amazing piece features terrific detail and a wonderful butcher shop theme. May have been used as a trade sign for a shop. This weathervane is made from thin sheet metal with thicker metal for braces which are hand riveted to the body. It is painted dark green but a lot of the paint has faded or rusted away but the sign itself is solid. It measures approximately 23" long by 17" tall. Sold As-Is. Antique Painted Metal Zinc Galloping Horse Sign weathervane- ranch? barn? Patina
An estate sale find. I don't know how old this is. I'm pretty sure it's zinc- not magnetic and the bluish silver color. It has what I believe is its original black paint that has peeled away in several spots. Giving it a very nice patina. From hoof to hoof- 36 inches long. From hoof to top of the ear. 18 inches tall. The metal is about a third of an inch thick. The face of the horse has a great expression. Weighs about five pounds. There are three holes drilled into it where either it was meant to be attached to a sign- or its other half on a weathervane or something similar was attached. CONDITION OF THE ITEM is AS SHOWN- no flaws or damage other than the wear to the paint. But there are some vague dirt or dust spots- I did not try to clean it.
