This lightning rod is very old- all of the iron parts are rusty and the copper? finial has great green patina. A strong magnet does not stick to the finial. The twisted iron is one solid piece. Not wires twisted together. It measures 52 1/2" tall, has a 3 legged base, and the legs can probably be spread to make it stand on its own. The twisted rod moves freely up and down in the base guides. The finial is marked KRETZER ST. LOUIS- see photo 4. Please see the other items I have listed. This great very old lightning rod is made of a hollow copper tube that is about 55" long. It moves freely in the iron holder so you could probably lift it up to make it taller. It stands on it own but you could spread the legs to make it more stable. Not marked by maker. Would make a great decoration in the garden! Antique Star Burst Weathervane Lightning Rod Topper Nova Flare, Brass Finial End
This great looking star burst brass lightning rod topper has it's original patina. I could find no makers mark. But these are not seen anymore and I think it dates back to the late 1800's. The star tips are sharp and I just can tell it's very old. This is being sold in antique condition, as shown in the photos. Nothing is hidden. The star burst topper is 8 3/4 inches high and 4 3/8 inches wide at the star. This is a very decorative topper and I'm sure it was more expensive than the norm when originally sold.

Received from a display at a coastal Maine estate recently. The lightning rod. Ball and finial are Hawkeye. A really rare amber/gold mercury ball. The mercury has small spots throughout. Putty is gone from the end caps. Copper rod. Finial and bracket and wood base are solid with a great even green patina. The former owner stated that the base was part of an old turret used at the Great Diamond Island Fort off the coast of Portland. Maine. It looks like a wrought iron but with the green on it I can’t tell if it was painted or possible copper turned green. It measures about 8 ¾” long by 4” wide and is in as-found condition so some of the points are bent. Most of my items are estate finds so I have no way of knowing if they came from a smoke free or pet free house. Keep this in mind if you are overly sensitive. Very nice and super rare Electra"E" brass lightning rod topper/finial. In the eleven point starburst. Crown point pattern. Measures 7 inches tall and 4 inches wide. With the original attached copper shaft it measures a total length of 10.5 inches. Condition: original aged green tint patina. also has what looks to be some of the original shiny silver nickel plating on the star. Could probably be polished nicely. Several of the tips have slight bends that are easily straightened. Otherwise no bends as seen in the pictures. Does have some pitting along"spear" part below starburst. Copper pipe does have small split where it connects to finial(note these are two pieces. Most do not have original crimped shaft) End of copper shaft is uneven. Brass Lightning rod Flaming Ball Finial. Large. It is roughly 13 x 8 x 8" and weighs 7 lbs 3.8oz. The diameter of the pipe fitting is 1.5" and it has 3 holes to run a screw threw( one of the holes has a broken screw in it i would think you could drill/tap it out) I found this at a local auction and was told that it was Lightning rod toper that came from New Orleans. Fantastic piece of circa 1880's roof cresting/ lightning arrester. Beautiful Gothic stylized botanicals in heavy cast iron. Old black paint with light surface rust. The iron is in great condition with no eroded/ rusted-through parts. The last 8" on the right in the first photo is the start of another section and is held together by screws/nuts through the original mounting plates. Mounted on an old. Weathered board for display. Cresting is tough to come by, as most was taken off the roofs many years ago do to mechanical and roof issues. The finial at the end is superb. RARE and unusual Cast Iron Lightning Rod and Finial with Base
This is an incredible piece. I search barns and auctions all the time and have never seen anything similar to this. I purchased it this week and was told it was a lightning rod although I have never seen one that looked like this. The piece is solid. Nothing broken that I can find. There is a threaded rod that runs the length of the inside of the piece that is cut off underneath the base. It appears that this base originally sat on something and that the rod continued down into another piece. It is an awesome piece, very unusual and interesting. It is solid but I was able to unscrew the top finial and take the 6-sided piece off to look it over. Please look at the pictures to judge for yourself, I cannot say 100% that this is a lightning rod but I do know it is a beautiful piece of iron. It stands approximately 43 inches tall and the widest ... morepart of the hexagon is 7 1/2 inches across. This is a heavy solid piece that stands well on its own. Zinc Antique James Lightning Rod Weathervane Glass Ball Cone & Finial Old Paint
For your consideration an antique James lightning rod and weathervane. All the parts are authentic and appear to be original to the set-up. I purchase it at an old suburban farm yard sale many years back. The steel cross arrow and James logo are flanked buy a full bodied zinc cow at the other end of the 32-1/4 inch horizontal. It has a 5-1/2 inch. Zinc, cone base-cover and a hollow zinc finial. The dark amber glass ball is 4-1/2 inches in diameter. It stands 33-1/2 inches tall. The black and gold painted surface must be at least 50-60 years old. The condition is very good. I can only see a slight dent in one side of the cow. The glass ball is in great shape as are the cone and finial. It doesn't appear to have any old repairs. It's held together with cotter pins to keep it lined-up.
