Crafted of solid Mahogany with stringer inlays during the last years of the 18th Century. The top is a single solid plank of mahogany conforming to the sharp serpentine shape of the case, affixed from the underside with entirely original hand filed steel screws- as a result of the screw joinery, coupled with years of experiencing shrinking and expanding with humidity changes, the top has experienced some light cracking along the grains(review images and condition for full overview) Beneath the slight projection of the top. A pair of drawers on either side of the case flank a pair of doors beneath a larger medial drawer. All of the drawers have the typical joinery, large colonial hand dovetails beneath applied cockbead molding, the drawer bottoms sharply chamfered to slide into rabbets along the drawer frame with cut iron nails tacking the back edge. While one drawer bottom is partially poplar, the rest remain almost purely crafted of yellow pine secondary woods, the curving drawer fronts crafted with laminated yellow pine blocks beneath a fine flamed grain mahogany veneer. The composition of the veneers is remarkable, the drawers flowing from one into the next with mostly pure transitions. Fully original oval brasses smoothly operate the drawers, all of which have fine smooth action and great strength. The case rests over long tapered legs of unusual thin profiles- note the fragility of the toes. How each leg comes as close to a point as possible while raising the substantial weight of this great case. The underside is untouched, revealing a simple and effective joinery- the serpentine medial blade is pseudo-dovetailed into either front leg(note the half-dovetail form they are cut into on either end) the flanking blades tenoned into the legs with double tongues. $550.00 Shipping Condition: Used Location: Charlotte, United States Offered for sale is a Stunning Baker Furniture Hepplewhite Inlaid Mahogany Demilune Sideboard/Server/Buffet. This bowfront sideboard features two deep ... moredrawers and four curved doors with storage cabinets. All with beautiful brass carved pulls. The top drawer has the Baker nameplate and a green silverware liner and the drawer below is a tambour-style with an arched surround. The mahogany features a gorgeous inlaid cross-banded border with inlaid stringing all supported on six tapered legs with spade feet. The sideboard measures 66" wide x 37" high x 27.5" deep. I believe this sideboard is 20-25 years old but I am not sure of the exact age. It may be older. Overall it is in excellent condition with the following exceptions: there are a few light scuffs/scratches on the top(see pic#11) and the back left leg has a hairline crack that extends from the foot upwards approximately 3-4 inches(see pic#12) This crack does not appear to affect the sturdiness of the piece. I have discounted the price to reflect this issue. Overall, as is the case with all Baker mahogany furniture, this sideboard is a stunning piece of furniture that is a beauty to behold. Because of their quality construction they are rarely sold, but instead handed down from generation to generation. We feel this sideboard was made around 1960. The wonderful mahogany has a splendid grain and beautiful color. Satinwood inlays and mahogany cross bands provide subtle. But necessary contrast around the doors, drawers, and top. Further enhancing the beauty of this sideboard are fluted details between the drawers and doors and down the legs. The legs themselves are tapered and end in spade feet. The cabinet doors stay closed with a spring latch and the drawers slide smoothly on wooden runners. The brass ring pulls are in great shape and are the right proportion for this size buffet. The only blemish on this bow front sideboard is a small separation in the top on the right hand side. We have pictured this in the photos. It was well cared for and comes from a smoke and pet free home. The piece measures 67.25" in length across the front x 32 7/8" in depth at the center front x 37.75" in height. It has a small cubby on the left that has a door with two handles that match the right side. The right side has a top lined silver flatware storage drawer and a second door below with an additional cubby for storage. The front center has two large dove-tail drawers as well. I am not sure if this is Edwardian or much later from the 1950's or 1960's, I suspect the latter. It has a serpentine front and top shape& is supported on six slender legs. Four at the front, two at the back. The top is cross-banded and has tramline edging. It has inlaid detailing around the top and the cupboard and drawer fronts. Maryland, 20th Century Item# 412QXR08S This is an exquisite reproduction sideboard by the Potthast Brothers furniture firm. Established in the mid 19th century and renowned for their exceptional quality and benchmade construction. This is a very fine example, quite angular with clean undistracted lines. A single drawer in the center retains it's original stamped brass bail pulls, opening to reveal a felt upholstered interior(remaining in excellent condition) and the Potthast branding. The drawer is hand dovetailed along the front and back corners, the bottom of the drawer machine chamfered along the edges and set in grooves with small supporting blocks. Beneath the drawer are a pair of cupboard doors, opening to reveal a shelved interior. Corner inlay on the doors, a center oval, and inlay up and down the front legs. There is raised moulding that encases the oval inlay pattern(1 strip of moulding is missing)pictured) Each side has 1 cabinet and 1 drawer with 1 large partitioned and felt lined drawer in the center. The drawer and cabinet fronts covered in a crotch mahogany. Each side with 3 tapered legs. Some chips to the veneer throughout. Knechtels Mahogany Buffet, Sideboard (Hepplewhite Style), mid century
This piece has moved many times and the top and legs do need to be refinished as a few nicks. But a lovely design. Our parents kept their sterling silver.Crystal serving dishes and linens in it. Knechtels is out of Hanover, Ontario. Knechtels Ltd was formed in the mid 1930's but I have no idea how Blowey Henry is connected to it. The latter was established in Alberta in 1906. Pretty certain this belonged to my grandparents who passed when I was very young but I do remember it- always in our dining rooms. 20 inches deep)
