Amazing Brass Bookbinding Clasp Tudor Rose English Bookbinder's 16th C. Style NR
For auction is this really. Really cool bookbinding clasp, top plate. Please note: the book is not included in this auction, it is just pictured to illustrate how the clasp might look in place. The clasp is hand wrought and the back has evidence of hammer marks. The top has a deeply and intricately engraved TUDOR ROSE. I assume this is English and it reminds me of the 16th Century but I imagine it may be much later. It is corroded and has a lovely patina. This little relic would look amazing if used on a period binding and would add value and beauty to your own bookbinding creations. The lot includes four 6-inch bowls, three seven-inch plates, and four 10 inch plates, with a combined weight of 9 pounds, 4 ounces. This is quality ware. Solid enough for everyday use. There is some surface scratching and pin-prick glaze dings and occasional flea bites from everyday wear and age. But no chips or cracks. See photos. One of the bowls has crazing. English Sterling Silver Tudor Cup (Holms Cup) Antique Replica Birmingham 1922
Presented. Without reserve, is a high quality antique miniature silver replica of"The Tudor Cup" This English Sterling Silver Cup was made by Blanckensee& Son. Birmingham in 1922. The hall marks are on the underside of the cup and are clear and easily legible to the naked eye. It is also marked- Made in England- within the hollow of the foot. The cup stands approximately 2.25" tall and 2.63" in diameter. 5.7 cm& 6.7 cm. Respectively) It is made of heavy gauge metal and weights 1.98 troy ounces. It appears to have originally been treated with a gold wash and much of this remains. The footed cup has a font shaped bowl. Chased with scale panels, below a Latin inscription in Lombardic letters, on a reeded and beaded pedestal foot. The Latin inscription reads DEVS IM DONA DVXS AME DENE SXCTVS and roughly translates ... moreto"on the beatific vision of God" which was used as a grace(Oman, English Engraved Silver, pg 31) The original cup became famous when it was sold(as part of the Dunn-Gardner collection) at Christie's Auction in 1901 for GBP 4100. The highest price ever paid for a piece of silver at that time. John Dunn-Gardner, of Soham Manor, had a legendary collection of silver, the sale covered 6 catalogue volumes. The original cup of 1521, with scallop shell makers mark, is also known as the Holms cup, named after a previous owner. The original cup is now part of the collection of the Royal Scottish Museum, who purchased it in 1958 for GBP 9500. Excellent condition. No defects noted. Surface shows less than normal wear. No mono. Repairs, or removals. The cup is typical of the pre-renaissance standing cups of the late Gothic period(Judith Banister. Victorian and Edwardian Reproductions, Antique Collector, November 1976) where a Tudor Cup replica is pictured. There are two of these available. They are egg cups made of copper wire. Believe to be handmade as they are slightly different in size and diameter and all proportions. They appear to have been made with one continuous wire while weaving and wrapping to form cup. All facets are intact. Tarnish and a couple of sections of wire are bent slightly, this being only damage. Bases are approx. 2 1/8" wide. Bowls being 2" wide approx. and they are 3" tall. English Oak Carved Chest - Believed to be Genuine Tudor Period - 16th Century
Normal 0 In spite of the damage and some of the alterations and repairs done to this chest. It is a good looking piece ready for display. this is the real deal with the main carcass or case and carvings being hundreds of years old. I have just finished looking at pictures of the Tudor Warship the Mary Rose and noted that the dovetail joints on the chest shown in the pictures are very similar in style and size and spread to the joints on this chest I have for sale; these are not made like modern joints) The chest is about 5' long. 24" from front-to-back when measured at the top of the lid and it is 26" high. I obtained this chest from a man whose father obtained it from a wealthy estate some years ago. the man told me that this chest was"16th Century" Some of what I see confirms that it could be: it was made as an oak ... moreplank chest. Probably with the quarter or rift sawn trim and carved panels depicting upper class individuals- the man wearing a wide fluted collar) there are dovetail joints most noticeable on the back. the boards on the bottom and front and back are wide- in excess of 18" and one of them is 22" wide- I am a professional woodworker and I restore 19th century doors for a living and have never seen wood this wide. The wood on the bottom is split and has a good bit of worm damage( I can make a new wood bottom and set it over the existing if someone wanted to use this for storage; I am open to discussion, I can even cut a piece of ply wood to fit on pickup if the purchaser wishes) all of the wood except the bottom appears to be oak. the bottom appears to be pine. There is quarter sawn oak trim applied to the front and sides of the chest. the trim is applied with dowels- which I have never seen before(though a collector who recently look at this told me that was a common way to apply trim in days before nails) the dowels must have been applied early as the boards have shrank around them leaving a bit of protrusion on the inside. Vintage, Arts & Crafts - English Tudor, Chunk Glass Porch Light - Lamp - Sconce
Restored. Vintage, chunk glass, 6 sided porch lamp/sconce, newly painted in Charleston Green. Light has been rewired to current electrical code, with ground wire. Surface has a hammered look to it. 14" tall and projects 10" Probably from the 30's. Very solidly built and has great presence. If you're artistic, or at least adventurous, you could paint the back of the glass various colors and make a stunning faux stained glass lamp. Please email with any questions. We are pleased to offer this beautiful. Unusual, ORIGINAL AND UNRE-TOUCHED, antique chair. Dating to the very early 1900s, this unique chair features French/English Tudor styling. The chair is wood with a high slatted back. The chair features a large medallion in the top center of the back. A gesso style, painted lion with fleur de lis crest is inside the medallion section. The lion crest is black and the background paint is a burnt red. The balance of the chair is painted a dark olive green with brown undertones. Golden brown is used on the spherical sections of the turned wood spindles and legs. There are hand painted flowers on the back slats of the back and on the front stretcher between the two front legs. The chair still retains the old, original, rush seat which is a thick paper fiber. This is a striking chair with lots of character. ... moreIt is in very good condition with the expected and minor wear. There is minor paint chipping which can be resolved. The back medallion sections are a little visible. The chair is pretty sturdy with no major looseness. The maker and year made is unknown but this vintage Tea Cozy is a Piece of Folk Art. Most likely Made in the England or someplace in the United Kingdom! This very Unique Tea Cosy measures 13 1/4" wide x 9 1/2" tall. This Beautiful piece of Art Tea Cosy is a very detailed Tudor-Style Half-Timber Cottage and has 4 windows with curtains on one side. Stone-like walkway with grass& a cluster of flowers on either side leading to a door with nob and Thatched-like Roof with Chimney. On the reverse side there are only 3 windows and flowers are beside the stone-like walkway, all other details are the same. I do know the pattern is getting to be difficult to find. Set of EIGHT Berry. Or Fruit Bowls, with"Tudor Rose" transfer in a Chintz like pattern of roses in shades of pink with green and blue highlights. Diameter Top: 5 3/8" Depth: 1.25" Total weight. Set: 2 lbs, 4 oz. They are in EXCELLENT condition with no chips. Cracks, hairlines, or crazing. They look to be used very little. Marked with(two) old transfer Meakin marks(see photos) M EAKIN(J. G. We are pleased to offer this beautiful antique cabinet. This is a gorgeous cabinet/sideboard or accent entry table that dates to the 1920s. The cabinet is solid wood(Maple or Pine) with beautiful grain pattern. The cabinet has both Art Deco and Jacobean details. The cabinet has a double door front. The doors have arched and recessed panels. Inside the recessed areas. Each door has a raised, English Tudor style shield. The shields feature a yellow stain which provides contrast to the medium stain of the surrounding wood. There is a decorative, scalloped apron with incised accents as well. The cabinet has beautiful, turned wood front legs and sleek, straight back legs. There are stretcher supports between the front and back legs as well as a center support. The cabinet has generous storage inside. There are no shelves, just open storage space. ... moreThe bottom storage area is a thinner piece of wood than the balance of the cabinet. The cabinet is in very good condition. The finish is very good. There are a few light surface scuffs and scratches, but nothing severe or distracting. The cabinet is very sturdy with no wobbling. There are two very small drilled holes; one in the very back and one on the bottom of the inner cabinet. I think someone may have used this as a media cabinet at some point and the holes were drilled for power cords. The cabinet has a back molding piece that someone has reattached with relatively new brackets(see photo 12) The cabinet is also marked, in ink, goes to Jodi Brand" which is probably a family member of a previous owner. This is a beautiful and functional piece of antique furniture. It is quite striking as well. The cabinet measures 34" wide. It is 17.75" deep(front to back) It is 36" tall to the top of the back molding. The table surface height is 33" The interior cabinet space is 12" tall. 14" front to back and 31" wide. Medieval England / Tudor Era Lead Spindle Whorls -- English Metal Detector Find,
This lot of lead spindle whorls was purchased from a collector in England who told me they were dug up in Yorkshire. Specifically. I've done nothing to clean them, so what you see is what you get. A spindle whorl(according to Wikipedia) is"a disc or spherical object fitted onto the spindle to increase and maintain the speed of the spin. For ages the whorls have been made of many different materials: amber. Antler, bone, coral, glass, metal(iron, lead, lead alloy) and wood(oak) Some types of local materials have been also used, such as chalk, limestone, mudstone, sandstone, slate, and soapstone. These are not uncommon items. And many treasure hunters in the UK have uncovered these in farm fields. Sold as is, your purchase includes all four. I don't have a COA to pass along.
