Rare antique cast bronze figural relief. Made by the Dogon in Mali. Piece has a wonderful, very old encrusted patina on it and could date the piece to ... moreat least the 19th century and maybe even much older. 5” H x 4 1/4” W. A very unique image: It appears to be a head looking out of a decorative wall, with hands hanging from a bar, and a small, round base with holes at the sides to attach to something, not in the right place to hang to wear) It probably was some type of shrine piece(see below) Bronze casting has a long history in Africa. Going back to the 14th or 15th century, and culminating in the beautiful bronze wall plaques in Benin that record the images of the warriors that fought in the service of the Oba, King of Benin. I was told by an African friend that many of the wonderful Dogon bronze pieces in the collection I was recently able to buy, had various meanings for the individuals who owned them. They would have been taken into the“society house” similar to a meeting place, church, shrine) and used for various rituals including those ceremonies conducted by a“healer” or for funerary events. gsrx_vers_566(GS 6.7.1(566)

BASONGYE, BASSONGO, BAYEMBE, SONGE, SONGHAY, WASONGA) There are numerous mask styles associated with the Songye. Power objects and objects associated with divination are also prevalent in Western collections. In the past many Songye objects have been misattributed to the Luba and vice versa. Songye origins are shared with the Luba through a common mythical Songye ancestor known as Kongolo. Who can be traced through lineages to the 16th century. The linguistic traditions of these neighboring peoples are intertwined as well. It is believed that the founders of the Songye emerged from the lake region in Shaba province to the south in the heart of the Luba homeland. The Lomani River divides Songye territory and marks the boundary of the areas invaded by the Luba. As a result of these geographic and political differences there emerged of two distinct social structures among the eastern and western Songye and two stylistic differences in art forms between the two areas. The Songye traditionally relied mostly on farming and hunting for subsistence. Because the rivers were associated with the spirits of deceased chiefs who were often buried in them. Fishing was not practiced except in times of great need. The artistic wares of the Songye, including pottery made by women and weaving and metalworking done by men, were traded extensively with their neighbors. They were recognized as superior craftsmen, and their products were in great demand. The Songye are divided into about 35 subgroups. The paramount chief(Yakitenge) and his advisers are the central power in Songye territory. Many of the subgroups were actually quite large. Were often spread over m

Gold Weights: The Gold weights or Mbramoo of the Akan are stylized miniature sculptures traditionally used to weigh bags of gold dust for use as currency. ... moreMade of bronze or brass the weights are made using the traditional lost wax casting technique(I highly recommend viewing this for a precursory view of the technique) The weights themselves often became status symbols with higher nobility indicted with not only owning more weights but the degree of casting in the weights and the accompanying accouterments like spoons and decorative chests. Each weight was made to be equivalent to a Uquiya or Islamic ounce(roughly 27.3 grams) With the weights either being filed down or adorned with beads to achieve the perfect weight. Though long since out of use for actual gold measurements, the weights have continued to be made and serve now more as collectible handmade sculptures. This particular piece is a Rooster or Chicken measuring about 1.75 in long by 2 in tall, with a lovely filigree and patina making it wonderful for any collector! Motifs: Akan gold weights were often used not only for simple measurements but to strike up conversation during business transactions by each conveying a unique story or idea through their designs and representations. These design motifs usually fall into three trends; courtly figures. Adinkra symbols or representational animals. The figures representing Ashanti nobility tend to be allegories. Myths and fables of the Ashanti's origins. The Adinkra symbols are much flatter, rectangular designs based upon the Ashanti Adrinkra system of writing where philosophical concepts and aphorisms are represented with stylized patterns and designs(the Adrinkra is not a phonetic system of writing and holds no capability for writing nouns, verbs, etc but instead conveys transcendent thoughts on the nature of existence) The animal representations often are attempts to convey proverbs relating to the individual animals. Please view my other listings for more gold weights and great deals and please emai
