Scratches, Additional Information: A figural wooden guitar 9zither with handle carved in the form of a half figure. The instrument has five wires strung through the holes at each end to form strings. The figure on the top is sad to represent Mwana Hiti. An iconic figure of a number of peoples in Tanzania. Mwana Hiti figures are used as surrogate child/husband figures by girls during their ritual seclusion before initiation. Considered to be both male and female, they are given names of real or mythical ancestors, and are kept in special ... moreplaces in the hut, either on a special stool or in a little house. The name has many meanings, including"daughter of the throne, and"child of the initiation stool"so it is common to have this image on a throne. This instrument was played as a guitar to accompany songs and dances. Tanzanian tribal art is less researched and published than Western and Central art. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. This ... moreis a fascinating piece with two large hairstyle made similar to the ones found on the famous Zaramo Mwana Hiti. This figure is from the Zaramo people who live in Tanzania.The facial features are comparable to these commonly found on Kwere. Ngulu, or Nyamwezi sculptures. The traditional use and function of such figures have been lost. It is probably that this one represents an important ancestors figure for she is on a stool, which is supposed to be a chief's throne and an emblem of authority. This figure may be identified as a pregnant woman because of its prominent abdomen and can be interpreted as a fertility figure. Thus such a carving was most likely used in connection with the cult of ancestors or a fertility ritual closely related to the ancestor cult. This is an interesting and rare example of traditional Zaramo sculptures that would be of good addition to any collection. Tanzanian tribal art is less researched and published than Western and Central art. There are still superb pieces coming out of rural areas. Antique African Tanzanian Zaramo Fertility Doll”Mwana Hiti” ~ Early 20th Century Fine Abstract Female Form& Aged Patina ~ please scroll down for more photos and information ~ SIZE: Height- 6.75” 17 cm) DESCRIPTION: Antique early 20th century African carved wood female fertility doll or sculpture from the Zaramo People of Tanzania. This type of figure is known as“Mwana Hiti” or“wooden child” and first appears during a young Zaramo woman's initiation seclusion. The novice treats the doll as she would her own child. And as part of the coming-out celebration, she and the doll dance together. If the woman does not bear children, she again adopts the doll as her child. So important is the Mwana Hiti that the doll shape appears on ritual objects, staff finials, and grave posts in Zaramo culture. This example is finely carved and more abstracted ... moreand cubist than most. The form is beautifully proportioned and the surfaces were smoothed and shaped by an expert carver. It has an dark and rich. Old honey-colored patina with great depth and warmth. The surfaces have a soft luster and glossy sheen from years of handling. This piece was bought about 20 years ago from an old collection of African tribal art in San Francisco. AGE: Early 20th century. Circa 1900- 1940. CONDITION: Good condition. As shown in the photos and with the following noted: Old patina, as described above. MWANA HITI Zaramo FERTILITY DOLLS Tanzania with Museum Tags PAIR
For your consideration are a pair of what I believe to be Mwana Hiti Zarano Fertility dolls from Tanzania. I am unsure of their age or significance. They appear to have museum tags and come from the collection of an elderly gentleman who collected African Art and Art in General. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. Anyone in the Nashville area is free to come out and examine these if they would like to. The female doll appears to have one bead eye and one that is carved to resemble a bead. I do not think anything is missing from these dolls and I think the eyes were that way by design. But I will let the experts out there decide.
