These rare naturalistic-style masks, formerly produced by the Kongo peoples of the Congo River, are known to be diviner masks. Hand carved from a single piece of wood. With color pigments. Height: 64 cm. Living mainly in the forested areas of south-west Nigeria. On both sides of the Niger River the Igbo number some ten million individuals. Mainly farmers and merchants, they also hunt and fish. They are subdivided into thirty-three subgroups and are spread out among about two hundred villages scattered through the thick forest or semifertile marshland. Only on the northern and western edges of the area, under influence from Igala and Benin, are hereditary rulers found. The heads of families form the council of elders, which shares its power with numerous secret societies. These societies exercise great political and social influence. They are highly hierarchical, their members passing from one level to the next. There is strong social pressure toward individual distinction, and men can move upward through successive grades by demonstrating their achievements and their generosity. The lack of overall centralization among the Igbo-speaking peoples has been conducive to the development of a great variety of art styles and cultural practices. The earliest sculpture known from Igboland is from the village of Ibo Ukwu. Where the grave of a man of distinction and a ritual store, dating from the 9th century AD, contained both chased copper objects and elaborate castings of leaded bronze. Ibo sculpture is subject to rather strict rules: the figures are generally frontal, symmetrical, and upright, with legs slightly spread, arms held away from the body, and hands stretched forward, palms open. African Tribal Collection. Bakongo Nkisi Nail Fetish Figure. Description Authentic African antiquities& artefacts for discerning collectors(Most pieces ... moresourced by us direct from remote villages) THE AFRICAN TRIBAL COLLECTION Item Number: MA1135 Originates from: Congo Tribe: Bakongo Materials: Wood. Nails, Metal Blade Plates. Condition: Weathered; fair condition for its age. Approximate age: 100 Years Old Measurements cm: 97 Tall 42 Wide Fetishes were protective figures used by individuals. Families, or whole communities to destroy or weaken evil spirits, prevent or cure illnesses, repel bad deeds, solemnize contracts or oath-taking, and decide arguments. A diviner or holy person would activate the statue, using magical substances. Fetishes gained power and were effective because people believed in them. The nkondi are the most powerful of the nkisi. They were used to identify and hunt down unknown wrongdoers such as thieves. And people who were believed to cause sickness or death by occult means. They were also used to punish people who swore false oaths and villages which broke treaties. To inspire the nkondi to action, it was both invoked and provoked. Invocations, in bloodthirsty language, encouraged it to punish the guilty party. It would also be provoked by having gunpowder exploded in front of it, and having nails hammered into it. They were also used to literally"hammer out agreements"with clear implications as to what would happen to people who broke the agreements. Much of the profits raised from this sale will go a little way to help some impoverished children and villagers in the Moyen Cavally Region of Cote D'Ivoire and Liberia. This is a very nice Bakongo Fetish which I picked up in the D.R.C. in 2009 whilst in the Katanga Province. He is an imposing little character who stands ... moreat approximately 14 inches in height. His mouth is pulled open in a fearsome fashion. His body is bound by a rope and he carries a very large terrestrial snail shell on his back. Museum Quality Bakongo Nkisi Fetish, Congo / Santeria / Palo Mayombe, Eggun
Nkisi(medicine) mirror fetishes are a unique and important phenomenon of Kongo sculpture. Historically. There were two types of nkisi. Public and private, with some having vital democratizing roles, as sources of empowerment for rural residents and individuals outside the court. At most basic, the nkisi represents a container of empowering materials or“medicines” called bilongo. The magical substances may be blood along with animal. Vegetable, and mineral matter. They are believed to invest the fetish figure with power and make it possible for the devotee to establish contact with the spirit. The“medicines” are generally secured in cavities in the stomach. Head, or back to activate the work with the empowering agent. The nkisi. Properly endowed with magic substances and additions by the nganga or doctor. Had the power to act in a number of ... moreways. There are four main types of nkisi. Used for different purposes. Nkondi are fetishes of ill omen. Usually brandishing a spear or a knife, while npezo are just as evil. But less menacing in attitude. Na moganga are benevolent figures. Which protect against sickness and dangerous spirits. They help the hunter and the warrior; while mbula protect against witchcraft. All nkisi can be used for a variety of purposes and their meaning is ambivalent. This Nkisi has an outstanding patina. Carved late 1970's, early 1980's. Measurements: 20" X 6" Materials: wood. Glass at eye sockets, glass covering stomach cavity where bilongo is stored. INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING PRICES HAVE INCREASED BY THE POST OFFICE. IF ACTUAL SHIPPING PRICE IS UNDER WHAT THE BUYER PAID I WILL REIMBURSE THE BUYER THE DIFFERENCE. IF OVER I WILL TAKE THE LOSS.

Kongo(Congo-Kikongo-Kisikongo-Koongo-Kikoongo-Bakongo-Bashikongo) Bakongo Nail Fetish Figure. Materials: wood.Cloth, irons nails, glass, nice patina. Age: half 20th century Dimensions: Height 90 cm. Origin: D.R.Congo Thanks for your visit Check out my other items or only Auction Add to Favourite Shops B Background The kingdom of Kongo was at the height of its power in 1482. When Portuguese sailors first visited the coast of Central Africa. Founded between 1350 and 1400, the kingdom was a model of centralized government, with a divine king and a network of advisers, provincial governors, and village chiefs who ruled as many as three million people. Portuguese navigators brought with them Catholic missionaries, who converted the kings of Kongo during the sixteenth century. It has been suggested that the practice of piercing the nkisi with nails, ... morespikes, or other elements was adopted from Christian images of martyred saints introduced in the area during this time. Figurative wood sculptures such as these are sometimes called"fetishes, a misleading word derived from the term feitico, which was used by the early Portuguese explorers to describe anything artificial or manmade. This striking sculpture is an nkisi(pl. minkisi) from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Minkisi are the creation of a sculptor and an nganga(pl. banganga) A ritual specialist in Kongo society. An nkisi is essentially a container of spiritual forces that are directed to investigate the underlying cause of some chronic problem. As spiritual experts, banganga are approached by clients to address any of a multitude of crises that may emerge in the community, including illness, political instability, and social strife. Minkisi are essential to the nganga's profession, creating a focal point from which to draw upon the spirit realm and its powers. Just as minkisi are directed toward specific ends, the banganga that own and control them may be specialized to address specific issues. For instance, only experienced banganga assume the responsibil

BAKONGO AFRICAN ART FIGURE #2008 ~ For African Art Gallery
BAKONGO FIGURE#2008 Tribe: BaKongo. Country: DRC. Material: Wood. Size: 12" 29.2 cm) Tall. Condition: Good. Item# 2008 Provenance: Ex. James E Adkins Estate Collection(Florida. USA) The Kongo may number about three million people. Present in three countries– the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Angola and the Congo Republic– the Kongo occupy the region at the mouth of the Congo River. Numerous subgroups go to form the vast Kongo cultural complex, among which are the Vili, the Woyo and the Yombe. These tribes produce a diversity of artistic styles, with Kongo art being one of the best known. The Kongo demonstrate the extreme complexity of their traditions on major occasions. Such as the investiture of a chief or at funerals. The Kongo pantheon was small: one all-powerful god who gave healing powers to the king, to the nganga, and to ... morethe heads of cults. Besides their textiles of great renown, the Kongo had a funerary art of decorated steles and funerary statues in stone, very often depicting the chief seated cross-legged in a posture of reflection. Some of these statues were placed on tombs to aid the spirits of the dead to join the world of the deceased. Wood sculptures represent royal wives, hunters, musicians, and healers. Their postures vary: sometimes they kneel in a position of respect, the head bent slightly backwards; women might be depicted seated with the child they hold by the neck or whom they are nursing. The cheeks are round, the face, carefully rendered, is realistic. The patina is smooth, the bust scarified. Elaborate geometrical patterns occur on the pedestal or the body, where they may be mingled with fine scarification marks. The figures were used to ward off danger to mothers during delivery and to protect the health of the child. The commemorative statues known as phemba were designed for women who had lost a child and wanted another. Congolese stone statue - (Ntadi of BaKongo)
On sale are a couple hand carved stone statuettes in the form of pipes. They are carved out of solid stone and they actually have a hole all the way through that makes them functional pipes. The style falls under a category called"the thinker" One pipe features a female"thinker" with an infant in her arms. The other features a male"thinker" and has an additional face carved at the bottom of the statue. I have no idea about the actual age of these figures. But the texture of the two stones seem different and therefore I suspect they were carved at different times. The male pipe shows some sign of usage and age(and could actually be hundreds of year old) While the female one might not be that old and does not appear to have been used as an actual pipe. I acquired this couple in Kinshasa. Congo in 2009 from Marché ... morede Valeur(locally known as marché de voleurs- market of thieves) For those who know Kinshasa and this infamous"art" market, these items were purchased when the market was still at the roundabout at the end of Boulevard du 30 Juin and not its current location. please note that the male statue has a chipped part at the tip of it(see red circle in one of the photos) Each of the statues is about 7 inches long.

These societies ... moreexercise great political and social influence. Rare African Bakongo NAIL FETISH Statue with lots of character & Spear! non mask
You are bidding on a very nice and rare African Bakongo NAIL FETISH Statue. Personally my favorite, who is looking for a good home. I will ship it with the spear that I added, the metal part is not attached to the rod but slips together fine and will make for easier shipment. I haven't ran across many of these and this one is cool with lots of character. We have been collecting masks and items for many years, and have purchased most of them from two different people. One has a well known gallery and sells on ebay, the other one is a couple who went to Africa every year and brought thousands of dollars in African Art home with them and gave us first option at them in most cases. You will see with the different masks we list that they really stand out and not ordinary masks. Beautiful pieces that will look nice in your home. We did not ... moreplan on having to downsize and sell most our art, so we DON'T have much INFO if any on these. I will list them as where I BELIEVE they came from but IT IS ONLY MY OPINION. Again, they are very nice pieces. This one we believe came from ZAIRE by the Bakongo, D R Congo. Please bid on them for the beauty in the art and how well it is carved! It Measures approximately 16" high x 8" wide x 8" deep, the spear is 27" Good Luck and Happy Biddings! PAYPAL and USA ONLY!

Lot 809, Old Bakongo Nkisi Nail Fetish, Congo / Santeria / Palo / Eggun
Nail and mirror fetishes are a unique and important phenomenon of Kongo sculpture. In the Kongo. All these fetishes are called nkisi. Nkisi means“medicine” Historically. The nkisi. Properly endowed with magic substances and additions ... moreby the nganga or doctor. Had the power to act in a number of ways. Signs of sacrificial libation. Signs of blue indigo. Protective powder. Measurements: 25" X 7" Materials: wood. Nails, razor blade, glass covering eyes, medicine pouch on back, aluminum sheeting on head.

Yombe (Nkisi) Nail Fetish Power Figure. Yoruba Songye Yaka Baule Dan Bakongo
Superb Mayombe Nkisi"Nail Fetish" Striking authentic fetish featuring enlarged head with encrusted sacrificial material. As characteristic of the Mayombe fetishes this has an array of nails and blades throughout the body as well as a horn. Wicker cord and varied sacrificial material. The cavity that one day packed the magical ingredients(bilongo) is open after decades of erosion and handling but the glass eyes still intact. As to the age of this figure-in my educated estimate- its should have at least 75 years in civilization plus 20 or 30 more when it was active and commissioned in its village. Certainly the price doesn't reflect the real value of this piece. It measures approximately 27 inches tall. I acquired this Power figure in 1989 at a sort of antique shop at Brussels. Belgium. It was exhibited in a couple of African ... moreart exhibitions in community colleges in Southern California. Buyer has 7 days to inspect the piece and may return it if not satisfied. Buyer pays shipping back. It you do have any questions or need more pictures send me a message. Outstanding piece rarely seen on ebay! Absolutely astonishing in person. Nail fetishes were revered throughout the Kongo kingdom. The nkisi are manipulated by their owner or by a specialist. In order to‘activate’ these forces and provoke the nkisi, the nganga insults it, sings or creates an explosion in front of it, or may hammer a blade or a nail into its body. The fetish also served to seal agreements, to restore health to the spirit or body, or to destroy an enemy or sorcerer through ... moremagic. The present figure is a dog, called kozo fetish. Congo Bakongo Fetish Tribal Statue with Cotton Wrap, Grass Charms & Iron 16x6x6
BEAUTIFUL SCULPTURE- Used within the tribal community as forces of protection. And for coping with various problems. The local diviners add special objects to the figures, such as nails, mirrors, beads, feathers, horns. Imbued with magical properties, these adornments enhance the available power of the statues. Those bearing protruding nails and/or blades are regarded as the most powerful of these figures. And as each successive object is driven into its body, the figure gains additional strength. Inset in the abdomen and shoulder is a piece of mirror-like glass, intended to obscure a filled cavity while repelling evil spirits.
Lot 7, Bakongo Fetish on Custom Made Wooden Base, Congo
Bakongo fetishes are a unique and important phenomenon of Congo sculpture. In the Congo. All these fetishes are called nkisi. Nkisi means“medicine” Historically. The nkisi. Properly endowed with magic substances and additions by ... morethe nganga or doctor. Had the power to act in a number of ways. This fetish is carved from heavy solid wood and is professionally mounted on a heavy wooden base with brass insert. Can easily be removed.
