This is a very interesting ceremonial African cup. The inside of the cup portion is fairly roughly carved, and it does have a hairline cracks and it’s ... moreprobably from the wood drying out. Does it come from a museum clearance auction though, so I do know that it is old.

You are bidding on a Rare and OLD(approx. 100 years old or more) Tribal KUBA PEOPLE Carved Wood Cup/ Goblet with amazing design details. From Congo Normal ... more0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Aside from the beautiful cloth mentioned above. The Kuba also produce carved wooden masks and figures. They also carve headrests, divination oracles, and anthropomorphic cups. In the 16th century. The Kuba peoples migrated from the distant north to their current location along the Sankuru River. When they arrived, however, they found that the Twa already lived there. The Twa were eventually absorbed into the Kuba Kingdom, but retained some independent cultural characteristics. The height of the Kingdom was during the mid-19th century. Europeans first reached the area in 1884, but the Kuba, being relatively isolated, were not as affected by the slave trade as many of the other peoples in the area. The Nsapo invaded during the late 19th century, and the Kingdom was broken up to a large extent. The Kuba oral history tells of the creation of the world by Bumba. Who decreed that the Bushoong would always be the ruling class. This creator god is not formally worshiped. At one time the Kuba had a religion based on ancestor worship, but this seems to have died out, although divination is still practiced in order to discover causes of evil. Success during hunting is recognized as a gift from the gods. It is not incidental that diviners often employ carved wooden hunting dogs as rubbing oracles in order to arrive at their knowledge. Dogs are seen throughout the region as responsible for delivering the will of the god, whether it be through hunting or through the diviner. From Congo Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Aside from the beautiful cloth mentioned above. The Nsapo invaded during the late 19th century, and the Kingdom was broken up to a large extent. The Kuba oral history tells of the creation of the world by Bumba. KUBA Palm wine cups One of the important art forms identified with competition between titled court members among the Kuba are the carved palm-wine drinking cups. With half of all Bushoong men holding titles in the 1880s. Competition for influence was sometimes fierce, and found expression in the elaboration of these essentially commonplace household objects into ... moreworks of extraordinary beauty. Because Kuba individuals of high status signaled their largesse by distributing great quantities of palm wine to their friends and affiliates to attract a following. The complexity of such art came under public scrutiny. If, as the myths maintain, the inebriation caused by drinking palm wine led eventually to the formation of the royal line, drinking thus provided the social setting in which office holders were able to play out through art the precariousness of their own positions within this heatedly contested milieu. There are reports– not confirmed– that these cups might have been used in the poison ordeal. Among the Kuba. As among other African tribes, death was never attributed to natural causes, but to malevolent spirits or to witchcraft. The person suspected of using witchcraft was required to drink poison from such a cup. If he vomited up the drink, he was declared innocent. On the other hand, his death proclaimed his guilt and constituted his punishment. source of information: Rand African Art We will post worldwide. Please contact for a price. Among the most public forms of display by Kuba men was the use of decorated wooden cups for drinking palm wine. Palm wine(maan) is the principal beverage of choice in much of central Africa. It is still tapped twice a day(early in the morning and again in the late afternoon) from raffia palm trees that are specially cultivated for that purpose. The sweet but tart liquid is brought back to the community in large gourd containers and sold by the cup full. ... moreDecorated drinking cups were made in a range of styles. The outer surface of most drinking cups was covered with a single geometric pattern encircling the outer surface of the container. Some examples exhibit a curved decorated handle in the form of a stylized human being or a human head with an abbreviated body or arm ending in a large hand- a convention also seen on other Kuba sculpture including decorated drums. Some Kuba figurative cups were carved in the form of an entire human body with a large head. Short neck and an abbreviated torso, lower limbs and feet. On other examples, the body is entirely absent, at the large head is positioned above a circular flaring base, or the depiction of an over-sized foot or feet facilitates the cup standing alone. The facial decoration and distinctive hairstyle on the heads of the decorated cups are consistent with other Kuba carving conventions, such as those displayed on Kuba masks. A sharply delineated hairline across the forehead, with abrupt angle at he temples, emphasizes the head and characteristic hairstyle. Some Kuba cups were most likely created to reference their owners' particular occupation or interest. For example. A cup

AFRICAN DUAL FACE CARVED KUBA CUP
From the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The cups were prestige items to the Kuba who used them for drinking palm wine. This cup has carved faces on both sides with scarifications. This Kuba cup measures 5 ½ inches tall and 3 inches wide and is hand-carved out of a single piece of wood with a nice brown patina. There are a few small chips at the base. I have been collecting for over 60 years and have many tribal art and antiques. Nothing in my collection is the“tourist” type. As with all used items and antiques. Some wear and tear is normal. Small splits. Scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. If anything has unusual cracks. Arts of Africa - Kuba Cup - Ghana - 5" Height x 3.5" Wide
Democratic Republic of the Congo Numbering about 250.000 the Kuba live in the area of central DRC bordered by the Sankuru, Kasai, and Lulua rivers. This is a region of valleys where numerous rivers flow south to north; the hills are covered with brush and the rivers are bordered by forests. Farming, aside from clearing the fields, was women’s work; they cultivate manioc, corn, gourds, bananas, pineapples, and palms. Tobacco was grown by the men. The hunt, a collective enterprise using nets, brought prestige and reinforced the social cohesion between the villagers. To fish the rivers required the participation of the entire village in order to build canoes. Although today most Kuba ethnic groups are organized into independent chiefdoms, they still recognize the authority of the Bushong king. The art of the Kuba is one of the most highly developed ... moreof all African traditions. And significant cultural accomplishments are part of their heritage. Among the best known of Kuba art forms are royal portrait figures, ndop. Idealized representations. An ndop may have played a role in the installation of the king. And during his life it is said to have been not only a portrait but also the soul double of the king. Whatever happened to him was believed to happen to it as well. Closely associated with the king’s fertility, the ndop was kept in the woman’s quarters. And was placed next to his wives during childbirth to ensure safe delivery. The kings typically sit facing forward with legs crossed. The left in front of the right; the right hand, with fingers extended, rests on the right knee, and the left hand holds the royal dagger. Geometric patterns cover the stomach and are continued on the back of the figure. The royal statues show the king wearing a rectangular shody hat. They are mounted on quadrangular pedestals. The sculptures include objects significant to each particular king, identifying his own personal accomplishments. Developing from the court style was a popular style, which utilized geometric forms instead of th

African Tribal Kuba Medicine Cup Dual Sided Hand Carved
Here's a magnificently carved African tribal medicine cup. Tribe and location of origin is unknown. It appears to be carved of Kuba Palm and is very original compared to others I have seen. This one has a face and leg on each side. There is a rest for what I imagine was a pestle of some sort since I do believe this probably belonged to a medicine man who would conjure up potions for the local villagers. Don't miss out on a one-of-a-kind piece of African history. Texas residents pay sales tax.
