They have played a central role in 20th century history of the country. They waged the longest war of resistance to French colonization of any West African people. And maintained their traditional objects and beliefs longer than many groups in such constant contact with European administrators, traders, and missionaries. The Baule belong to the Akan peoples who inhabit Ghana and West Coast. According to a legend, during the 18th century, the queen, Abla Poku, had to lead her people west to the shores of the Comoe, the land of Senufo. In order to cross the river, she sacrificed her own son. This sacrifice was the origin of the name Baule, for baouli means“the child has died. Now about one million Baule occupy a part of the eastern coast between the Komoé and Bandama rivers that is both forest and savanna land. Kplekple are regarded as playful masks. In some villages they are seen as the children. Red ones represent females and black males. They chase young women through the village. Teasing them. This particular mask has unusually shaped horns- bent pack. As well as the round mouth- usually it is triangular. Both of these represent artistic expression of the local carver. The Baule people inhabit the Central Ivory Coast. Their population is approximately 400.000 and the language is Baule(Akan cluster of Twi) The Baule create art in several different media. Including gold and brass casting(similar to their Asante ancestors) wooden sculptures, and mask and figure carving. Among the Baule of the Ivory Coast this dark painted circular mask surmounted by horns is known as Goli Kple kple. The surface shows traces of red pigment and wear. Historically the mask was a late introduction to the Baule who acquired it from the neighboring Wan people sometime around 1900. It appears during ceremonies celebrating the life and death of honored elders or at other times will dance to simply entertain the village or celebrate the harvest. The Grebo live in southeast Liberia at the border with the Ivory Coast. With the Bassa people on their west and the Bete and We to their east in the Ivory Coast. Grebo masks are best known for their influence on early western modern art being found in the collection of Picasso who obtained a Grebo mask from his dealer Kahnweiler in Paris. There is no doubt as to the influence of the Grebo style mask upon the development of western art for they are a complete example of geometry in sculpture with the flat face, square mouth, rounded forehead, triangular nose and tubular eyes. The startling geometry of this mask with the double lines of tube shaped eyes each, flanking the strong profile of the nose under the large bulging forehead and protruding lips is indeed a tour-de-force of sculpture. Little is known about the use of masks among the Grebo other than the fact that they are said to have been worn during wars by leaders as a kind of military costume. The mask has important frame covered with a cotton cloth and hebease of the mask is surrounded with fringes of raffia This mask comes from the Yaka and shows influence from the Suku and the Holo people. The Yaka originate from Angola and were conquered by the Lunda in the late 17th or early 18th century. Their political structure is strongly influenced by the Lunda from whom most of the chiefs Mwata Yaav of Kasongo-Lunda are affiliated. Their religion and culture are closely related to those of the peoples from the northeastern of Angola and the eastern Kongo. They have in common the practice of circumcision rites and initiation of young boys. Nkhaanda(nkhanda, Mukhanda, Mukanda) with these peoples. Their art is rich and well-known in Western because of the masks such as this and also their various figures. This is a beaututiful piece from the Ivory Coast. It is at least 30 years old. The bottom cross member is cracked through. But the way they dyed the wood, it makes me think this is supposed to be this way and represents hooves. There is an ape Monkey on the head of this mask, in between the antelope horns. The face is surrounded with a carved dented beard. The shinny patina adds to the beauty of this mask. This interesting mask shows stylistic elements common to the Yaure and Baule and even the Guro of Cote d'Ivoire. The Yaure are a smallish Akan culture. Closely related to the Baule and Guro. Their masks, like the one offered here, are similar in style to those of both groups, but usually have a few defining elements to aid in their identification. The most common are the serrated edges surrounding the lower border of the face. The Yaure used two types of masks, those that were black and those that were brightly painted. This primitive mask was among a group of extraordinary masks we purchased from a world traveler/collector. But have too many on the walls and need to start parting with some of them. This hand carved wood mask was brought back from the Ivory Coast. Features two natural horns coming from each side of the head and two swatches of hair-on-hide(top of head and below mouth) Each side of the mask has a narrow 9" long piece of what might be snakeskin. Along the chin line is a wider piece of what appears to be snakeskin, held in place with nails. Measures 12-1/2" X 7-1/4" excluding horns(15" wide including horns) CONDITION: previously owned older primitive mask. A section of the chin snakeskin is cracked but looks like it could be rather easy to hold in place with SuperGlue. No other structural damage.

Antique Carved Guro Mask Ivory Coast (Cote d'Ivoire) Africa Bird & Horns
For your consideration. This lovely wood mask is hand-carved by the Guro people(also called Gouro or Kweni) of the Ivory Coast(Côte d’Ivoire) in the valley regions of the Bandama River. The bird carved on top links the Guro people spiritually to that animal. I am not sure what kind of bird it is. Maybe a parrot by the colors. The Guro are the most prolific artists in Africa. This measures 8" wide X 16" tall and is 7" deep. There is a small chip at the back of the collar(see pic) but it is not visible from the front. I love the subtle. Pointed ears,large nose, square pierced eyes with projectiles and tubular forms under the eyes, a large open mouth with mustache. The surface has encrusted patina and shows some use and good age. This mask combines details that belong to the We and Dan styles as well as to the Grebo masking style. The Grebo live in southeast Liberia at the border with the Ivory Coast. With the Bassa people on their west and the Bete and We to their east in the Ivory Coast. There is no doubt as to the influence of the Grebo style mask upon the development of western art for they are a complete example of geometry in sculpture with the flat face, a long nose and tubular projectiles. Among the Wee and other neighboring groups masks like this are identified and named based upon their symbolic identification and if this well worn mask is indeed a âji glaâ mask it would have appeared with a very large costume of leaves or grasses and cloths attached covering the wearer so that he was invisible to viewers and to make the mask appear to. The present mask seems to come from the southwestern Igbo and was probably used to entertain the community. Among the Igbo. Such masks would also dance each year during the peak of the rainy season. Several southeastern Igbo groups stop regular activities for a full month to celebrate the time when water spirits descend from their homes in the clouds to dwell and cavort with human beings. These spirits materialize as masqueraders, who dance and strut and flog people in the villages. The white faced masks are female, and are kind. Their darker and uglier male counterparts are mischief makers. masquerade The ceremonies are believed to have been brought by a woman, but women are not allowed to participate. All these characters recall a Ogoni type of masks. Traces of use can be seen to the back and through the headdress of the mask.This is a well carved example of Ogoni masks. The Ogoni people live between the Lower Niger and the Cross River regions. In some ways it reflects the mixed traditions that exist along the Lower Niger and Cross Rivers regions of West Africa. A number of groups in this region share mask styles. Often drawing upon one another for imagery and perhaps even carvers who have some degree of mobility. The sober form of the Ogoni faces contrasts with the grotesque face of Ibibio style. The form of the headdress and mouth are particularly of Ogoni style. This mask is surmounted with two strong carved horns. Symbols of masculinity, which means the mask portrays a male character, and would likely play an aggressive character during the performances. This Baule mask falls into a special grouping known as âportrait masksâ. Kpan Pre, Kpan Kpan. These masks are said to portray an honored person of the village who is celebrated during a ceremonial dance known as âMbloâ. It is an esthetic performance in which this beautifully carved mask would be worn with a multicolored costume and danced in the most graceful manner by either the person it represents or a relative. The costume would have been attached to the broad collar of the mask by cords that were threaded through the holes at the back of the mask. I picked it up at a local estate sale. This mask has horns or some sort of head dress and nose jewelry. It is painted or stained black with red. White and yellow paint. This wood is not a hardwood. CONDITION: It looks old and there is dry rot in the horns with some material loss and some chunks of wood(1-2" that are loosely attached to the horn. The damage is worse on the mask's left horn. There are holes in the side that indicate it once had ears or something else attached. There is a hole in the bottom with a broken off dowel indicating it once stood on a stick or was a part of a larger piece.
