Passport mask– Dan people. Liberia and Côte d'Ivoire. West Africa Depending on usage and other factors. Passport masks may have various surface ... morepatinas; encrusted; worn/ displayed or also possibly“hidden” and used as a protective amulet of sort. Some have very little wear… Even not worn at all(stored privately) This particular passport mask shows some use and handling but appears to have been privately stored for the most part. Condition: see photos) Measures approximately 6 inches tall x 4 inches wide x 3 inches deep. Estimated around the middle of the 20 th Century. Interesting over-all and consistent“pitted” characteristic of the wood used to carve this mask. A stable age crack exists at the chin. This crack has not migrated what-so-ever during the time I have had this mask(nearly 10 years) Cowrie shells and cotton cloth. Such passport masks are not commonly found. This is an excellent opportunity. International buyers. Shipping costs will be higher.

Type of Object, Passport Mask, Country of Origin, Liberia. Cote d'Ivoire, People, Dan, Materials, Wood. Rope, pigment Approximate Age, second half ... more20th century, Dimensions, 5.5 inches H. x 3.5 inches W. Overall Condition, Good. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, shallow crack to the back. Scrapes and chips, Additional information: Miniature masks often called"passport" masks are found among the various peoples of Liberia and Ivory Coast. Including the Dan, Yacouba, Gio, Wenion(We, Guere) Geh, Loma, Konor, and Bete. This one comes from the Dan people. Sharing a wide variety of uses they are the personal masks of initiated adult men and would be carried on their person or kept on personal shrines in the home. They carried small"passport" masks in leather pouches when they traveled. Passport masks serve to mark the passage of an initiate into the men secret society and his elevation into the higher ranks. The small masks may be presented at meetings of senior members of the men society to indicate their right to be present and participate in the deliberations. Diviner’s would recommend that small masks be given to children to wear to ward off evil witches or cure illnesses. Small masks placed on shrines would receive the offerings and prayers of their owners and in time would accumulate a rich patina of different substances that could obscure their features. Most of these miniature masks mirror the shape and features of the larger masks that they were modeled after. Like the full-sized dance masks the smaller masks reflect the great diversity of styles and forms of the larger masks. 69184* All content.

Available is this Vintage Dan Ivory Coast Mni Miniature Passport Mask. It measures approximately 5" tall. I'm not an expert in African masks or art, but ... moremy guess is that this was made in 1960 or later. The charming patina gives it an aged look, though it could have been made to look like that. Regardless it is a handsome cool mask. Imagine it mounted on a metal rod with wood base! Please see images for condition as they serve as part of the overall description. BEAUTIFUL OLD DAN PEOPLE MINIATURE PASSPORT MASK FROM LIBERIA
You are bidding on a Rare and OLD Tribal DAN PEOPLE Miniature Passport Mask from Liberia. Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Dan sculptors mainly produce masks which deal with virtually every element in Dan society. Including education, competition, war, peace, social regulation, and of course, entertainment. They also produce stylized wooden spoons and intricate game boards used for mancala, a common game of"count and capture" The Dan world view holds that everything can be divided into two separate and clear categories. The primary dichotomy is between village and bush. In other words, things that have been controlled by man and things that have not. Crossing over the dividing line is dangerous business, and whenever it is done, whether to clear new fields or simply crossing the forest, the bush spirits must be appeased. In order ... moreto take part in village life, the bush spirits must take corporeal form. The Dan believe that all creatures have a spirit soul(du) which is imparted onto humans and animals from the creator god, Xra, through birth. One's du is immortal and is passed on after death to a new being. However, some du remain bodiless. They inhabit the forests as bush spirits and must establish a relationship with a person if they wish to be manifested and honored. Often the spirit will request the chosen person to dance the spirit, utilizing a mask to illustrate the spirit's embodiment. Social cohesion was fostered by a shared language and a preference for intermarriage. Generally. Each village had a headman who had earned his position of advantage in the community through hard work in the fields and through luck as a hunter. They usually surrounded themselves with young warriors for protection from invading neighbours and exchanged gifts with other chiefs in order to heighten their own prestige. Out of this custom was born the basic tradition of tin among the Dan, which was based on displaying one's success in order to build a good reputation and name. Economy: The African tradition of tin working is still an essential part of the Dan economy today. Young people strive to make a name for themselves by lavishly spending at community feasts to demonstrate their wealth. Although farming

From a cultural viewpoint the Dan are close to the We populations situated in forest regions of the south, and against whom they have waged innumerable wars. Lacking a central authority. The various groups had neither a political institution nor unity. The village is under authority of a chief and a council of elders. In addition, there were male associations that attempted to bring about a socio-political unity, reinforcing rules of behavior, demanding absolute loyalty and obedience from members, and giving an initiatory education to the young. These societies called upon the tutelary spirits of the bush. The most powerful, even today, is the secret society of the leopard, the go, which, without having fully achieved its stabilizing and unifying goal, nevertheless grows from one year t

Dan Bagle Mask, Liberia Cote d'Ivoire Guinea, African art Gioh Yakuba passport
Dan masks are considered a real treasure in African art. Both immediately recognizable and highly collectible. They can range from very simple to extremely ornate, are finely carved, and one could almost say archetypical of the'African Mask' ideal. Above anything, they are most interesting because of the beliefs that govern their production. The masks are considered highly sacred in the Dan culture, whose distribution ranges from Cote d'Ivoire to Liberia to Guinea. In many African cultures, the masks are representative of spirits, but in the case of the Dan, the mask IS the spirit, a tangible embodiment of the spirit itself. There are a variety of Dan face masks, each of which has a different function. They may be an intermediary, who acts between the village and the forest in initiation camps, wherein adolescent boys are segregated ... morefrom the general population, or may act to work against brush fires during the dry season. They may also be used in pre-war ceremonies, for peace-making ceremonies, or simply for games and entertainment purposes. As with most masks in the Dan pantheon, this bagle mask would have been used primarily for entertainment and social bonding ceremonies, rather than for rites or initiations controlled by secret societies. Dan masks such as these would generally be owned by individual families, and the masqueraders are known even today as being especially talented dancers. This piece is in very good condition, with most of its embellishments remaining in place and in decent or better condition. The cowries around the crest traditionally signify prosperity, and the mask features three bells attached to its lower perimeter, which add considerably to the masquerade performance, as they keep a beat with the dancer as they dance to music. Standard wear marks are in evidence, as well as what appears to be salt deposits around the perimeter of the rear of the mask, probably the result of sweat. We do not have an ironclad provenance on the piece however, so these are merely speculation. In
