Both immediately recognizable and highly collectible. They can range from very simple to extremely ornate, are finely carved, and one could almost say archetypical of the'African Mask' ideal. Above anything, they are most interesting because of the beliefs that govern their production. The masks are considered highly sacred in the Dan culture, whose distribution ranges from Cote d'Ivoire to Liberia to Guinea. In many African cultures, the masks are representative of spirits, but in the case of the Dan, the mask IS the spirit, a tangible embodiment of the spirit itself. There are a variety of Dan face masks, each of which has a different function. They may be an intermediary, who acts between the village and the forest in initiation camps, wherein adolescent boys are segregated from the general population, or may act to work against brush fires during the dry season. They may also be used in pre-war ceremonies, for peace-making ceremonies, or simply for games and entertainment purposes. A common form of mask among the Dan people. The"passport" mask, as it is referred to by western cultures, was often carried by those traveling away from their village, and they were said to offer protection during such times. Brass bells and amulets with charms wrapped in cotton cloth. This is a Dan mask known as âZakpai geâ(or Zakpei Ge) or Gunye Ge(gunyege) an active and aggressive mask that serves a number of functions. When performing as a âfirewatchâ mask, Zakpai would insure proper use of cooking fires by women and will throw sticks and things about and knock over cook pots with their meals into the fires and may even beat the women if they were careless in their use of fire. In the past it also served as a war mask. Becker Dan Cobley Mini Egg Hybrid Pod Surfboard - 6'6" Water tight. Low rocker.
The shape is a Dan Cobley custom that was created for me as I moved from hybrid boards to true short boards. It glides very well. But can turn quickly because of it's relatively short length. The rounded pin tail holds well in bigger surf and makes turning graceful and secure. The nose is wide and the foil of the board is generally full to make paddling and catching waves easier. Rails are full, except back by the rounded pin tail. Dimensions: 6'6" x 19 3/4" x 2 3/8" is written on the board. But the thickness of 2 3/8" is brought way out towards the rails so it feels and rides thicker than it measures. Includes FCS G-AM fins. I weighed 175-180 lbs when I used this board most often. But could work for people from about 165-190 lbs, is my guess. I've caught tons of waves on this thing, I'm just moving now ... moreto even smaller boards. The board is relatively young(less than two years? But it has a number of scratches from Leo Carrillo State Park's rocky break(see photos) The scratches and dings are all repaired and are water tight. The board is light and strong and floats very well. The foam is still very white. This board is for local pickup in Glendale. California only. Depending on my schedule(and the surf) I may be willing to deliver to Los Angeles area beaches(or even San Clemente or Ventura) but only with a commitment to purchase and advance payment and only if there's surf in the water and I'm eager to head down there anyway. The serial number on the neck(pictured) looks like D803A Just under 10 pounds! This guitar is in great playing condition. But does have its share of cosmetic flaws, that will be noted below. PLEASE LOOK AT ALL PICS FOR COSMETIC DETAIL. THEY ARE THE TRUE DESCRIPTION. Condition& Flaws Noted: There is normal wear for a played guitar of this age. It has scratches. And marks here and there, the original pick guard has a small piece missing at the tip and was damaged at the jack. It was patched and is sturdy. Original owner engraved a number in the back of the headstock and lightly on the body near the heel. There is some of the original brown plastic covering coming off of the original ... morepickup. This is a Wesley plexiglass guitar. Sort of like a three-way cross between a Dan Armstrong, a Steinberger"cricket bat" and a travel guitar, and its an awful lot of fun to play! It is unencumbered with a lot of extra gadgets. Gizmos and frills, having a hard tail body, a bridge position humbucker and a volume control. It really is the ultimate in"plug and play" Tone wise. The pickup has a surprising power to it for what is basically a travel guitar- you might feel a bit daft playing it on a Saturday night at the Old Dog and Duck, but I guarantee that if you did, it wouldn't let you down. 1983 Vintage Fender American Stratocaster Dan Smith ERA Freeflyte tremolo w/CASE 1983 Fender Stratocaster The Dan Smith Stratocaster with Freeflyte tremolo I found the following very usefull information about the story behind this made in America. Fender Stratocaster In 1981 Fender-CBS hired William(Bill) Schultz. John McLaren, and Dan Smith away from the U.S. division of Yamaha. Schultz became the president of Fender-CBS, McLaren the managing director, and Smith was appointed the director of marketing for Fender electric guitars. In an effort to improve Fender's market position. Smith orchestrated a revamping of the basic production model Stratocaster and by late 1981 the new model was introduced as the Standard Stratocaster. It featured a more accurate version of the pre-CBS smaller headstock(compared to the 1980"Strat" a ... morefour bolt neck plate; the somewhat"hotter" X-1 pickup(introduced in the 1980"Strat" model) in the bridge position; and, a body end truss rod adjustment(no bullet) What it did retain from its predecessor was the 70s-style headstock decal. Otherwise, the 1981 Standard Stratocaster signalled the end of the CBS 70s style Stratocaster. The 1981 Standard Stratocaster was produced until 1983. When it was significantly revised by placing the jack plug on the pickguard flush with the body and offering only one tone control instead of two. The CBS 70s style headstock decal was also changed to a smaller, silver logo style that would be subsequently used in the 1987 American Standard. It's the 1981-83 first version of the Standard Stratocaster that has come to be known on the street(and in third party literature) as the"Dan Smith Stratocaster" You won't see Smith's name on the headstock.
