LARGE RARE DINKA HEADREST / SHIELD / STOOL (SUDAN)
This is one of the rare form of Dinka headrests(from southern Sudan) that doubles as a shield. Thus the handle carved into the underside. This is the only form of headrest I know that is legitimately made of multiple pieces of wood. Headrests of this style have four legs stuck in the bottom of the piece to facilitate use as a pillow or seat. Like all well-used tribal pieces. This headrest has minor imperfections from the hand tools used in its construction, and from the wear and tear of extensive tribal use. This piece is part of a private collection that is being broken up. Dimensions: 17 X 6 5/8 X 6 1/2 inches Weight: 2.4 pounds

Dinka headrests are carved from one piece of wood, and can serve as both pillow and stool. Like all well-used tribal pieces. This headrest has minor imperfections from the hand tools used in its construction, and from the wear and tear of extensive tribal use. As seen in the photos, this headrest also has an old break on one of the spikes that is part of the side decoration. The break does not reduce the piece's functionality or strength. This piece is part of a private collection that is being sold off. Dimensions: 19 X 10 X 4.75 inches Weight: 3.2 pounds

61 in.TALL EARLY BONGO FUNERARY POST STATUE FIGURE SUDAN, BELANDA ZANDE DINKA
African art African art African art African art Sudan, Belanda Zande Dinka mid,19th century It has a beautiful deep rich patina. The notes I have on this figure actually dated it much earlier than I. 18th century) I feel more comfortable of an age of 1840s-1880s. I'm not an expert. Its a large size too. Over 5 feet. 60+ inches tall. Its appearance is stunning. These large funerary sculptures come mainly from the Bongo people of Southern Sudan. These grave posts first caught the attention of travelers in the 1800s when travelers reported large sculpture funerary markers placed above tombs. Those ridges running up to the top of the post is purportedly indicate an enemy or a large animal killed. The mwingili wood used for these Bongo sculptures associated with funerary practices are dug up with the root and cut. Carved, and then when its ... moreused, its buried deep either in the center of a grave, or in front of a tomb mound, which would then be surrounded by stone. The tombs were near villages and these sculptures were fully exposed to all the elements. The hot. Humid, sultry, turned crackling dry weather, played an important role in the use of this type of wood. It had to survive that and the white ants, worms, rainy season, floods, drought, animals, and the thousands of insects as well. Because of the listed elements above, the whole village would have to just pick up and move to another location, leaving behind these grave sights that would then just get swallowed up and lost in the great Savanna. That tree root with the sculpture post could also explain why most of these post were a long time later found. And hacked down with a machete and are flat at the bottom. Mine is not. This one appears to have been eaten up with ant bites, worm holes, looks like its bottom has been eroded over time by flood water, dried and fried in the Sun, and to me, that all just makes it look wonderful. And I think the spirits I feel from it are good. I love it. Its a heavy piece of wood. Its very dense. The type of wood this is referr
