Overall Condition, Poor, Damage/Repair, flaking pigment. Old insect damage arrested, several holes and chips;cracks in face, to the back, in feet; dust on the surface, Additional Information: A Punu Standing Female Ancestor Figure with elaborate hairstyle scarification in forehead. Chest, and belly body painted in white The Punu. Like their relatives the Shira and the Lumbo, fled the Fang and settled in the equatorial forests of southern Gabon. Little is known about their history or way of life. They do appear to have connections to the Fang and Kota in their religious and ancestral rituals. The Punu are known for their maiden spirit masks with white face used in the context of the Mukuji society. Most of the known Punu statues are small works with face painted in white as on their masks, thought to be used as guardian figures. Sculpted figures among the Punu have been identified as prestige and magical figures during special ceremonies. They were placed in close proximity to funerary bundles of revered ancestors. On this figure. The white pigment as well as the closed eyes reflect the spirituality and the face of the figure with its high eyebrow and forehead markings are based upon the marvelously carved Mukudj masks active among the Punu. Mukudj masks were worn by male dancers at funerals of honored elder males in which the white face portrays an idealized female with a well defined helmet-like hair style that crowns her head and surrounds her face. Though the face has a calm expression the figure is shown in a dance that is of great vigor and movement and she maintains her sense of composure and calm. The elegant coiffure and body and the face marking portray the figure as a mature woman of great composure and beauty, balancing action to an extraordinary sense of reserve. With the Eshira. The Lumbo, the Vili, the Galoa, and the Vungu people, the Punu migrated northwards during the 18th century and settled in the area where they continue to inhabit to this day. They live in independent villages divided into clans and families, and social cohesion is ensured by a society known as moukouji. Its primary role is to regulate community life with regards to social and judicial matters, and mainly it applies itself to the neutralization of evil forces. To this end, officiates of moukoudji utilize a cult kit that includes statuettes, human relics and masks. Punu masks represent idealized female ancestors' faces. The white color of the mask is genderless; white is a symbol for peace. Deities, spirits of the dead, and the afterlife. It is thus the predominating color in funeral celebrations and memorials. Therefore the masks were worn during funerals. They appeared also in the magical rites whose function was to unmask sorcerers. The masks have realistic, m

VINTAGE AFRICAN OKUYI PUNU MASK GABON
Okuyi" mask. Punu people, Gabon. Carved wood, kaolin paint, raffia fibers. The wood mask is 19 in. 48 cm) high, 12 1/4 in. 31 cm) wide, 9 in. 23 cm) deep. In the lower portion is a"handle" Which is very rarely seen on Punu masks. It is carved from the same single piece of wood as the mask. The mask shows certain signs of wear and tear, such as stains from body grease on the inside, the wormholes and a few cracks. A crude attempt was made to stabilize one of the cracks with a black pitch. There is a small chip in a kaolin coating on the tip of the nose. The raffia fibers are brown in color, still quite flexible, though they break a little when handled. This is not one of the new tourist trade masks that are being exported from Africa these days. I believe this one saw a ceremonial use- indicated by sweat stains on the inside ... moreand a crudely repaired crack. The wormholes also point to its older age. The insects are not active anymore. However. The white kaolin coating of the face appears to be of a newer date- it must have been reapplied later, possibly after the cracks in the wood were patched up. The raffia collar was most likely redone at that time. The Okuyi masks have a quite unusual appeal to collectors. Maybe it is their white faces. The rectangular geometric designs on the cheeks and forehead, or their unexplainable resemblance to Japanese Noh masks. The authentic 19th century Okuyi masks with proven provenance bring at auctions in access of a quarter million dollars. Those from the last century sell from $3,000 up. I believe this mask to be from around mid 20th century. Condition: There are cracks in a wood and in a white kaolin coating. Also wormholes. The tip of a nose in chipped. Minor abrasions and scratches. Raffia fibers are fragile. Payment terms: I accept payments by credit/debit cards via PayPal. California residents please add 8% sales tax to the winning bid. Shipping terms: The item will be shipped as soon as the payment is deposited to my account. It will be sent to the US address

Authentic Vintage Worn African Art Punu / Lumbo Tribal Okuyi Dancer Mask Gabon

Africa(Punu/ Lumbo/ Lumbu tribe) It measures 12.7" x 8.6" x 4.5" It is in good condition with one of its rope tie strings still in place. Much of the white clay has fallen off of the face(a thin coat of plaster could easily be applied to achieve the correct appearance) I will pack the mask as safely as possible, but the clay continues to shed from the face area. Antique Punu Tribe African Mask
This mask is an authentic Punu tribe mask. It is carved with one piece of wood. Punu masks represent the idealized beauty of Punu women. And should only be carved by Punu men. They are portrayed with their traditional high-domed hairstyle. Diamond- shaped scarification marks on their forehead and they often have eyes that display oriental characteristics. The elaborate Punu hairstyles suggest that the wearer is wealthy as her hair has not been flattened by the need to carry goods. Sometimes Punu masks are painted white with kaolin clay to represent the spirits of dead ancestors during funerals. Please inspect all the photos or ask questions. The mask is 10 1/2 inches tall. 9 inches wide and 9 1/2 inches deep.
