Read more about the culture behind these masks by visiting the website Zyama(dot com) An excerpt from this site appears below. This seller is not affiliated with the operator of the Zyama site. The Bambara numbering 2.500.000 million form the largest ethnic group within Mali. The triangle of the Bambara region, divided in two parts by the Niger River, constitutes the greater part of the western and southern Mali of today. The dry savanna permits no more than a subsistence economy, and the soil produces, with some difficulty, corn, millet, sorghum, rice, and beans. Their traditions include six male societies, each with its own type of mask. Initiation for men lasts for seven years and ends with their symbolic death and their rebirth. Nearly every Bambara man had to pass through these societies in succession, until, upon reaching the highest ... morerank, he had acquired a comprehensive knowledge of ancestral traditions. The jo society has become a sort of framework for other initiation society. Until a few decades ago. Initiation was obligatory for every young man. Jo initiations take place every seven years, after candidates receive six years of special training. During this time, the young men go through a ritual death and live one week in the bush before returning to the village. There they publicly perform the dances and songsthey have learned in the bush, and receive small presents from spectators. After a ritual bath that signals the end of their animal life, the new initiates become“Jo children. Initially the ntomo was a society for uncircumcised boys. Today it closely resembles various Western associations in its bureaucratic structure and its administrative and membership fees. There are two main style groups of their masks. One is characterized by an oval face with four to ten horns in a row on top like a comb. Often covered with cowries or dried red berries. The other type has a ridged nose, a protruding mouth, a superstructure of vertical horns, in the middle of which or in front of which is a standing fi

Exhibited Senufo Kpelie Mask Kepelie Kpeli-yehe Ivory Coast and Mali- no reserve
A beautifully symmetric Senufo Kpelie mask. The depiction of palm nuts at the top of the mask symbolize the wood carving profession. I purchased this three years ago from a private French collector. They described it as 19th century but I believe it is from the second half 20th century. I could be wrong. In 2009 portions of my collection were exhibited at the University of Maryland's Mosely Gallery- the exhibition was called"Honoring the Ancestors. Only 170 of my 300+ items could fit in the gallery. This mask was exhibited in that exhibition. You can see it hanging on the wall. I have included photos of that installation as well as other items I am selling or will be selling soon. This Kpeli-yehe mask combines elements of Senufo mythology and culturally known symbols. The horns are those of the powerful buffalo important to Poro ... moreinitiates. The small legs below the chin symbolize the hornbill bird. One of the Senufo primordial creatures and the first to be hunted by men. The heart-shaped face and protruding lips are style elements of Senufo sculpture. Kepelie masks would dance a funeral of elder women and men, the newly dead that have now joined the ancestors. The Senufo are a large dispersed population living primarily in Ivory Coast and Mali in small self-administered villages supporting themselves primarily as farmers. Though generally autonomous the villages are joined through a shared menâ's secret society known as Poro or Pondo that is responsible for the initiation of young boys and men into different levels of society and to exercise social control and instruct members and initiates in religious wisdom and knowledge of the bush spirits. Women have their counterpart to this ion their divination society known as Sando. Among the Senufo people funerary ceremonies serve as a primary occasion for the appearance art during ritual displays. It is during the funerals of senior members of the Poro society and woman's society that dances to celebrate the life of the deceased. Size: Height: 13&qu
1920s? Senufo Kpelie Mask Kepelie Kpeli-yehe Ivory Coast and Mali - no reserve
A nice Senufo Kpelie mask with nice encrustation and wear. Great color. The hornbill depi cted o n the top of the mask is one of the first creatures on earth in Senufo mythology- is an important symbol for the Senufo and appears on many of their carvings. I purchased this from a British man who s aid his grandfather worked the dock in London in the 1920s and would by items from sailors returning from Africa. He said this was one such item. I have no idea i f that is true. Although it was always owned and worn by a man. Kpelie represented the concept of feminine beauty and fertility. The unique features which characterize the Kpelie mask include elongated flanges radiating from the bottom part of the mask, which are a reference to the hornbill bird. The horns on the mask refer to the ram. An important sacrificial animal. The nodules on the ... moreforehead represent palm nuts as well as vulvas; they are flanked by cicatrization marks that symbolize the twins born to the primordial couple. The Kpelie mask was used at initiation in the societies for boys. Adolescents, and adults, at funeral rituals designed to lead the spirit into the land of the dead, and at harvest festivals to thank the ancestors for a good crop. Kpelie- whether in carved wood or cast bronze copper alloy- are usually oval in shape with arched crescent shaped eyebrows over narrow slit eyes. The small mouth opens below a slender nose. Scarification marks add to presentation of what is considered beautiful to the Senufo. On either side of the temples are semicircular and rectangular shapes that represent the stylized coiffure worn by Senufo mothers; the center shapes at the side representing ears. Animal horns- bull. Ram or antelope- represent male attributes of the masquerade. There are often two appendages on either side of the chin, legs" that connect the spirit to the earth. Most important are the figures on the head, which represent an ancestor closely connected with the society's origin. The figures worn depend on the caste group to which the

The artistic diversity of the Bamana is without doubt one of the most astounding. And confounding, of all West African groups. It is interesting that perhaps their closest rivals in complexity are their neighbors to the north and east, the Dogon, with whom they share certain stylistic similarities. Complex religious, funerary, initiation, and agricultural rites have resulted in an enormous pantheon of ritual objects. When collectors think of Bamana, the image of a"chi wara" often leaps to mind. These stunning, zoomorphic headdresses, danced during the planting of crops, employ the carved head and horns of antelopes, as well as zig-zag, open-work designs, reportedly representing the path of the sun. A basketry, cap-like structure is attached to the bottom so that it can be worn. Other recognizable masks are not as well understood, and their use reflects the mind-boggling complexity of the predominantly animist Bamana religion. Among these are the animal-form masks such as this, often quite abstract, used in the"kono" and"kore" societi

The attitude shown toward them by other Senufo is a mixture of fear and respect, owing to their privileged relationship with the natural forces that they are capable of channeling in a sculpture. During initiations, headpieces are worn that have a flat, vertical, round or rectangular board on top decorated with paint or pierced work. Many wood carvings of male figures depict these headpieces, sometimes on rhythm pounders used by young initiates, who beat the earth to call upon the ancestors to take part in the ceremony and purify the earth. The carvers also produce ritual female statues, including mother-and-child ... morefigures, as well as statuettes depicting bush spirits and supernatural beings and equestrian figures. Large statues representing hornbills(often seen also on masks) and used in the lo society as symbols of fertility are the standing birds called porpianong. Figures of the hornbill are used in initiation. And groups of birds on a pole are trophies for the best farmer. Figures of male and female twins and of horsemen are used in divination. These represent the spirit familiars enabling the divination process. The diviners themselves are women, forming the sandogo society. Shrine doors and drums are carved in relief. And small figures and ritual rings are cast in bronze. Several types of mask are used depending upon the occasion. The kpelie. A human face with projections all around. Is said to remind initiates of human imperfection. Danced by men, these masks perform as female characters. Animal-head masks like the harvest mask usually combine characteristics of several creatures-hyena, warthog, and antelope. A type of animal mask called waniugo has a cup for a magical substance on top; these masks blow sparks from their muzzles in a nighttime ritual protecting the village f

AFRICAN BAMBARA CHI WARA TCHIWARA HEADDRESS MASK MALI WILMINGTON COLLECTION
Bambara Tchi Wara(or Tji-Wara. Chi Wara) Antelope Headdress- Mali Early-Mid 20th Century. Original Wood. Metal, cloth, leather, cowrie shell, pigment, patina Length 60.9cm( 24in) Property from a Wilmington Collection in Delaware Detailed provenance documentation on file and can accompany the artifact for historical conservation purposes. In Africa. Animal imagery is used to teach moral and historical lessons. Distinctive physical or behavioral traits may be combined to create mythical creatures with greater powers. These Bamana crest masks combine the horns of the antelope, the body of the aardvark and the textured skin of the pangolin-all animals that dig in the earth. Despite regional stylistic differences, they all represent Chi Wara, the supernatural being who taught people to farm. Young men wear paired male and female masks in dances ... morethat praise and encourage good farmers. However, because of the introduction of the yoked plow, conversion to Islam and changes in patterns of employment and schooling, the performances have become increasingly more of a popular entertainment than an initiation society ceremony. This wonderful Chi Wara headdress was acquired from a Wilmington collector who amassed a large collection West African materials. Appropriate of age, origin and medium. ►SUPERB OLD DOGON MASK w/ NOMMO SUPERSTRUCTURE ►24" TALL ~ African Art (Mali)
For further details, please visit the item description at our Website(click on the image above) Superb Old Dogon Mask with Nommo Superstructure(Mali) Description: On offer from our personal collection is this distinctive old face mask from the Dogon peoples of Mali. One of our first acquisitions of ethnographic art. We were fortunate to acquire this piece in the early 1970s from private collectors/dealers who left their native Africa to journey to the U.S. to exhibit the remarkable tribal antiquities field-collected by their father, who had remained in Africa. We believe this piece dates back to the 1940s or'50s. With its thin-walled construction. This well-carved mask is tall, rather slender, exhibits classic features. Incised scarifications create multiple patterns across the face, as well as on the torso& arms of the nommo superstructure ... moreperched atop the mask. Set in under the brow, open triangles form the eyes of the mask, while the nose takes on the traditional'arrow' shape used by the Dogon in much of their carvings, not least of which is the nommo figure that adorns this piece. Zoomorphic ears frame the upper brow of the mask's face. The powerful, crouching nommo superstructure bears hermaphroditic characteristics with its breasts& bearded face. Attachment holes perforate the side-rims of the piece. With a fine. Well-developed patina, the mask shows age- use-related wear. Despite some imperfections in the wood, including old insect damage(arrested) scrapes& abrasions, dry age-cracks, a few old chips(including those along the bottom& back rims) the mask is in good overall condition. A small area to the left on the mask's upper brow has worn through, forming a small, irregular hole. At just over 24-inches in height, this imposing piece makes a powerful, compelling display, would be an exce
Dogon Monkey Mask Dege Mali African
Title, Dogon Monkey Mask Dege Mask, Type of Object, Mask, Country of Origin, Mali, People, Dogon, Materials, Wood, Approximate Age, Second half 20th century, Dimensions, 15 inches H. x 8 inches W. Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, chips. Scratches, stains, marking in the back Additional Information: A facial mask with an abstract face characterized by large open square mouth and large ears. The forehead is domed and shadowed the square pierced eyes. The nose stylized as well as the mouth. This mask is a representation of a so-called Dege or black monkey black mask. The Dege or Black Monkey masks of the Dogon fall into a category that is defined as predatory masks in that they are predators of human crops and animals though human-like in form exhibit the reverse of desired human behavior. When funerary ceremonies take place the ... moreDege mask sits at the side making lewd and sexual gestures reflecting the reversal of proper Dogon conduct. Monkeys are thought to be gluttons. Irrational and unpredictable in their actions, all the reverse of what is considered normative and acceptable human demeanor. They provide the anti-esthetic and anti-humanistic mirror to human behavior that is to be shunned or corrected. Dege represents the dark forces of sorcery and are to be feared. This is a powerful carving with an interesting sense of design and execution. It would be well placed in any collection. See a close similar example in Francine Ndiaye. L'art du pays Dogon. Dans les collections du Musee de l'Homme 1995 Museum Rietberg Zurich, fig.37, p.59. I have examined this piece and agree with the description. Niangi Batulukisi. PhD. 68726* All content. Superb DOGON LION MASK MALI #2081 ~ For African Art Gallery
DOGON LION MASK#2081 Tribe: Dogon. Country: Mali. Material: Wood. Size: 13.5" 34.3 cm) Tall. Item: 2081 Condition: Good. Provenance: James E Adkins Estate Collection. Florida, USA) There are nearly eighty styles of Dogon masks. And for the most part they all utilize the use of various geometric shapes in their design, independent of the various animals they are supposed to represent. Most masks have large geometric eyes and stylized features and are often painted or colored with various substances. The Dogon continue an ancient masquerading tradition called"Dama" which commemorates the origin of death. Dama memorial ceremonies are held to accompany the dead into the ancestral realm and restore order to the universe. In these ceremonies there are a large number of performers, often a few hundred, and it is considered absolutely ... morenecessary to the ceremony. In the case of the dama, the timing, types of masks involved, and other ritual elements are often specific to one or two villages and may not resemble those seen in locations only several miles distant. The masks also appear during baga-bundo rites performed by small numbers of masqueraders before the burial of a male Dogon. The better known Kanaga and sirige masks are followed in the dama ceremony by masks that evoke the behavior of some of the animals that inhabit the regions where the Dogon live and hunt. They include among others- antelopes. Hares, lions, hyenas, cows, birds and monkeys. The 400.000 Dogon live 180 miles south of Timbuktu on the cliffs of Bandiagara, which dominate the plains for over 150 miles. They speak approximately 120 dialects, many of which are not mutually comprehensible. At first hunters, now on their small fields they cultivate millet, sorghum, wheat, and onion. The millet is stored in high quadrangular granaries around which they build their houses. Because of the difficult approach to these regions and the aridity of the climate, the Dogon have been isolated and hence were able to conserve their ancient religious habi
Bamana Mask Forged Iron Mali African
Title, Bamana Forged Iron Mask Mali Africa, Type of Object, mask, Country of Origin, Mali, People, Bamana, Materials, Iron, Approximate Age, unknown, Dimensions, 9.75 inches H. x 6.25 inches, Overall Condition, Good. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, Rusted surface. Chips in eyes and in the back Additional Information: There have been a number of iron mask-like sculptures from the Bamana of Mali. There is a long tradition of figurative ... moreiron. Bronze and brass casting in the Western Sudan reaching back to the period of the great Empire of Mali as early as the 12 th century. The age of this interestingly cast iron mask is undetermined but it does reflect an earlier period of bronze or brass casting. The facial features on this mask are similar to those found on wood sculptures from the Bamana. These masks are forged by blacksmiths working them into shapes that could be worn. Simply carried, or kept in a ritual location. Today there is no active tradition of these masks being used. In fact as little is known about forged iron masks among the Bamana or Dogon or Senufo or any of the Western Sudanic groups it would be conjecture to assert more than this at this time. This mask does indicate the skill of the blacksmith in forging a mask out of iron. A medium much more difficult to work than wood. 72619* All content. Hollow Wood Cells Because of the misunderstanding regarding hollow wood cells. A brief explanation is needed. Any person dating carvings has many criteria to determine age. The breakdown of the wood cells is an important aspect of age determination. The strength of the wood is the outer edge of cells. The cell center(like bone marrow) is the passageway that feeds the wood. This center lacks strength as it is softer then the cell walls, thus it disintegrates more quickly. Laboratories determine the progress of the cell center decay to determine the wood age. This varies some by the tree variety also the location of the carving must be considered. It is difficult if not impossible to find a 300 year old carving in the tropics as humidity speeds destruction. Also wood eating insects are a big problem. Many of the Dogon areas are in the dessert above the insect line. Pieces can and are stored above the insect line for many centuries in this very dry climate. The study of providence shows it takes 250 to 300 years for a dry climate stored Dogon piece to get hollow wood cells. This is factual and not a guess. Even with Dogon. Jim's experiences in Africa has shown that

The symbolism of this mask identifies it as a suruku mask of the Kore society. Suruku masks are seen as a combination of human and hyena features. Hyenas are thought by the Bamana to represent foolish behavior reflecting an uninformed view of the world. Very much like the young male initiates. Carved in secret by the by the blacksmith the mask was made from a single piece of wood and reflects the skill of the Bamana sculptor. Recommended reading: Sarah C. Brett-Smith. Similar to the Bobo in both their agrarian society. And in their style of mask production, the Bwa are a moderately sized group of people stretching through parts of Burkina Faso and Mali. They exist in something of a caste system, dilineated into three primary male professions; the farmers, the blacksmiths, and the artists. These masks are the products of the latter caste. The majority of Bwa masks are what are considere'plank ... moremasks' masks that are often rather large and flat, often extending laterally, or vertically, or taking a circular form. They are, for the most part, rendered in abstract. Each mask produced by the Bwa people is representative of a spirit of the wilderness encountered by a family elder. An effigy of this spirit is then produced in the form of a mask for the purpose of protection for that elder's family. This beautiful circular spirit mask features a common Bwa theme of alternating geometric patterning. Pigmented with traditional colors of red, black, and white. The spirits features are carved in a traditional form, abstract, but vaguely anthropomorphic. This simplistic round style is reasonably common, and well documented in the pantheon of Bwa masks. It is relatively small for a Bwa mask, but not necessarily small relative to other masks. On the rear facade is a tie-on area where the wearer's face would be secured to the mask via cordage. It displays normal age related markings, including minor dents, scratches, age cracking, etc, which should be considered normal. Some of the pigment has been worn with time, but it stills shows quite strong. This is a bea

Height: 52 cm. ed African mask from Igbo. Nigeria. Hand carved from a single piece of wood. With color pigments. Height: 64 cm. Living mainly in the forested areas of south-west Nigeria. On both sides of the Niger River the Igbo number some ten million individuals. Mainly farmers and merchants, they also hunt and fish. They are subdivided into thirty-three subgroups and are spread out among about two hundred villages scattered through the thick forest or semifertile marshland. Only on the northern and western edges of the area, under influence from Igala and Benin, are hereditary rulers found. The heads of families form the council of elders, which shares its power with numerous ... moresecret societies. These societies exercise great political and social influence. They are highly hierarchical, their members passing from one level to the next. There is strong social pressure toward individual distinction, and men can move upward through successive grades by demonstrating their achievements and their generosity. The lack of overall centralization among the Igbo-speaking peoples has been conducive to the development of a great variety of art styles and cultural practices. The earliest sculpture known from Igboland is from the village of Ibo Ukwu. Where the grave of a man of distinction and a ritual store, dating from the 9th century AD, contained both chased copper objects and elaborate castings of leaded bronze. Ibo sculpture is subject to rather strict rules: the figures are generally frontal, symmetrical, and upright, with legs slightly spread, arms held away from the body, and hands stretched forward, palms open. Dogon Mask with Carved Figure on Top Mali African SALE Was $99
Title, Dogon Mask with Carved Figure on Top Mali African, Type of Object, Mask, Country of Origin, Mali, People, Dogon, Materials, Wood. Paint, Approximate Age, 20th Century Dimensions, Height is 25 inches. Overall Condition, Fair to good, Damage/Repair, broken arm of figure. Chips, shallow cracks, Additional Information: A mask from Dogon with its stylized human face surmounted by a standing female figure. This figure has its arms upraised in Tellem style(one arm is missing here) It represents an important ancestor. The oral tradition of the Dogon tells us that they originated on the west bank of the Niger River about 1000 years ago. They moved west at some point. Into parts of what is now Mossi territory in Burkina Faso, but chose to return east due to pressure to assimilate into the Mossi Kingdom. This time, around 1500, they found a place ... morealmost unreachable by invaders on horseback-the arid but imposing Bandiagara Cliffs. Here most of the Dogon have remained to this day, as one of Africa's most spiritual people. Dogon family dwellings, as well as their shrines and granaries, are constructed in a uniquely haunting way, leaving even the most jaded observer spellbound, in what can only be described as a"magic kingdom. The Dogon have taken the time-honored worship of ancestors to new heights, and their huge pantheon of astounding and colorful carvings reflect this. It is possible today for tourists and scholars to arrange masked dances for public view, but these dances are for entertainment only, and only a few of the art-forms are actually revealed. Ritually meaningful ceremonies are not shared with the public. The Dogon have even made their funerals a unique spectacle. Accompanied by the chanting of Binu priests, the body is reportedly lowered over the jagged cliffs into its final resting place, as dancers venerate the life of the deceased. Quite a way to enter the heavens! The important PBS series"Africa" did a beautiful segment on the Dogon and Fulani. Recommended Reading: Laude's AFRIC

Masks are owned by families and used by individual lineage members in contexts of social control. Boy’s circumcision camps, and entertainment. Most We masks were created to frighten with the gaping jaws and tubular eyes. The style of these forest living people differ from the sophisticated, gentle and often refined art of the neighboring savanna-dwellers. We people produce a variety of masks often characterized by enlarged triangular nose, an open mouth and tubular eyes. Modern ethnology puts the Wobe and Guere together under the name We. Also called Bamana, form the largest ethnic group within Mali and occupy the central part of the country, in an area of savannah. They live principally from agriculture, with some subsidiary cattle rearing in the northern part of their territory. The Bambara people are predominantly animists, although recently the Muslim faith has been spreading among them. The Bambara kingdom was founded in the 17th century and reached its pinnacle between 176o, and 1787 during the reign of N'golo Diarra.
