NEW! Description: Catalogue.

WONDERFUL CARVED WOODEN AFRICAN SCULPTURE EARLY TO MID 20TH CENTURY EXCELLENT CONDITION NO RESERVE About 13" x 6 1/2" DESCRIPTION Baoule(Baule) ceremonial axe or hatchet. Human form. With the wrought iron blade protruding from a man's mouth. Three-dimensional lizard crawls along the handle. The Baoulé(or Baule) are an Akan people and one of the largest groups in the Ivory Coast. The Baoulé are farmers who live in the eastern side of Côte dIvoire. The Baoule people are represented by religion. Art, festivals, and equal society. There are more than sixty-five different Akan-speaking ethnic groups living in Cote d'Ivoire. They live essentially in the middle of the Cote d'Ivoire between the Comoé ... moreRiver and the Bandama River. They played a role during 20th century history. Legend goes that in the 17th century the Baoulé left present day Ghana and traveled west into present day Côte dIvoire under the lead of the Queen Pokou. According to oral tradition, the Baoulé were forced to leave Ghana when the Ashanti rose to power. While they were fleeing for their lives they came to a large river that they were unable to cross. With their enemies chasing them they began to throw their most prized possessions into the river. It came to the Queen's attention that their most valuable possession was her son. The Queen realized that she had to sacrifice her son to the river and threw him in. Upon doing so hippopotamuses rose from the river and allowed them to cross, saving their lives. After crossing, the Queen was so upset about losing her son that all she could say was"baouli, meaning: the child is dead. From that point on they were known as the Baoulé. Iv. Coast: Old & very nice Tribal used African Baoule figure.
Old and very nice Tribal used African Baoule figure. Iv. Coast. Hand carved from a single piece of wood. Height: 21 cm and collected in 1960 till 1974 The Baoule. Estimated to number I million at the beginning of the a century, form part of the Akan group of the Iv. Coast. They occupy a part of the eastern Iv. Coast that is both forest and savanna land. The Akan created a series of kingdoms and city-states that progressively occupied the entire forest region all the way to the Gulf of Guinea. During the eighteenth century, the queen, Abla Poku, had to lead her people west to the shores of the Cornoe, the land of the Senufo. In order to cross the river. She sacrificed her own son. This sacrifice was the origin of the name Baoule, for baouli-ineans"the child has died. I. N. Loucou, 1984) Since the regime was rnatrilinear, at the queen's ... moredeath her niece succeeded her and ruled over the kingdom of Sakassou, which brought together the tribes that had followed the queen in her exodus. Yet. As the political system was a decentralized one, the relations of Sakassou were limited to the payment of tributes, to appealjudgments, and to matters of religion. The effective authority of the queen did not reach beyond the village in which she resided and her role was nothing more than one of prestige. ANTIQUE BAOULE MASK FROM IVORY COAST AFRICA
ANTIQUE BAOULE MASK FROM IVORY COAST AFRICA Up for auction a monochrome wood mask- wall art of Baoule people from Ivory Coast. Africa. This mask with a beautiful age patina and very detailed realistic carving, looks to be from early 20 th century. The Baoulé(or Baule) are an Akan people and one of the largest groups in the Ivory Coast. The Baoulé are farmers who live in the eastern side of Côte d'Ivoire(Ivory Coast) The Baoule people are represented by religion. Art, festivals, and equal society. There are more than sixty-five different Akan-speaking ethnic groups living in Cote d'Ivoire. They live essentially in the middle of the Cote d'Ivoire between the Comoé River and the Bandama River. Legend goes that in the 17th century the Baoulé left present day Ghana and traveled west into present day Côte ... mored'Ivoire under the lead of the Queen Pokou. According to oral tradition. The Baoulé were forced to leave Ghana when the Ashanti rose to power. Dimensions: Height: 15 in; Width 7 in; Depth: 4 1/2 in Condition: With a crack in the interior no affecting the front face. Beside this in overall good condition. Please check the pictures.

Carved Wooden Statue of Seated Fertility God-Ghana-Baoule or Dogon Cote d'Ivoire
This is an original vintage carved statue of a what appears to be a fertility God. It was hand-crafted in Ghana and is approximately 23" x 7" x 11" in depth. The imagery on this statue appears to be perhaps a Baoule Fertility God and the rounded beard without other facial hair is reminiscent of some Dogon statues from the Ivory Coast. My notes only indicate this came from Ghana so any other expertise/suggestions available here on EBAY would be gratefully appreciated. Condition is very fine although there is natural wear and tear as this is a tribal artifact with some obvious use. There is a crack along the right side of the statue from the seat of the chair to the man's waist. Also. There is a crack on the face(see close up photo) Other small cracks as well. This item is from a small private collection of primarily African ... moretribal collectibles/art(also includes a few North West/Canadian/Eskimo/Asian pieces/US Art Work-paintings and lithographs) Most of the African material was collected in the 1970s and represents varies tribes from the Cameroon. Zimbabwe, Ghana, Burkino Faso and others.

NEW HANDMADE Brass Baoule Couple Sculptures
SquareTrade © AP6.0 These handsome sculptures represents the dolls that Baoule girls are given to enable them to bear round faced children in the future. A round face is considered a sign of beauty to this people group. Which even gently rubs the still developing heads of newborns to encourage this. You receive both a male and a female figure. They are quite stylized and primitive. The brass has been purposely allowed to"age. They would be equally right in a museum or your home. Retail value is at least $76.00. Really arresting pieces! Each glorious sculpture has been created using the"lost wax" method. It is an extremely labor intensive process. A wax mold is formed by hand. Over an open fire, until exact. Reeds, as tubes, are fixed to the top. The wax is then dipped into fine powdered mud several times with hardening ... morein between applications. This forms a clay casting around the mold. Next, the clay is heated until the wax melts and pours out. Using the tubes, molten brass is poured into the space left in the clay form by the wax. When it has cooled, the clay is broken away. Any finishing details necessary are then done by hand. For other unique pieces from Africa and beyond, please browse our other store listings! As these pieces are hand made in primitive fashion. Variations and"birthmarks" will occur from time to time. This merely adds to the authenticity of the art! Pictures are representative of a basic theme; each work is unique. Baoule Wood Mouse Oracle Pot Africa Ivory Coast
Baoule Wood Figural Mouse Oracle Divination Pot-AFRICA A fine Baoule wood vessel used for mouse oracle. Or divination. This lidded vessel would often accompany the diviner when he traveled so that clients could consult him. For divination. Tribal Art Vintage West African Wood Carved Baoule Mask - Animal Spirit 3
Vintage African wood carved animal spirit mask Size 56cm*22cm(22 inch* 9 inch) The great majority of African masks are associated not with certain living persons but. Directly or indirectly, with supernatural beings or spirits. The performance of masked figures is generally thought to represent the visit of spirits from the beyond among men in the here and now. Very often, spirits of nature is used, which"includes spirits of wildlife and the bush, lords of the animal kingdom or of individual species, earth, tree, river, mountain, rain, and storm spirits, we well as spirits that cause fertility or illness. Why a certain supernatural presence should be associated with one mask instead of another is seldom traceable. Naturellement. Les deux visages ne sont pas identiques. Tiny boxes, and brass spoons for the gold dust. Akan. Or Asante weights were calibrated and would correspond to a certain weight of the gold dust or gold metal that was being weighed. Calibration was possible in this case by the insertion of copper insets in the holes of the weight, ... morethese are not decorative but are rather intentional in order to adjust the ponderal value of the gold being weighed. Please be patient there are 15 photos to be loaded in this auction. In this auction we have an Antique African tribal mask from the Baule(Baoule.Bawule) ... moreThe Baule people is one of the largest ethnic groups in the Côte d'Ivoire. This mask has horns and a round, semi-serrated edge. This has the back carved out for use. The small teardrop eyes have a bulging element at the top. The mount is small with jagged teeth. We are calling this shabby chic due to some collected bumps and dings and a repair to the horns. There appears to be a gap in the horns what would accept a wrap of some kind. This measures approx. 16 1/4" x 12" Good Luck! BAULE(BAOULE. BAWULE) Côte d'Ivoire The Baule people is one of the largest ethnic group in the Côte d'Ivoire. They have played a central role in twentieth-century history of the country. They waged the longest war of resistance to French colonization of any West African people. And maintained their traditional objects and beliefs longer than many groups in such constant contact with European administrators, traders, and missionaries. The Baule belong to the Akan peoples who inhabit Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. According to a legend, during the eighteenth century, the queen, Abla Poku, had to lead her people west to the shores of the Com
