KUBA AFRICAN ART SHOOWA CLOTH #1979 - For African Art Gallery
KUBA SHOOWA TEXTILE#1979 Tribe: Kuba- Shoowa. Country: Democratic Republic of Congo. Material: Raffia Palm. Size: 27" 68.6 cm) x 18.5" 47 cm) Item: 1979 Condition: Good. Note: Ex. James E. Adkins Collection- Florida. USA. The basic material used in weaving panels of Kuba fabric is the fibre of the raffia palm(raphia vinifera) Which grows throughout the region. The outer layer of the young, plumelike leaves is split(frayed) and the fibres drawn. They may need to be twisted together and beaten to provide the threads used in the textiles. Weaving is the exclusive preserve of men, who work sitting at sloping looms. The finer the fibre, the stronger and tighter the woven fabric will be. The size of the woven panels is determined by the natural length of the raffia fibre; the individual fibres are not artificially lengthened. Hence. Panels ... moreusually measure between about 50 x 60 cm and a maximum of 100 x 100 cm. The cloths are soaked. Kneaded and beaten to make them soft and supple. The basic reddish tone of the velvet is obtained by dyeing the untreated fabric using a powder made from red wood. Yellow ochre background colours are more common, however. The cloths are embroidered by women. The technique of cut-pile embroidery consists of passing threads between the warp and weft threads with a needle. Without any visible stitches or knots. The threads are then cut to leave a pile of about 2mm on either side, with the velvet fibres are secured in the middle only by the tightness of the underlying weave. The Shoowa are real masters of this technique, which demands a great deal of skill. An enormous amount of work is involved in making a raffia cut-pile panel. It is a process that can take between several months and more than a year. So it is not surprising that cut-pile"velvet" cloths are treasured as objects of value. For embroidery incorporating more than one colour(a technique found almost exclusively among the Shoowa) The raffia fibres are coloured with plant dyes before embroidering. The roots of tr

The Kuba Kingdom reached its apex during the mid 19th century. Europeans first reached the area in 1884. Because of the kingdom's relative isolation. AFRICAN KUBA TEXTILE CLOTH RAFFIA from the Congo 144"x 22"
AFRICAN KUBA CLOTH RAFFIA from the Congo Size: 144 INCHES X 22 INCHES The Kuba cloth is made using the leaf of the raffia tree. The Kuba people of the Congo first hand cut, and then weave the strips of leaf to make pieces of fabric, often called raffia cloth. There are several different sub groups of the Kuba people. Each group has different and unique ways to make the fabric. Some make it thicker, longer, shorter, or with different patches. Each patch is symbolic and many times a piece has many different meanings. When Kuba cloth originated there were probably no patches used, but as the cloth is brittle it is quite likely that the patches were used to repair the frequent tears. Later each patch developed a meaning, many patterns are uniquely arranged to tell a story. 36

Antique African Tribal Skirt - Kuba Cloth OverSkirt – Hand Woven – Zaire
The Kuba people of Zaire weave a wide variety of cloth made from rafia. A natural fiber from palm leaves. The material is stripped into very fine threads, soaked and pounded to make them flexible, and dyed in vegetal or mineral pigments to create a variety of colors. The Kuba employ a variety of weaving and decoration techniques. This overskirt uses both cut pile and false embroidery to achieve the desired geometric designs, This garment is called an overskirt. It is woven of natural rafia fiber. And is believed to date from before 1960. I bought it from a large collection of garments collected by a woman who lived and traveled through Africa 30 to 50 years ago. Dimensions are about 13 inches wide and 36 inches long. The designs in this center panel are cut pile accented with false embroidery. The border pieces. Which utilize only false embroidery ... morein different colors to create the design, were made from separate pieces. These were then attached by hand using rafia thread. Overall condition is Very Good. With a few loose seams as can be seen in the photos, as well as some light soil and staining from natural dyes. All of the outermost rafia cord is present and attached. There are no noticeable holes. This would make a fantastic display piece for the serious African Artifact Collector. Materials: RAFFIA. NATURAL DYE. Approximate Age: 30+ years. Dimensions: 20" x 16" Weight: 7 ounces. Overall Condition: Used. EXCELLENT. Additional Information: Kuba cloth is the embroidered and appliquéd fabric of the Kuba people from DR of Congo and is amongst the best-known textile of the ancient African tradition of raffia cloth weaving. Its geometric art forms have been the source of inspiration for artists such as Picasso. Klee and Matisse who respectively owned extensive collections. Kuba textile art is created from single panels of cloth embroidered with dyed raffia thread and is cut to create a plush pile cloth. These panels are ... morenot worn but displayed, and serve as currency and markers of prestige. This is one such prestige panel. Like almost all so-called Kasai"velvets" the overall composition is asymmetrical and irregular and no two panels are identical. We grade the panels in two qualitative categories: 1) A looser. Flatter“Chacho” Raffia cloth(panel flat-weave and cut-pile embroidery, natural dyes) and 2) the“Butala” Premium Quality Raffia cloth which is thicker and more plush(panel flat-weave and cut-pile embroidery, natural dyes) Composed of a series of interlocking knotted designs in tan and black. The visual complexity and geometrical structure make these fabrics a favorite. The variation of compositions are staggering! In Kuba culture, the cloth also forms an important part of funeral rites. High quality, specific patterned raffia dress is key to being recognized by clan ancestors. These designs are handed down from generation to generation and it is the strength of this tradition that has kept the skills of making Kuba cloth alive. SquareTrade © AP6.0 New Handmade Authentic African Kuba Cloth Velvet or Embroidery approximate average 20 x 24 inches Kuba cloth is an amazing creation of the Kuba or Bakuba peoples of Africa. It is one of the very few fabrics which is still completely made by hand and of natural materials! The Kuba people love design and ornamentation. And decorate even everyday objects with fantastic patterns. Their cloth is perhaps their crowning achievement. Kuba cloth is a true labor of love. It is woven from raffia strands which are collected and prepared usually by men or boys. It is also the males who weave the fibers into a basic fabric called"mbal. Since the raffia fibers are not connected to lengthen them. The base cloth is never very large or long, though individual pieces, once woven, may be connected. Before the decorating, women dampen ... moreand beat the cloth repeatedly until it reaches the correct firmness or softness. If the mbal needs to be dyed. It is. Dyes come from Tukula wood, clay, iron dross, indigo, and other plants. Then women begin the patterns. They may applique shapes cut from other cloths to form larger patterns. They may be embroidered with dyed raffia threads. Sections may be combined to form a patchwork look. Or any of these methods may be combined with the others. These are all usually found on the longer pieces termed skirts. The smaller pieces termed velvets are created by a combination of embroidery and a cut pile technique. Some designs are stitched onto the cloth. But for fill. An artist will pull several strands through the base cloth with a needle, then cut them, creating a natural pile with a knife. The fibers are not tied, but simply held in place by the tightness of the weave of the base cloth. The back of the piece usually bears no signs of the embroidery. What may be the most amazing fact of all. Is that the artist never sketches her designs ahead of time! She works from images in her mind, many times patterns that have been passed down for generations. They also usually have nam

KUBA AFRICAN ART SHOOWA CLOTH #2274 - For African Art Gallery
KUBA SHOOWA TEXTILE#2274 Tribe: Kuba- Shoowa. Country: Democratic Republic of Congo. Material: Raffia Palm. Size: 23.5" 59.7 cm) x 19.5" 49.5cm) Item: 2274 Condition: Good. Provenance: James E. Adkins Estate Collection(Florida. USA) The basic material used in weaving panels of Kuba fabric is the fibre of the raffia palm(raphia vinifera) Which grows throughout the region. The size of the woven panels is determined by the natural length of the raffia fibre; the individual fibres are not artificially lengthened. ... moreHence. Panels usually measure between about 50 x 60 cm and a maximum of 100 x 100 cm. The
