This elongated bronze alloy canoe depicts figures relating to the story of the Dogon genesis in African tribal art. It illustrates the story of the mythical ... moreDogon ark led by Nommo and sent by the creator god Amma to populate and reorganize the earth. The crocodile-shaped creature that forms the bowand stern represents ayo geu , a crocodile that killed Nommo. The seven figures seated in the boat are the original Dogon ancestors, who are frequently found on other sculpted works of African Dogon art, such as attic doors. The sides are decorated with motifs depicting snakes, another element of the bestiary linked to mythology. The Dogon are a people renowned for their cosmogony, their esotericism, their myths and legends.

For protection. Until about 300 years ago the Dogon built their villages near or in the famous Bandiagara cliffs. They have thusly been nicknamed the Hill, Cliff and Mountain people. Dogon art manifests in masks, architectural objects, statues and vessels. The Dogon realize that they are not the first inhabitants ... moreof the land that they now occupy. Their myths, legends, traditions and art retain the memories of their predecessors. The Dogon people of Mali are known the world over for their creation of Dogon Doors. The doors have various uses in their society; first as the physical closure to their granaries. Secondly they are created and exchanged as gifts for birthdays. Marriages, tokens of luck and rites of passage bequests. Thirdly, when used as a part of the architecture, as a door or shutter, in a private abode, through the use of symbols they are used to describe the occupation of the person or that persons persona or status in the village. Lastly it served as a sign to taxpayers, letting them know which form of payment was accepted in the adjoining building. The symbolic styling of the doors can vary. AuthenticAfrica.com

Dogon Granary Door, Mali, African Tribal Creations, art, nommo, ancestor, Dogo
An African Tribal Creations gallery NO RESERVE AUCTION 0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false Despite loads of beautiful sculpture. The Dogon people of Mali continue to be most famous for their elegantly carved doors, some of which can be truly spectacular in size and detail. The Dogon live in an arid region near the Niger river, backed by huge cliffs, a spot chosen for defensive reasons due to the regional tension created by their refusal to convert to Islam. Due to this relative isolation, they have been able to maintain their artistic traditions over the years despite the pressures of encroaching Islamic culture. At nearly half a million people, the Dogon were once primarily hunters, but have taken up agriculture over time to support their growing numbers. Millet and other crops are painstakingly raised on their arid fields and stored ... morein granaries generally connected to or very proximal to their homes. An incredibly artistic people, many functional objects around their homes are embellished in fantastic fashion, the most famous of which, are their incredible doors. There are two common door types used by the Dogon. That for their home itself, and that for their granary, the grain storage structure wherein their food stores are kept. The symbolic figures adorning it can be ancestors, supernatural beings, even breasts(a symbol of fertility) and are generally intended to keep the entrance sealed from intruders, thieves, and animal pests. This granary sized door is beautifully carved to feature numerous protective ancestral figures, as well as several dimensional geometric shapes. As is commonly the case, it is heavy for its size and sturdily constructed. The piece is in good overall condition, having only minor age-related cracking, and markings, which should be considered normal. It is otherwise free from serious breaks or repairs. The hinges seem to have minimal wear due to the fact that glass bottles are often cemented into the wall construction and used as a point of articulation for the door hinges. Th

ANTIQUE ETHNOGRAPHIC AND SCULPTURAL DOOR LOCK FROM DOGON PEOPLES AFRICA * LARGE
FOR SALE IS ONE ANTIQUE DOOR LOCK FROM THE DOGON PEOPLES OF WEST AFRICA. IT WAS USED TO SECURE A DWELLING OR A GRANARY DOOR. THIS DOOR LOCK IS AUTHENTIC AND HEAVILY PATINA-ED. IT ORIGINALLY HAD MOVABLE WOODEN PINS THAT DROPPED INTO PLACE TO HOLD THE LOCK. I BELIEVE THAT THE KEY RESEMBLED A WOODEN TOOTH BRUSH. THE TWO CROSS PIECES ARE FINELY ADORNED WITH AN INCISED GEOMETRIC PATTERN. THE STYLIZED FIGURE AT THE TOP LIKELY SYMBOLIZES THE GUARDIAN FIGURE OF THE GRANARY WHERE THE FAMILY CROP OF MILLET WAS STORED- THE STAPLE CROP OF THE DOGON. THIS FIGURE DID DOUBLE DUTY IN THAT IT ALSO ENSURED THAT THE CROP WOULD ALSO BE FRUITFUL. OR IT FUNCTIONED IN THE SAME WAY TO PROTECT THE DWELLING AND ENSURE FERTILITY. IT IS AN OBJECT THAT WAS AESTHETICALLY PLEASING YET PRACTICAL. THIS LARGE PIECE MEASURES 13 1/2" ACROSS AND 16" TOP TO BOTTOM. ... moreINSURED DOMESTIC SHIPPING IS INCLUDED IN THE SALE PRICE.

We did not plan on having to downsize and sell most our art, so we DON'T have much INFO if any on these. I will list them as where I BELIEVE they came from but IT IS ONLY MY OPINION. Again, they are very nice pieces. This one we believe came from ... moreD R Congo. Please bid on them for the beauty in the art and how well it is carved! Wooden Dogon Granary Door from Mali-Intact Lock w Latch
I am slowly downsizing a large collection of artifacts acquired through many years of travel and a fascination with tribal cultures. Have decided that I can't keep going to auctions( which I love to do) unless I first pass on a few items to someone else! This delightful Dogon door has been recently taken off the wall to make way for a new piece of art. Have owned it since 1974 but cannot determine its exact age. I would conservatively say'mid 20th century' but it could very well be older. Constructed of 3 carved hardwood panels held together by strips of the same wood at the top and bottom and very large staple like flat iron nails. Measures 27" 69 cm. x 19" 48 cm. The latch-a significant feature of Dogon granary doors- is intact. Has a very appealing dark reddish patina. Bears all the stylistic markings of Dogon doors ... morethat some say were traditionally made by fathers to accompany their daughters as they moved from puberty into adulthood. Hence. The female'breasts' represented along the right hand side. Others have told me that they had a less ritualistic function and were simply carved to protect the window like opening into each family's grain storage. Primordial beings, ancestor figures, sun lizards and scenes of daily life symbolically serving to protect the entrance. For example, t he zig zag elements along the vertical sides are said to represent the Dogon serpent ancestor. Whatever their anthropological origins. Dogon granary doors are an excellent example of why traditional African artifacts are as interesting to artists as they are to collectors and students of history. There is an inherent modernism to them that is stylistically appealing. I know, because I had this one on my wall for many years and it generated many, many comments. Please note that this door is not light. Hence the shipping charge of $22.00 which applies to Continental North America only! I will ship worldwide but if bidding from overseas and you are concerned about prohibitive shipping costs please mes

Mali: Rare nice old Tribal used African Dogon Granary Door.
Mali: Rare and old Tribal used African Dogon Door. Height: 30 cm x 25 cm. The Dogon inhabit the large austere Bandiagara plateau. With most of the villages situated on cliffs to the north and the east. At first hunters, they now cultivate their staple diet millet. And also sorghum, and wheat on the cliff tops, which they have had to convert due to the scarcity of water sources. The Dogon are among African cultures that have remained closest to their ancestral traditions. One such tradition is building granaries and houses for grain storage. Doors of these granaries are often adorned with impressive carvings of animals or people which serve as invocations of deities or spirits. Or as symbols of status. The stored grain is considered"safe" when it is guarded by the ancestors whose images are depicted on granary doors.

Dogon figurative granary "ta koguru" door lock figure Mali - no reserve
Very nice Dogon granary door lock(called to koguru) with a couple of nommo figures. These symbolize strong magical and spiritual forces. Carved from VERY hard and dense wood- in addition to the two figures is a criss cross design. The patina is aged and attractive. The transverse has been broken and glued on the underside of the right side facing. This is a great door lock with wonderful a patina. The push out latch is intact and functions well. The photos seem to represent it nicely.great condition, nice natural luster, no damage. This is an older Dogon people door. Mali, African that was acquired by an artist collector sometime between the mid 1950's and early 1990's. Burkina Faso: Large Tribal used African Dogon door 46 cm
Burkina Faso: Large Tribal used African Dogon door. Height: 46 cm x 33 cm. AFRICA- GALLERY DOGON(DOGO. DOGOM, HABBE, HABE, KADO, KADDO, KIBISI, TOMBO) Mali. Burkina Faso The 400.000 Dogon live 180 miles south of Timbuktu on the cliffs of Bandiagara, which dominate the plains for over 150 miles. They speak approximately 120 dialects, many of which are not mutually comprehensible. At first hunters, now on their small fields they cultivate millet, sorghum, wheat, and onion. The millet is stored in high quadrangular granaries around which they build their houses. Because of the difficult approach to these regions and the aridity of the climate, the Dogon have been isolated and hence were able to conserve their ancient religious habits and ways of making the necessary implements, their carvings. Dogon social and religious organizations are closely ... moreinterlinked and out of this arose principal cults. Which accounts for the richness and diversity of Dogon culture and art. The clans are subdivided onto lineages, overseen by the patriarch, guardian of the clan’s ancestral shrine and officiant at the totemic animal cult. Beside this hierarchical system of consanguinity, male and female associations are entrusted with the initiations that take place by age group. Corresponding to groups of newly circumcised or excised boys or girls. The Dogon believe these operations remove the female element from males and vice versa. Circumcision thus creates a wholly male or female person prepared to assume an adult role. The members of an age group owe one another assistance until the day they die. Initiation of boys begins after their circumcision, with the teaching of the myths annotated by drawings and paintings. The young boys will learn the place of humans in nature, society, and the universe. In the Dogon pantheon Amma appears as the original creator of all the forces of the universe and of his descendant Lebe. The god of plant rebirth. Thefirst Dogon primordial ancestors. Called Nommo, were bisexual water gods. They were created

Antique Bamana door lock, Mali, Dogon type 20 x 18 inch
This is similar to the more commonly seen Dogon locks but it bears a typically Bamana face. Very sharply carved at the top end of the vertical. This is a rather exceptional piece for the reason that it shows real wear on both the fixed member and the slide(with metal plate) It is a one-pin lock and, as is usual, without the key. The carving is good and clear with cross-hatch design on the body. Excellent patina. 20 inches high with an 18 inch slide(latch)

Dogon granary door, African tribal art depictions of Nommo and Kanaga masks
A vintage/antique DOGON Granary door. A traditional granary door from the central plateau of Mali. Some background. That after researching revealed some fascinating aspects behind this piece of important tribal art. The Dogon migrated into the depths of the Bandiagara escarpment escaping Islam and the slave traders that predated upon them. There exist about 500,000 individuals on the 100 mile long sandstone cliffs. They are known for extraordinary astrological knowledge. Which some have put forward could only come from extra-terrestrials. They celebrate the 60 year orbit of Sirius by'Sirius B' the problem being; is how could they know about a white dwarf that is invisible to the eye and only relatively recently discovered by modern astronomers. It seems that they have also predicted the presence of a Sirius C, which at the moment ... morehas not been definitively discovered but there is some evidence it may exist. There is a mass of further information and anthropological research available on this area. Including a BBC documentary by Griff Rhys Jones, on Dogon carvings. Significantly. My interpretation of the carvings on this door are: The two characters in the middle bottom half are the Nummo twins. The key spiritual figures linked with the origins of the Dogon and the sun lizards either side are one of the ways the Nummo can often be seen depicted. In the top half of the panel are twins with the Kanaga masks fused and on the right a single individual wearing a Kanaga mask. The mask with points aligned both vertical downwards and upwards represent man as the axis of the world with the points illustrating the earth and the sky respectively. On the right are two breasts. Or they could be the two Sirius stars. Dogon huts tended to be either owned by the Man- for granary use, the woman would have her own hut(with door) where she would keep her possesions. The central star shape could be Sirius. One of the focal points of Dogon culture. It has been hugely educative and rewarding learning about this door. The above i
