Tabwa masks are rare and little is known concerning their use and functions. The literature points out three types of masks among the Tabwa. The first category is represented by the anthropomorphic wooden helmet mask like this with headdress nicely decorated with diamond and other patterns. Scarification patterns around hairstyle line, in temples, and in cheeks. This category represents the female ancestor(Musangwe) symbolizing fertility. The name Musangwe is related to sexual promiscuity. Our mask falls into this category. Unusual Luba/ tabwa stool w/ kneeling figure 10x 6 1/4"
Unusual stool probably made by the Luba people of Africa. The hairdo is similar to that used by the Tabwa people. The kneeling male figure has an elongated head and hands supporting his chin. The face is very naturalistic and gives the impression of someone in deep thought. The seat of the stool itself is supported on the figure's back rather than the arms as is most common. I did however buy it from the guy living in Burundi(god bless his sole) and he shipped it to me in came in a hand-made wooden crate made for the sole purpose of arriving to me safely. This mask is from my personal collection(purchased about 8 years ago) It is LARGE. A 11 inch diameter across the base. 7 inches of upward carving inside the mask. And about another 11 inches tall. Go get a tape measure, draw those dimensions out. Picture it. made of wood now. sitting in front of you. Several"bolt holes" around the rim of the base. I swore these were used to adhere the mask to a leather shoulder strap and wear this in some"battle" But given the original description/ad i think i may have day-dreamed and come up with an alternative folklore. ... morePlease assume the original description to be accurate(see below) Three notable cracks. Elizabeth Bennett. Additional Information: Tabwa face masks like this are very rare to found. Anthropomorphic and zoomorphic wooden helmet masks are the most common in western Collections. They dance in pair the male and the female. The female is called Musangwe and represent a female ancestor. Symbol of fertility. The male, Kiyunde, is represented by a buffalo mask. In this case, our mask could be identified with Musangwe, female mask. During the performances, Musangwe and Kiyunde dance together. There is no indication that these two masks represent the primordial or mythical couple. Another well-known Tabwa mask is made of glass beads stitched onto raffia cloth. All these masks are involved in ritual dances linked to the fertility ritual. The Tabwa carved wooden figures to represent ancestors. Great shamanistic healers and earth spirits called mipasi or mikisi. Such figures were kept by lineage elders in special buildings within their components, where the elders sometimes slept to receive ancestral inspiration in their dreams. Wooden, hand carved, African Statue from the Tabwa/Hemba tribe the occupies the Republic of Congo and Zambia. This statue is of a man standing with his eyes closed. His one hand is on his bulging belly, and the other hand is holding a small statue on his knee. There are many details from top to bottom in this piece. This piece shows some signs of age with a missing forearm. The base has a crack, and there are some cracks throughout the solid wood piece. This is definitely what we call shabby chic, however we feel this only adds to the character and history of this piece! It measures approx. 20" x 5 1/4" x 6" Good Luck! Figures of this type were used by diviners who would place various items in the bowl and then shake the figure and analyze the position of the different objects contained in the bowl. The face and neck and torso are incised with rectangles and twinned isosceles triangles. The extended and deeply incised coiffure ends at the base of the spine. This huge and heavy mask was carved from a single piece of wood and was worn horizontlly on the head. Numbering more than 200. 000 the Tabwa were noted as early as the 19th century and today live along Lake Tanganyika. Kiyunde mask portrays a male wild buffalo and appears wearing a costume composed of animal skins and grasses. It dances with a companion mask depicting a female. The Tabwa identify wild buffalo with their strength and behavior with chiefs and their culture heroes. The name buffalo is also given to the circumcised boys. Tacks worked onto the face of the mask in elaborate and attractive scarification patterns and designs represent the Tabwa concept of âkulembaâ that reflect aesthetics, social membership and the abstract idea of order upon the chaos of nature. The Tabwa are a tiny tribe in the Upper River Region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Formerly Zaire. Their carvings are ancestor figures, and they usually stand on a circular base with slightly bent knees and hands resting on their abdomen. Sometimes the hairstyle is a George Washington queue. On this figure the like on this example the coiffure is a cap like with geometric motifs. The Tabwa number more than 200. 000. Tabwa art has only recently come to be identified as a separate style often confused with the sculpture of their neighbors or others who took Tabwa identity. Chiefs were not powerful and local lineage heads exercised much authority. It was the lineage heads who kept small figures representing honored ancestors known as Mipasi on small shrines that they controlled. RARE Tabwa Gourd Stopper
Prestige gourd stopper. Tabwa People, c. 1940 ~ 1950 wood. 16.5" The Tabwa occupy the south-western shores of Lake Tanganyika and the general area of south-eastern Congo and north-eastern Zambia; they speak a language related to the neighboring Bemba and Luba. They formerly subsisted off of hunting and black-smithing. Traditionally, authority rested with a tribal/clan chief who inherited his position matillinealy and almost all'art' was produced to venerate ancestors. Ancestral figures were depicted in various ways and ceremonially displayed, representing a chief's familial lines. This piece is unusually large. Many gourd stoppers are half this size. A leopard often depicts'royal status' throughout much of the Congo and the male figure may represent an ancestor or perhaps a pygmy, people of the bush who are linked ... morewith sorcery. The gourd itself would probably have held liquids or materials of'power' to be used ritually by a chief or person of importance. The piece has a wonderful patina. Warm and soft to the touch. There is one repair, to the back half of the leopard's tail, but otherwise it is in very good condition.
