BACKGROUND The Suku people have lived in the South-Western part of the Democratic Republic of Congo– Formerly Zaire– since the 16th century. With the arrival of the Yaka and the Lunda in their territory. They were split into two autonomous groups. Their main economic resource is farming, but occasionally communal hunts are organized. Stylistically, their sculptures are characterized by an enlarged head with an almond-shaped mouth, a triangular nose and coffee-bean eyes, all set under elaborate coiffure. The Suku carved figures which were used during fertility ceremonies. Painter Fred Uhlman words- Most of the artists I admired. The mask was ostensibly used during the circumcision of young boys or other rites of passage. On the forehead protrudes a carved V. There are no openings in the down turned eyes. The nose has only one nostril on the left. The mouth is also closed. This sale consists of 5 different masks. There are masks from the Songye(possibly 2) Lulua and Hemba ethnic groups plus one mystery mask. Here is the break-down on age and condition. The Red-eyed Lulua Mask measures 12.15 inches in length x 8 inches wide. It has a chip missing from its left ear and several age cracks grace the surface of the piece. There are remnants of 40+ year old insect damage. Mask is solid. Heavy, dust and critter free. It is approximately 30 to 50 years old and is may have been used ceremonially. It is the correct size for ceremonial use, and shows signs of extensive wear and handling. The Hemba Mask with Rafia Beard measures approximately 9 inches in length x 8.75 inches wide. This is a very peaceful looking mask. Filled with charisma, which creates its own presence where-ever it hangs. It is approximately 25 to 30 ... moreyears old and was made in S.E. Zaire, about 150 KM west of Lake Tanganyka. The Rafia beard was obviously replaced subsequent to the creation of the mask. The Old Songye Passport Mask with Striated Face measures 10.5 inches in length x 4.4 inches wide. This is a sweet little mask with an awesome presence. It shows signs of extensive wear and handling. This precious piece is at least 35 to 40 years old and has a life of its own. The Passport Primate Fetish Mask I also believe to be Songye- but please correct me if you know differently. It measures 9.85 inches in length x 4.25 inches wide. During transport. A vertical strip broke away from the right side of the mask and had to be re-glued. Hanging on the wall, this is not a noticeable defect but it is evident while being handled. This small fetish mask is made from a rather light wood and is approximately 25 to 30 years old. This is a beautiful Lulua mask. The Lulua is a relatively large tribe from the Kasai region in Central DRC. The Lulua. Which is associated to the Kasai Luba cluster, is in fact made of a grouping of chiefdoms– and their sculpture integrates elements from a number of neighboring tribes– including the Luba, Tshokwe and Kete. Most distinctive among Lulua sculptures are the very finely figures, typically serving for protection(whether during combat, mother and child figures or general well being) Masks are very rare– and were used during circumcision rites and at funerals of nobles. The piece here is made of hard wood; it shows a heart-shaped face. With two large circles around the slit eyes, with remains of white pigments; a thin nose and a small, round, protruding mouth. Attached to the wooden mask is a primitive hand stitched double layered 7 x 6" 18x15cm) burlap type cloth ... morehead cover. Top layer has a small square hole. Inside are a couple of minor frays as can be expected. The abundant straw beard is intact and complete. It is purposely knotted in some places and is fastened to a couple of holes behind the ears of the wooden mask. This mask comes from tribes of Kasai in the village of Kamonia. Congo. The Kasai were an important tribe that appeared in the 16th century and were defeated by the Belgians before 1910. Lulua masks. Also known as Bena Lulua masks, are rarely found and not much information is recorded. All we could find out was that these kinds of masks were a pparently used during the circumcision of young boys or other rites of passage. We acquired this amazing artifact from a collection of a Missionary to Africa. The wooden face measures app. 11" 28cm) in length and about 6 1/2" 16cm) in width. The straw beard is about 4" 10cm) long. A small label identifying the mask is attached to the backside. Rare old Bena Lulua Mask with headdress. The Lulua(luluwa) people are in fact a collection of small groups whose home bordered by the larger Luba state and the related and. With whom they share a very similar culture, history, and language. Lulua masks, artifacts and figures are hard to get nowadays as their people's art vanishes with time. From my collection here is a rare, used in the village and striking old mask from the Lulua. The raffia and wicker hood from the headdress still intact. In my educated guess I estimate this mask to be 40 to 50 years old. An unrestrained and overwhelming looking mask! It measures 17 inches from north to south, not including the headdress. The Lulua people migrated from western Africa during the 18th century and settled in the southern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo(formerly Zaire) They number 300,000 and live in small regional chiefdoms and in times of crisis elect a common leader. The role of the village chief is to insure juridical, political and social cohesion. During the late 19th century, Lulua culture underwent radical changes. In 1875, the Lulua king, Kalambam, introduces new social and ... morereligious regulations, which ended the traditional palm-wine drinking and hemp smoking. Their economy is mostly based on agriculture. Hunt and trade. Primarily farmers. Lulua women grow manioc as a staple crop, as well as beans, sweet potatoes, maize, yams, peanuts, and bananas. The men are responsible for clearing the forest and preparing the soil for cultivation. They also hunt, fish with nets, and trap animals in the surrounding forests. Salt is found in the region and is collected and sold to neighbors to generate income. The Lulua statuary is remarkable in the degree of its scarification. A manifestation of a wish to be socially differentiated. These marks must be very ancient as in 80 th of 19 th century they were no found on the Lulua themselves. The statues represent great chiefs with beards and insignia. And these effigies would be planted in the ground to protect the household when the head of the family was absent. African Lulua Senufo Cast Bronze Mask Sculpture Cote D'Ivoire Ghana Mali Congo
Up for sale is one of several african bronze pieces I will be making available for sale. An update to this auction: I believe I have identified this mask as having come from either the Lulua or Senufo tribes. The Lulua tribe is a general term for the various tribes that live along the Lulua River in the Democratic Republic of Congo including the Bashilange. Bena Luluwa, Bena Moyo, Luluwa, and Shilange tribes. The Senufo tribe is native to Burkina Faso, Cote D'Ivoire, Ghana, and Mali. This is a bronze mask sculpture which I am listing as being of benin style. However I am not entirely sure if it is indeed of benin style. This piece looks to have been cast in several pieces. This piece really looks to have been repaired several times over the years. One of the decorative circular pieces on the cheek is missing from what looks to be in one ... moreof the areas that was repaired. There is a lot of wear and tear to this mask, with bends and some loss. When you hold it up to the light, there are small holes in various areas. This piece does have a nice patina, and mostly from what looks to be all the repairs made to the mask my estimate would be that this piece was made sometime during the 19th century, though I may be off in that estimate. Given the amount of wear, construction, and repairs it is really an intrigueing piece. When held up to the light, there are 5 small holes in the snout/bridge of the nose and there is a scratch on the inside of one of the horns. Across the back the mask measures approximately 8" by 4.5" at the widest points. Please note that I am not an expert on African antiquities and would welcome additional information on this piece. This piece came from Opfer's auction in Baltimore Maryland and was part of the same collection that appeared in their March 27 sale on Liveauctioneers(this piece was not sold during that sale. It came from a subsequent sale) This was from a living estate and the gentleman whose collection this and the other pieces I will be listing came from apparently work

A black shiny patina holding a cup and baby. It does show a couple of old age cracks and a tribal repair to the tufted coiffure, stunning piece! The Lulua statuary is remarkable in the degree of its scarification. A manifestation of a wish to be socially differentiated. These marks must be very ancient as in 80th of 19th century they were no found on the Lulua themselves. The statues represent great chiefs with beards and insignia, and these effigies would be planted in the ground to protect the household when the head of the family was absent. The most famous statuettes are the mbulenga, or female charm statuettes. The protruding abdomen of the woman emphasizes the importance of the lineage. Other figures are in crouching or squatting positions with raised hands resting on the neck and the oversize head. A very rare African hand carved Mask from the Lulua tribe of Kasai. Congo. It has a straw beard or"Raffi" and burlap head cover. It is an original artifact from the estate of missionaries to Africa. The mask is of hand carved wood. Curiously. The nose of the mask has only one nostril. There are no openings in the down turned eyes. Centre of the forehead has a carved V. Attached to the wooden mask is a primitive hand stitched double layered 7 x 6" 18x15cm) burlap type cloth head cover. Top layer has a small square hole. Inside are a couple ... moreof minor frays as can be expected due to age. The abundant straw Raffi beard is still intact. It is purposely knotted in some places and is fastened to a couple of holes behind the ears of the wooden mask. This mask comes from Lulua tribe of Kasai in the village of Kamonia. Congo. A very rare original African hand carved Mask from the Lulua Tribe of Kasai. Congo. It has a straw beard or"Raffi" and burlap head cover. It is an original artifact from the estate of missionaries to Africa. The interesting mask is of hand carved wood. Curiously. The nose of the mask has only one nostril. There are no openings in the down turned eyes. Centre of the forehead has a carved V. It is purposely knotted in some places and is fastened to a couple of holes behind the ears of the wooden mask. This mask comes from Lulua tribe of Kasai in the village of Kamonia. Congo. The Lulua Kasai were an important tribe that appeared in the 16th century and were defeated by the Belgians before 1910. Lulua masks. Also known as Bena Lulua masks, are rarely found and not much information is recorded. All we could find was that these kinds of masks were used during young boys rites of passage. This mask is estimated to be at least 100+ years old and is in very good condition for its age. There a couple of minor wood chips on the backside next to the ears. It's hardly even worth mentioning. This elegant figure represents an ancestor and was probably used to reach the spirit world. The elongated neck and scarifications give the sculpture a refined sophistication. This figure spent some time buried and has significant environmental and insect damage over the years. It shows significant age and is very fragile. I have not tried to clean or modify it in any way so as not to damage it. This item was obtained from an African trader in Equatorial Guinea who had obtained it from a tribal village.
