You can see and smell the age of this piece. This is a very rare and unusual piece. The exact age is unknown but looks to be a very early piece from the Songye tribe. Through research this is dated between the late 19th century and early 20th century. I haven't found another one like this. The smaller statues like this one were used by families to promote fertility. The larger ones were used by tribes to promote fertility amongst the entire tribe. African? Dogon? Wood Fertility Statue
I believe this may be a African dogon or similar statue. Definitely not anything modern. It stands about 4 ft tall. It has some cracking in the wood due to age. One of the arms is missing. Has a metal piece that looks like was used to brace the arm price which is missing. By the looks of it. I believe it has been missing for a long time. One of the arms(or both) may have been re-attached with glue or some type of adhesive. I am unsure. Looks like parts of the beard were chipped off somehow. Still a very nice piece that needs some TLC. Sold as is.

Wooden statue of a Fertility Goddess which I inherited from a cousin who told me that in his opinion it was made in the early part of the 20th century. However it could be older but I am not an expert in this field. He also told me that it came from a missionary who spent most of his life in Africa. The statue looks original to me. There are traces of white polychromy. at the head. The cuff links and between the legs, whereas red has been used on the chest. There are a few splits of the wood especially at the head, a sign of age which you would not find on a modern copy. There is a hollow in the wood in both legs. A piece of the left foot is missing and there is some damage at the other side of the right leg. The wood looks exotic but I am not sure which wood was used. We are happy to bring them to you. This statue/figurine is hand carved from a solid piece of dense reddish mahogany and it's much better in person than in our pictures. One side depicts a man with large genitalia and the other side is a woman. The arms are carved out from the body and the hands have six fingers. Statue measures 15" tall by 3 1/2" across. It would weaken or completely destroy evil spirits. Additionally it was said to cure or prevent sickness, judge disagreements, officiate contracts or oaths, and ward off bad deeds. Because people believed in these fetishes, they gained power and were effective. A person deemed holy or a diviner activated it. It comes from the region of either Angola(or Congo) and is typically made by the Yaka people. This will make a great display piece whether in a public gallery or in your home. This was purchased in the 90's for a private collection, but it dates much earlier. Vintage Handmade African Fertility Doll!! African Art Artifact Statue Figurine
DESCRIPTION I have recently purchased the figurine from a local estate sale. The daughter of the previous owner told me her parents purchased the doll and brought it home from a vacation to Africa in the late 1950's. Unfortunately. The daughter could not recall what tribe the statue has been crafted by but, knew her parents only visited Kenya and Uganda. I did so me internet re search of my own and it looks like it might have been made by the Turkana tribe. The statue stands 4.5 inches tall and 2 inches across. It consists of a wooden body. A loincloth, silver colored metal bands, two red bead eyes and a big m ane of hair. The loincloth is really two separate pieces tied at the waist. The body is in great shape and has a beautiful patina. I am not sure if the nose has been chipped and the wood has begun to age or. If the original artist ... morejust cut a little too deep. Either way it is not noticeable and I managed to get a pretty good photo of what I'm talking about. So please look closel y. The eyes appear to be the same red beads that adorn the loincloth. He is a little cross eyed but I think it a dds character. The hair appears to be died hemp twine bound by a small strap of leather and pierced with a nail that goes into the top of the head. Both loin clothes are made of an unknown animal skin but you can clearly see white hair that is still attached. The front cloth has three strings of beads and cowrie(cowry) shells and is tied around the shoulders. The back loin cloth is a little smaller and tied around the waist. RETURNS Bid with confidence! Attractive African Ethnic Solid Hard Wood Carved Statue Fertility Decorative
This is a very attractive hand carved. One of a kind African or similar style statue of a female form with children appearing to climb or cling to her. I thought it could be a fertility statue. It is in very good condition and very well crafted and is carved from very good quality, solid wood and is quite heavy and feels very substantial. There is a lovely deep and rich wood grain that runs through the piece. It measures 36cm high.
