An African Tribal Creations gallery NO RESERVE AUCTION This NO RESERVE auction is for a Mossi plank mask. The Mossi people came to be in Burkina Faso ... morefrom Ghana via a group of invaders who conquered the territory to become the largest ethnic group of Burkina Faso. An agrarian people who also raise cattle on a relatively large scale. The Mossi boast one of the only centralized governments for a single culture in West Africa. The population is divided into something of a caste system, and the art producing blacksmiths and wood carvers are actually separate castes. The art of the Mossi is generally reserved for the aristocratic, and though Islam has pervaded a large portion of Mossi culture, some of their original artistic styles still persist today. Of the two distinct social groups. The tengabisi are those who possess the masks. They are most renowned for their colorful plank masks. Which can often be several feet high and quite heavy. This is a small plank mask, most likely a reproduction due to its size, but tradition in style, and attractively pigmented. There is a superstructure on the lower portion of the mask featuring an antelope creature, not unlike that seen among the Bambara. The mask does not appear to have undergone any breaks or repairs. It demonstrates normal signs of wear from age, including minor dents, scratches, and age cracking, which should be considered normal. Though the pigment is faded in places, it is still strongly represented. A very nice piece that will make a lovely addition to any collection. Dimensions are 27" x 4.5" x 2" It weighs in at just under two pounds. Medium: Wood. Pigment NOTHING we sell at African Tribal Creations is made in China. Taiwan, Thailand, or wherever. BASONGYE, BASSONGO, BAYEMBE, SONGE, SONGHAY, WASONGA) There are numerous mask styles associated with the Songye. Power objects and objects associated with divination are also prevalent in Western collections. In the past many Songye objects have been misattributed to the Luba and vice versa. Songye origins are shared with the Luba through a common mythical Songye ancestor known as Kongolo. Who can be traced through lineages to the 16th century. The linguistic traditions of these neighboring peoples are intertwined as well. It is believed that the founders of the Songye emerged from the lake region in Shaba province to the south in the heart of the Luba homeland. The Lomani River divides Songye territory and marks the boundary of the areas invaded by the Luba. As a result of these geographic and political differences there emerged of two distinct social structures among the eastern and western Songye and two stylistic differences in art forms between the two areas. The Songye traditionally relied mostly on farming and hunting for subsistence. Because the rivers were associated with the spirits of deceased chiefs who were often buried in them. Fishing was not practiced except in times of great need. The artistic wares of the Songye, including pottery made by women and weaving and metalworking done by men, were traded extensively with their neighbors. They were recognized as superior craftsmen, and their products were in great demand. The Songye are divided into about 35 subgroups. The paramount chief(Yakitenge) and his advisers are the central power in Songye territory. Many of the subgroups were actually quite large. Were often spread over m

They are also known as the Warega. Living in small village groups. They have no centralized authority, but govern themselves through a communal association known as"Bwami. This association is composed of male and female members, who strive to advance up through the various ranks of Bwami, a long process which involves challenges as well as proof of knowledge. It is during the various Bwami ceremonies that the charming and popular heart-faced masks are used. The masks are transported in baskets from village to village by high-ranking elders. Lega masks are usually carved in a distinctive style, with a heart-shaped, concave face, slightly protruding forehead, narrow nose, slit eyes and a slightly open mouth, often with a rather surprised and charming expression. The surfaces of the masks are rubbed with kaolin/pembe each time they are used, and thus acquire their striking white appearance. Though fairly common, Lega masks continue to be incredibly popular with collectors. The social and political life of the Lega(also known as the Warega) is regulated by the Bwami society. To which both men and women belong. There are seven levels for men, four levels for women. Masks were used for initiation to one of the first two levels of the Bwami society. The white sections were repainted with Pembe each time they were danced. The mask was worn by the initiate and also displayed on a fence. Small masks like this were used as badg

AFRICAN ART BAMBARA MARCA 18" WOOD and METAL MASK from MALI AFRICA_Collectible!
Read more about the culture behind these masks by visiting the website Zyama(dot com) An excerpt from this site appears below. This seller is not affiliated with the operator of the Zyama site. The Bambara numbering 2.500.000 million form the largest ethnic group within Mali. The triangle of the Bambara region, divided in two parts by the Niger River, constitutes the greater part of the western and southern Mali of today. The dry savanna permits no more than a subsistence economy, and the soil produces, with some difficulty, corn, millet, sorghum, rice, and beans. Their traditions include six male societies, each with its own type of mask. Initiation for men lasts for seven years and ends with their symbolic death and their rebirth. Nearly every Bambara man had to pass through these societies in succession, until, upon reaching the highest ... morerank, he had acquired a comprehensive knowledge of ancestral traditions. The jo society has become a sort of framework for other initiation society. Until a few decades ago. Initiation was obligatory for every young man. Jo initiations take place every seven years, after candidates receive six years of special training. During this time, the young men go through a ritual death and live one week in the bush before returning to the village. There they publicly perform the dances and songsthey have learned in the bush, and receive small presents from spectators. After a ritual bath that signals the end of their animal life, the new initiates become“Jo children. Initially the ntomo was a society for uncircumcised boys. Today it closely resembles various Western associations in its bureaucratic structure and its administrative and membership fees. There are two main style groups of their masks. One is characterized by an oval face with four to ten horns in a row on top like a comb. Often covered with cowries or dried red berries. The other type has a ridged nose, a protruding mouth, a superstructure of vertical horns, in the middle of which or in front of which is a standing fi

Makonde Helmet Mask With Hair Tanzania Africa
Title, Makonde Helmet Mask With Hair Tanzania Africa Type of Object, Helmet mask, Country of Origin, Tanzania, People, Makonde, Materials, wood. Mouth chipped, a few missing hair scratches, chips Additional Information: This well carved helmet mask with naturalistic look with human hair in the head comes from the Makonde. The Makonde of Tanzania and Mozambique are one of the most prolific art producing peoples in eastern Africa. One of the most prominent of these arts are the life size helmet masks called Lipico which are worn on the top of the head partially covering the face and slightly tipped upward so that the dancer can see. Masks play a prominent ... morerole in Makonde life serving to mark the end of the initiation and circumcision cycle for boys as they move into manhood. The Lipico masks show a wide range of Makonde life and society as they depict initiates. Villagers, coastal Arabs and colonial officials. Makonde will sometimes embellish their masks with human hair(like on this example) or with beards; they will insert pegs for teeth, whiten the eyes and in a quest for realism often show human deformities. Most of the time such masks have a lip plug, which Makonde men used to wear. The type of wood used is locally known as njala. For several splendid examples and more information. Similar masks are also found among the Chamba people. Remnants of reddish pigment can be seen on the surface. Danced by the Mama and the Chamba of northern Nigeria. This type of mask is known as mangam and is seen as a powerful symbol of bush spirits. Identified as a bush cow, this mask represents more likely wild spirits of the bush with all of their power and potential and as a result the mask is linked to dangerous forces. Another description of the mask among the Chamba is that it represents a Chamba queen whose lineage claims descent from the forest buffalo. Other features are related to the wilderness are the jaws of the crocodile, while the horns are those of the forest buffalo. Tabwa art has only recently come to be identified as a separate style often confused with the sculpture of their neighbors or others who took Tabwa identity. Tabwa figural sculptures represent ancestors who were to assist in daily activities and during the hunt. Tabwa art is both a symbol and an aesthetic statement as the figures are often elaborately scarified in a fashion known among them until the middle of the twentieth century. Their carvings usually stand on a circular base with slightly bent knees and hands resting on their abdomen. Sometimes the hairstyle is a George Washington queue. The distinctive facial scarification consisting of a number of lines along the sides of the face and along the forehead and abdomen were the means whereby Tabwa identified themselves to localities and social status. Elaborate and attractive patterns and designs were worked into the skin according to the Tabwa concept of ‘kulemba’ that reflect aestheti

African Tribal Mask, Cote d'Ivoire, Ivory Coast, OLD with brass overlay; heavy
On auction is one African Tribal Mask made in Cote d'Ivoire. It is the oldest(and most expensive) that I had in my collection. I bought this in South Africa at a craft market from a vendor specializing in masks from West Africa. I have several that I will offer here as they have been in storage for ten years and no longer have place to display them. Sorry I don't have more information about this or the other ones I will be offering. I see that others know very well the tribal origins of the masks. I can describe it. Though. The mask is 18 inches tall x 9 inches wide x 7 inches deep. The wood is solid and hand carved and very heavy compared with the other masks I have. This mask has two small eye holes. The mask is one solid piece of wood and is unusual in that it has an ornate brass overlay over the face and forehead portions of the ... moremask. It also has three brass ornaments hanging down the front of the face of the mask with red cloth through the center of them and frayed at the ends where it comes out of the brass tubes. The brass overlay is dark with age. The wood ears and forehead ornamentation is hand-carved and seems to be from the same piece of wood as the mask. There is one age crack in the rear top of the mask which is old. I drilled one hold in the top part of the rear of the mask for a string to hang the mask. I offer this as the others with a starting price of $10. But paid MUCH more than that for it 11 years ago. That is about all I know! Thank you for your interest!

Additional Information: This wooden face mask from the Baule people of the Ivory Coast probably falls into ... morea special grouping known as ‘portrait masks’. Called “ndoma” by the Baule. They are said to portray an honored person of the village who is celebrated during a ceremonial dance known as “Mblo”. It is an aesthetic performance in which this beautifully carved mask would be worn with a multicolored costume and danced in the most graceful manner by either the person it represents or a relative. The costume would have been attached to the mask by cords that were threaded through the holes at the back of the mask. These masks are danced to entertain during days that the Baule do not work and they will also appear to honor important visitors to the village. This well carved and classic mask recalls the artistry of the Baule artists of the past. The refined and finally carved face may be similar to the person for whom the mask was originally carved to represent. Grebo masks are best known for their influence on early western modern art being found in the collection of Picasso who obtained a Grebo mask from his dealer Kahnweiler in Paris. There is no doubt as to the influence of the Grebo style mask upon the development of western art for they are a complete example of geometry in sculpture with the flat face, a long nose and tubular projectiles. The startling geometry of this mask with the double lines of 6 tube tubes each, flanking the strong profile of the nose and protruding lips is indeed a tour-De-force of sculpture. Little is known about the use of masks among the Grebo other than the fact that they are said to have been worn during wars by leaders as a kind of military costume. The masks

Dogon Mask with Carved Figure on Top Mali African
Title, Dogon Mask with Carved Figure on Top Mali African, Type of Object, Mask, Country of Origin, Mali, People, Dogon, Materials, Wood. Paint, Approximate Age, 20th Century last quarter, Dimensions, Height is 25 inches. Overall Condition, Fair to good, Damage/Repair, broken arm of figure. Chips, shallow cracks, Additional Information: A 20th century mask from Dogon with its stylized human face surmounted by a standing female figure. This figure has its arms upraised in Tellem style(one arm is missing here) It represents an important ancestor. The oral tradition of the Dogon tells us that they originated on the west bank of the Niger River about 1000 years ago. They moved west at some point. Into parts of what is now Mossi territory in Burkina Faso, but chose to return east due to pressure to assimilate into the Mossi Kingdom. This time, ... morearound 1500, they found a place almost unreachable by invaders on horseback-the arid but imposing Bandiagara Cliffs. Here most of the Dogon have remained to this day, as one of Africa's most spiritual people. Dogon family dwellings, as well as their shrines and granaries, are constructed in a uniquely haunting way, leaving even the most jaded observer spellbound, in what can only be described as a"magic kingdom. The Dogon have taken the time-honored worship of ancestors to new heights, and their huge pantheon of astounding and colorful carvings reflect this. It is possible today for tourists and scholars to arrange masked dances for public view, but these dances are for entertainment only, and only a few of the art-forms are actually revealed. Ritually meaningful ceremonies are not shared with the public. The Dogon have even made their funerals a unique spectacle. Accompanied by the chanting of Binu priests, the body is reportedly lowered over the jagged cliffs into its final resting place, as dancers venerate the life of the deceased. Quite a way to enter the heavens! The important PBS series"Africa" did a beautiful segment on the Dogon and Fulani. Recommended

Yoruba Gelede Helmet Mask, Nigeria, African Tribal Creations gallery, art, Yorba
An African Tribal Creations gallery NO RESERVE AUCTION The Yoruba people are the largest art producing ethnic group in Africa. And are renowned for their copious forms of artwork. A largely agrarian society, the Yoruba are distributed throughout Nigeria, Togo, and Benin, and number in the range of 12 million people. Their artistic interpretations of people are generally rendered in a realistic style, minus the exaggerated facial features, in contrast with many other African tribes which produce highly stylized, even surrealistic or impressionistic representations of the human form. A highly popular art-producing group among collectors, the Yoruba are known for their numerous and elaborate art forms as much as for their history of human sacrifice. The Yoruba culture is subdivided into a number of cults. Each identified by particular thing ... moreit holds sacred. This mask originates from the Gelede cult, which focuses its attention on the power of elderly women. During Gelede festivities helmet masks such as these are worn on or over the head with a raffia costume, and danced in reverence and celebration. On the'cheeks' of the face are large identifying scarification marks. It still has most of its original pigment, including white(kaolin) green, etc. Color of the pigment is faded in some areas, but still represented strongly for the most part, and the piece stands well on its own without support. Wear and age marks are in evidence as is common, including minor age cracking, rub marks, etc. but the piece does not appear to have undergone any serious breaks or repairs. This is a beautiful, prominent, eye catching standalone piece, and a highly coveted artform from the Yoruba culture! Jaw is secured with vegetal fibers in each side. The top is decorated with a carved elephant head. This is a probably an Ogoni mask used during the Yam festivals. Identification and attribution of masks from the Niger Delta region can be difficult. Since they were often carved by members of adjacent cultures for sale/trade to their neighbors. It is well-known that a number of Delta peoples, including the Ogoni, have used Ibibio carvers extensively in the past. The Ogoni. Like many groups throughout West Africa, have traditionally celebrated the harvest of important crops, like yams, with masked dances. Masks with hinged jaws are used by both the Ogoni and their neighbors the Ibibio for harvest festivals, as the movable lower jaw would make a happy, clacking sound when the dancers jumped up and down. The lives of the Ogoni have been severely disrupted by the pollution caused by oil drilling in their historic homelands, and this has caused thousands of them to move inland and disperse. As a result they have abandoned many of their ritual ceremonies, and their masks have become highly collectible. 68179* All content. Including pictures, Copyright Africa Dir

1920s? Senufo Kpelie Mask Kepelie Kpeli-yehe Ivory Coast and Mali - no reserve
A nice Senufo Kpelie mask with nice encrustation and wear. Great color. The hornbill depi cted o n the top of the mask is one of the first creatures on earth in Senufo mythology- is an important symbol for the Senufo and appears on many of their carvings. I purchased this from a British man who s aid his grandfather worked the dock in London in the 1920s and would by items from sailors returning from Africa. He said this was one such item. I have no idea i f that is true. Although it was always owned and worn by a man. Kpelie represented the concept of feminine beauty and fertility. The unique features which characterize the Kpelie mask include elongated flanges radiating from the bottom part of the mask, which are a reference to the hornbill bird. The horns on the mask refer to the ram. An important sacrificial animal. The nodules on the ... moreforehead represent palm nuts as well as vulvas; they are flanked by cicatrization marks that symbolize the twins born to the primordial couple. The Kpelie mask was used at initiation in the societies for boys. Adolescents, and adults, at funeral rituals designed to lead the spirit into the land of the dead, and at harvest festivals to thank the ancestors for a good crop. Kpelie- whether in carved wood or cast bronze copper alloy- are usually oval in shape with arched crescent shaped eyebrows over narrow slit eyes. The small mouth opens below a slender nose. Scarification marks add to presentation of what is considered beautiful to the Senufo. On either side of the temples are semicircular and rectangular shapes that represent the stylized coiffure worn by Senufo mothers; the center shapes at the side representing ears. Animal horns- bull. Ram or antelope- represent male attributes of the masquerade. There are often two appendages on either side of the chin, legs" that connect the spirit to the earth. Most important are the figures on the head, which represent an ancestor closely connected with the society's origin. The figures worn depend on the caste group to which the

It is well carved and shows signs of age and use. This mask from the Baule people of the Ivory Coast. This is a well-used example of Baule masks and is in good condition with particularly interesting and uncommon symbolism. Its very uniqueness combined with its quality of carving argues for a place in a major collection for it is a rare and unique example of its kind! It is difficult to place this offered mask into a set category of well known Baule masks. In general Baule masks dance to honor visiting dignitaries and serve during funerals honoring senior men and former notable dancers of masks. They are only danced by men member’s of the men’s secret society and seen only by initiated adult males. In any case they are not to be seen by women during their appearance under pain of death or a large fine. The masks serve a number of important purposes in that they serve to protect the village from external danger or war and to control the forces of nature. In the past masks of this type were generally blackened while others coming out in the 20 th century were often brightly painted. They are worn over the head with the dancer looking out

Hammered coper, beads, fur, large bell-shaped mask, hallowed eyes with one small see slit, geometric patterns. Kuba peoples call themselves“children of Woot” in honor of their founder. Kuba art is characterized by its use of geometric patterns and cowrie shells. Three types of mask have been associated with dances that take place within the royal compound. The first. Called Mwaashamboy represents Woot. Founder of the Bushoong tribe. The second, known as Ngaady Amwaash. Personifies Woot‘s incestuous sister-wife. The third mask, the Bwoom. Represents a pygmy and is associated with Woot‘s evil brother. This mask. Ngaady Amwaash portrays Mweel. Woot's beautiful sister and wife(alternatively, mother) and who represents ... morewomen in general. The mask is striking with its strong pattern of white and black triangles painted on the face, which are said to represent hearthstones and domesticity. Lines painted down the cheeks represent tears and recall the pain of death, for royal masks often appear in funerary contexts. The tears also denote the hardship of a woman's life as a"pawn" of male authority befitting the mask's name(Ngaady aMwaash) which means"pawn woman of Mwaash, her husband/brother king. Background History In the beginning of the‘60s. I used to live in a forest exploitation in Congo Brazzaville. The concession where we lived was on the top of a hill that was cleared. Lost in the immensity of the dense forest of Congo. Below flowed the river« Niari» I remember… some evenings when big ceremonies were taking place. I would sit on the terrace of our home and I listen to the tam-tams of the nearby villages inviting the MASKS TO DANCE… ... moreMy father and some friends who used to live there for quite some time would collect these« African things» Which the majority of the« white» community thought to be ugly, dirty, indifferent and worthless, like crazy. I am selling here some of the numerous objects collected in Central and Western Africa in the past. As well as some that are always collected« in situ» and in auction sales in Europe. I possess artefacts from all the periods and of all values; you will find some very old and sophisticated ones or. On the contrary, very primitive ones; you will also find later pieces that I have acquired for their admirable beauty and to pay tribute to the brilliant talent of the African sculptor. Many of my objects were presented in auction sales in Europe. Of course. Not all of them were bought(on average, 1 out of 3 or even 1 object out of 5 is sold in auction sales) So these artefacts were examined. Assessed and published in catalogues for sale. I will present some of them here. In such cases, I will mention it in the sale, and provide proof to the bidder(regardless of whether or not they finally purchase the item) I also have artefacts
Kuba Royal Mask Bwoom DR Congo African
Title, Kuba Royal Mask M'Boom DR Congo Africa, Type of Object, Mask, Country of Origin, DR Congo, People, Kuba-Bushoong, Materials, Wood. Hide, cooper alloy, beads, cowrie shells, Approximate Age, second half 20th century, Dimensions, Height is 13 inches. Width is 7 inches. Depth is 13.5 inches. Overall Condition, Good Damage/Repair, wear. Chips in places, rusting metal, dents, Additional Information: A wonderful example of one of the three accepted Kuba"royal" masks. Featuring exquisite geometric decoration. Intricate woven fringes with cowries and beads. This is beautiful example with adorned beaded face. This ia a royal mask known as Bwoom recognized by the bulging forehead the exaggerate nose, the mask would have been difficult to categorize. This is probably due to the diverse stylistic elements found throughout Kuba territory, ... moreas the mask has features more commonly found among the Kuba sub-groups. Bwoom" represents the evil brother in ceremonial reenactments of Kuba mythology, as well as the inevitable struggle for power among individuals. In these dances, Bwoom seeks both the mythical throne of his brother, Mwaash A Mboy, as well as the king's wife, Ngaady A Mwaash. Bwoom, a pygmy, symbolically speaks for the common man, with all the temptation and folly that entails. This colorful trio of characters comprises the recognized pantheon of the royal helmet masks, which are eagerly sought-after by collectors and museums. See SCULPTURE AFRICAINE, by Fagg. This mask has a bulbous forehead and an underslung jaw. Copper ornaments the forehead. Raffia headdress and beard are embroidered with cowries. And beads are found on nose, forehead, lips, and back of headdress. The raffia is hand-woven. This mask has a lot of presence and would stand out in any collection. Antique Extremely Rare CAST BRONZE MASK: Idia, the Queen Mother of Oba
AN EXTREMELY RARE. HIGHLY COLLECTIBLE, MUSEUM QUALITY CAST BRONZE PENDANT MASK: IYROBA. The size is about 8" Two similar items made in d'Ivoire are in British and Metropolitan Museums British Museum. Metropolitan Museum From the story. Several of the traditions that surround the Queen Mother can be derived. Prior to the reign of Esigie, it was customary to behead the mothers of the kings to prevent them from threatening the kingdom by using their magical powers to either initiate a rebellion and take over the throne, or harm the people in some way through the use of witchcraft. Esigie asked the Edo people(the people of Benin) to let his mother live so that she could help him defeat his brother and save the kingdom, and they agreed to let him establish her as queen mother only if he was to never see his mother again. This eliminated ... moredirect contact between the king and the queen mother and resulted in the removal of the queen mother to her own palace outside of the capital city in a village called Uselu. This d'Ivoire pendant mask pictured here is actually an image of Idia. The first queen mother. It was usually worn by the king during ceremonial occasions. The mask is hollowed out in the back, making it a perfect container for holding medicines that can protect the king while worn around his neck. The material used and the ornamental images carved around the face all represent the elegance and wealth of Benin royalty. The symbols of the Portuguese boast of the wealth of the Benin kingdom, and also of their good relations with foreigners and with ancestor spirits, because the Portuguese were thought to come from the world of the dead, as they crossed a body of water and had white skin. Also the symbols of the mudfish, which were thought to be very powerful and spiritual because of their ability to both swim in water and“walk” on land, decorate the mask, and associate the royalty of the Benin kingship and power of the queen mother with that of the spirit world. The d'Ivoire pendant mask depicts Idia
