I’m not sure what this is but it’s very old and very unusual. The closest I’ve found is a cache-sexe made of woven vine. It weighs 8.7 ounces, 9” wide, ... more5-1/4” top to bottom, 1” thick. The two sides are woven together to form a pocket. The belt or strapping is in two pieces and was probably much longer. I’m hoping someone will recognize this piece and have more information. Sold as is with no guarantee of authenticity. Please check photos and contact me if you need more information. Thanks for looking.

African antique necklace or metal and bead Cache-Sexe. modesty, pubic apron) from the Kirdi tribe in Cameroon and Nigeria. Item came from the large estate ... moreof a long time Santa Fe collector and dealer in African art. He had a gallery in Santa Fe in the 1960's and bought most of his things in the 1960's and 1970's. Many of the things I was lucky to buy were rare. Several sources where I have seen a similar looking item called this a necklace. And it certainly would be worn as one, but I found almost the same piece in the book"Africa Adorned" by Angela Fisher, copyright 1984, where she showed a Kirdi woman wearing a"picuran" as they are called there, with a similar brass and copper plaque and chain hanging, but this one has metal"nail" forms between the red beads, which research shows to be"phallic" symbols, sometimes also made and used as currency items. Both Fisher in"Africa Adorned" and Lois Sherr Dubin in her book “The History of Beads states that the cache-sexes “were worn by women and girls for protection and to attract attention. Different cache-sexe styles identify group affiliations. Age grades, and special conditions such as puberty, marriage, and widowhood. The Cameroon government has long outlawed the wearing of the cache-sexes, but the practice continues under the cover of long robes, especially by older women. gsrx_vers_486(GS 6.5.1(486)

Apron/ Kirdi Cache-Sexe African Beaded Apron - Cameroon 10"by 18
This old beaded apron. Known as a cache-sexe, was once used by the women of the Kirdi and Fulani Tribes of Cameroon, West Africa as their only article of daily clothing. The name literally means"to hide the sex" Beaded aprons long ago replaced the original pieces of iron or other metals and are still worn today on important occasions. This piece is fully intact, and displays wonderful telltale signs of use and obvious wear. Measurements are approximately 17 1/2" long by 6 1/2" wide with a 2" beaded fringe. This is an authentic Kirdi cache-sexe African beaded apron that I obtained from African traders a trip a few years ago to Cameroon. The Kirdi. From the Cameroon, create cache-sexes, worn by women, for protection and to attract attention. Different cache-sex styles identify group affiliations, age grades, and special ... moreconditions such as puberty, marriage, and widowhood. The Cameroon government has long outlawed the wearing of cache-sexes, but the practice continues under the cover of long robes. The glass beaded aprons reveal a variety of chevron and triangular patterns. It is claimed that the lower portion of the apron is deliberately cut(or torn) on a wedding night to symbolize the consummation of the marriage. Cache-sex pubic jewelry. Called pikuran by the Kirdi, is traditionally worn by women in place of clothing. Worn to attract the eye, it may also serve as form of protection against evil, like the penis shields of woven fiber and calabash shell that used to be worn by the Kirdi men. Only in the vary remote mountain villages do women still wear cache-sex jewelry every day, and it is usually only the older generation who do so.
