Large Yoruba Ancestor Figure- Benin Mid 20th Century. Original Wood. Pigment, patina Height 76.2cm( 30in) Ex-Dr. Justin Ph.D Collection. Tuscon, AZ; field ... morecollected in the Republic of Benin, 1978. Ex-Kirincich Collection. Tuscon, AZ, 2008 Catalog No. 1978.002.006 or 1978.008.006 found on base(7th numeral illegible) Detailed provenance documentation on file and can accompany the artifact for historical conservation purposes. The arts of the Yoruba are as numerous as their deities. And many objects are placed on shrines to honor the gods and the ancestors. The present example is an exceptional mid 20th century work that was field collected in Benin(the Yoruba live in both South West Nigeria, Benin, Togo and other coast areas) Some of the most elaborate court art in Africa comes from the country of Benin(once called Dahomey) home of the Fon kingdom, and from western Nigeria, home of the Yoruba and Edo kingdoms. Benin City, in Nigeria, is the capital of the Edo-speaking people. The art of the Fon kingdom incorporates animal imagery, symbolically associated with royalty and with proverbs that reinforce moral laws and the power of rulers. Since the seventeenth century, Yoruba-speaking peoples have been organized in a series of kingdoms. Much Yoruba art is made in association with deities known as orisha, each associated with particular iconography. The subject sculpture displays native repairs to the base, back, and sides of face. Good condition with natural wear, age cracks(all stable) erosion on the crest, and significant wood compaction on the underside of the base. Scarifications along the face and body. Appropriate of age, origin and medium. Please note this remarkable Yoruba figure was acquired by Robert Kirincich from Dr. Neil Justin. Ph.D. in 2008. Dr. Justin is a retired anthropologist and film maker whom has led over 23 safaris throughout Africa. Kirincich met Dr. Justin through the anthropology department at the University of Arizona and noted his collection included superior objects and early w

Lovely pair of antique war/ fighting clubs. One plainly african and with serious age as shown by its shape. Quality and stunning glossy patina. Its a ... morepleasure to swing and handle. The other is not as old, but im told it is from the pacific islands? This is a brutal club and is almost honed to a sharp edge, i shudder at the thought of what a hit from this club would do to someone. Again this is definately a fighting club and a nice example. Both are used. Original examples and show the typical wear and tear associated with being used as a blunt weapon. The african has some splitting to its head, the paddle shaped club is mint other than some impact damage to one part of the edge. Neither are recent'tourist' copys. The African one i would take to be late 1800's, the pacific one maybe ww2 era. Paypal only please. Payment required asap at auction end. Make sure you are happy with what you are bidding on before you bid. As due to the nature of these items i dont accept refunds.

Rare antique cast bronze figural relief. Made by the Dogon in Mali. Piece has a wonderful, very old encrusted patina on it and could date the piece to ... moreat least the 19th century and maybe even much older. 5” H x 4 1/4” W. A very unique image: It appears to be a head looking out of a decorative wall, with hands hanging from a bar, and a small, round base with holes at the sides to attach to something, not in the right place to hang to wear) It probably was some type of shrine piece(see below) Bronze casting has a long history in Africa. Going back to the 14th or 15th century, and culminating in the beautiful bronze wall plaques in Benin that record the images of the warriors that fought in the service of the Oba, King of Benin. I was told by an African friend that many of the wonderful Dogon bronze pieces in the collection I was recently able to buy, had various meanings for the individuals who owned them. They would have been taken into the“society house” similar to a meeting place, church, shrine) and used for various rituals including those ceremonies conducted by a“healer” or for funerary events. gsrx_vers_566(GS 6.7.1(566)

ANTIQUE LEATHER COVERED MOSSI TRIBAL DOLL WITH COWRIES, FROM BURKINA FASO
Mossi dolls are educational toys used to train little girls for their ultimate and important roles as mothers. In addition to their use as toys. Mossi dolls serve also as fertility aids to newly married young women; a bride takes along her doll when she moves to her husband's residence. The dolls serve two important roles in regard to this function. The first permits the child’s soul to enter the world of the their parents, thus inducing pregnancy. The second assures that the child does not die and return to the world of the ancestral spirits, but will remain with their mother and clan, thus assuring a healthy life. Should conception result from sacrifices made to the spirits, the mother will continue to nurture the doll just as she does her real child. Once a figure fulfills its purpose, it may be kept as an heirloom or given to the ... morechild that it helped bring into the world. The unique sculptural form of the Mossi doll encompasses both the symbols of youth and womanhood, ushering a small girl in to womanhood and a young woman into motherhood. It is possible to attribute many Mossi dolls to specific geographical origins on the basis of carving styles. The shape of the doll's head being the determinant characteristic. The style that is collected most frequently originates in the village of Ziniaré, northeast of Ouagadougou. The head is a semicircular disc, without facial features, and with a smaller half disc on each side forming the hairstyle. The neck is short and the torso is a simple cylinder mounted on a low pedestal or flaring base. Large numbers of these dolls were sold every day in the Ouagadougou market in 1976-77, but by 1983-5 they had disappeared. This example was acquired in what was then known as Upper Volta in about 1974. It appears to be well used and the cowries decorating it are very unusual for a Mossi doll. It may be that the cowrie shell on the front of the torso represents the female organs. Which were often carved into the wooden dolls; but this unique example is covered with le

Superbly carved Ibeji Male & Female, Nigeria / Yoruba / Santeria
Here is a fine example of an exceptionally carved Ere Ibeji male and Female pair from Nigeria. Measuring 10 1/2" by 2 1/2" Adorned with protective red/yellow beads and cowrie shells. When the carving of the Ere Ibeji is completed. The artist is given a feast and payment as determined by the Orishas. Once the figure is brought to the family dwelling, it is placed on a shrine dedicated to Elegba with the hope that the Orisha or soul, which was split in two parts when the twins were born, will now again reside in the figure that represents the dead twin. The sculpted figure is treated and cared for as if it were alive. It is rubbed in sacramental oil, washed, fed, clothed, sung to and prayed to. It is kept standing during the day, and is laid down at night. Often it will be dressed in the same clothing as the living twin, or be decorated ... morein a beaded vest or shown with raised sandals, indicating possible royal connections. The responsibility of caring for the ibeji is borne by the mother and female family members of subsequent generations. The sculpture is expected to avert evil from the household, strengthen the manifestations of family love, stare down death, illuminate the pathway through the valley of immortality, and bring good fortune to all who treat it with respect and offer it tokens of affection. Conversely, bad fortune and curses may be engendered if the ibeji is ignored. NICE PATINA Bid with confidence. No reserves! P lease see my other auctions for great deals.

Among the Yoruba, twins have special powers, much like the orisha. and are to be treated with respect throughout their lives. Dogon Standing Female Figure Nommo Mali African SALE Was $210
Title, Dogon Standing Female Figure Nommo Mali African Type of Object, figure, Country of Origin, Mali, People, Dogon, Materials, wood. pigment, Approximate Age, second half 20th century, Dimensions, 15 inches H. Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, general wear. Chips, Additional Information: A standing Female Figure lifting her breasts. The figure is wearing a carved labret under her chin. This well-used female figure comes from the Dogon of Mali. Known for their art as well as where they live along the heights of the Bandiagara escarpment Dogon art remains today some of the best known and collected African art. This female figure is a prime example of classic Dogon sculpture that represents a tradition of carving rarely surpassed for longevity or imagination for Dogon art extends to the past as early as the 12th century and continues ... moreto be created in the present. The figure stands with legs slightly bowed on a rounded base with her arms along her sides carved so that they hang free with her hands on her abdomen. The herniated naval is a commonly illness seen on both men and women in the region. Her exaggerated thighs and buttocks create a parallel to the shape of the breasts and shoulders extending out of the back. The figure may represent an ancestor or equally a Nummo. One of the eight primordial figures created by God. She may have been placed on a family altar or kept in the village priest s shrine where she would have offerings made upon her to infuse her with life force to assist humans on earth and to intercede with the deities. The offerings made over time have eroded and roughened the surface giving it an ageless presence. This is a classic Dogon sculpture and would be a prime piece in a collection as it reflects all the creativity and sculptural imagination of the Dogon sculptor who was the local blacksmith.Griaule, M. The Mani cult enrolled women and men and worked to assure health and to secure wealth and prosperity for the cult member. These charming figures takes their color from the magical application of roots. Plants, bark and seeds called Libele by the Azande. Local scarification patterns worn by the people are also carved onto the face and thighs and genitals of the figure. Janus Shango Shrine Figure, Yoruba, Nigeria / Santeria
Shango known as a powerful warrior and the fourth legendary king of the Oyo kingdom. Shango was renowned for his fiery temper, which was often compared to the thunderous roar and flashing lightning of a storm. The many myths surrounding Shango emphasize his impulsive use of power and his ability to destroy. One myth mentions that Shango’s chiefs ended his tyrannical rule by dethroning him and expelling him from the capital. After Shango hangs himself, his friends learn charm-making and acquire the power to attract lightning to take vengeance on the houses of their(and the former king’s) enemies. A second story recounts how Shango, fascinated with magical powers, inadvertently kills several of his wives and children with a thunderstorm he conjured up. His sorrow leads him to abdicate the throne and hang himself; his enemies scorn his name. ... moreWhen thunderstorms destroy much of the capital, Shango’s followers say it is the former king himself punishing the slanderers. A childless marriage is a grave problem that has serious repercussions on the relationships between wife, husband, and in-laws and on the village as a whole. Further, childlessness seems to be the wife's problem to resolve. According to Kate Ezra(1986) women with fertility and child-bearing problems in Bamana ... moresociety affiliate with Gwan, an association that is especially concerned with such problems. Women who avail themselves of its ministrations and who succeed in bearing children make extra sacrifices to Gwan, dedicate their children to it, and name them after the sculptures associated with the association. The characterization of this figure reflects a typical Songye male with hands resting on the stomach and wearing some form of a headdress and an elongated beard. Working within an established cannon of representation of power figures among the greater Katanga-Kasai region the sculptor has skillfully shaped the head and the extended chin and beard in such as manner to develop the sense of sculptural depth when viewed from the side by the undercutting of the head and face to the neck and body. The carving of the face. Eyes and nose are masterfully done. The chevrons on the surface and the seriated edges show the beard. Interestingly the hair style in the four chignons form indicate a possible connection with the Luba. Therefore this figure in addition

Additional Information: An interesting Ewe Vodun(or Voodoo) fetish in the form of a small figure which body is wrapped with encrusted materials. There is a magical device(probably a weapon) inserted in the belly. Though"vodun" art is better known among the Fon of Benin. It was actually the Ewe who are thought to have practiced the religion first. ... moreSuch power object, with its haunting face appearing to weep from libations, was used for diverting the meddling effects of witches. It appears to have been used for protection, probably kept on a small shrine which can even today be found in many households in Togo. The carving itself had no meaning whatsoever when it was created, and was possibly bought at a local market from a known carver. Depending on why the carving was purchased, the owner would then consult with a diviner, who would ask the owner to procure certain materials, which would in turn be used by the diviner to"energize" the object. In the case of this figure, the magical materials are covered and bound to the body. Usually, the contents could be almost anything, from fingernails to plants to animal parts. A rather long and elaborate ceremony was necessary, during which there would be chanting, music or dancing, and the ritualistic attachment of the materials to the figure. Trance dances would be performed by the diviners in from the Vodun figures like this. Instructions would be given to the owner on how to honor and care for the figure, and these could not be ignored or the magic of the piece coul

This latter posture enables the figures to perch on the edge of the ancestral reliquary known as a'byeri' with their legs hanging over the side. The byeri reliquary held the bones of ancestors and were venerated through annual ceremonies at which they were present in the form of the sculptures. With most of the villages situated on cliffs to the north and the east. According to Dogon oral tradition, the tribe settled in this area between the 14th and the 15th centuries, after escaping from the Mande kingdom. Legend has it that a snake led them to the cliff at the southern end of the plateau, where they overwhelmed and usurped the local Tellem and Niongom populations. The Dogon livelihood is based on agriculture concentrated in fields at the edge of the cliff, where water is scarce, but enough for occasional irrigation. Dogon social and religious organizations are closely interlinked and out of these arose four principal cults which accounts for the richness and diversity of Dogon culture. Dogon art is extremely versatile, although common stylistic characteristics- such as a tendency towards stylization- are apparent on the statues. Dogon figures are predominantly associated with the ancestor cult. They are carved either for personal or family use or, if they commemorate the foundation of a community, are worshipped by the village. The artistic influence of Niongom and Tellem traditions on Dogon statues is apparent. The Niongo

African/Congo Nkisi Nkondi (Nail Figure),ca 1880 - 1920
I am offering for sale an unusual African/Congo wooden Nkisi Nkondi or nail figure with glass eyes and a glass mid-section. Nail figures were constructed from the wood of sacred trees and were created to have a menacing appearance in order to protect the village. It measures 15” tall x 8” wide x 6” deep. The wood has a crack along the left side ofthe base just by the foot and there are chips here and there. However. None of these appear to compromise its stability. This is an old work of art, ca 1880 to 1920, that has endured the test of time and simply shows wear commensurate with its age.

Old Hanging African Faces Artifact- Possible Mahogany or Teak
Old hanging African faces wooden artifact. Heavy piece of wood. Very good condition. Height 22 inches. Width 6 inches and depth about 3 1/2 inches. Very heavy piece. Being sold as is, no returns on this item. I purchased this from a friend whose husband worked for the World Bank. They spent several years in Africa. I cannot recollect the country. She put varnish on this piece because she displayed it in her home in Africa. I would guess that the wood is either mahogany or teak. The wood is dense and heavy. Originally I called it a mask but it has no holes for the eyes. I have other items that I purchased from her and they will be listed on Ebay in the near future. Any questions. Please email us at my ebay. Please click on sellers other auctions on our ebay store.

The Congo Collection: Power Figure - Bakongo Nkisi Nkondi Fetish - Tribal Zaire
This is a very nice Bakongo Fetish which I picked up in the D.R.C. in 2009 whilst in the Katanga Province. He is an imposing little character who stands at approximately 14 inches in height. His mouth is pulled open in a fearsome fashion. His body is bound by a rope and he carries a very large terrestrial snail shell on his back. There is a wicker-weaving bound to his back and nail pierces his left upper back, in the vicinity of where the shoulder blade would be. He is also adorned with a woven head-dress. Stuffed with the feathers of a Red Rooster or Red Hen. This fetish has its own special energy and is not a new piece. I am estimating the age of this piece to be between 30 and 40 years. Note in the picture that a portion of the base is missing due to some very old insect damage. The rope which binds his torso is hiding a stomach cavity ... morewhich is utilized for placing herbs and magical material. This piece is also perfect for adherents of Santeria. Candomble, Regla de Ocha, Lukumi, Palo and Vou Dou, as it may be utilized as Echu(Eshu or Echu) the door opener of the Orishas. This latter posture enables the figures to perch on the edge of the ancestral reliquary known as a'byeri' with their legs hanging over the side. The byeri reliquary held the bones of ancestors and were venerated through annual ceremonies at which they were present in the form of the sculptures. Photographed as early as 1907 the cult of Byeri began to lose its prominence after 1910 due to colonial government pressure. 71707* All content. Living mainly in the forested areas of south-west Nigeria. On both sides of the Niger River the Igbo number some ten million individuals. Mainly farmers and merchants, they also hunt and fish. They are subdivided into thirty-three subgroups and are spread out among about two hundred villages scattered through the thick forest or semifertile marshland. Only on the northern and western edges of the area, under influence from Igala and Benin, are hereditary rulers found. The heads ... moreof families form the council of elders, which shares its power with numerous secret societies. These societies exercise great political and social influence. They are highly hierarchical, their members passing from one level to the next. There is strong social pressure toward individual distinction, and men can move upward through successive grades by demonstrating their achievements and their generosity. The lack of overall centralization among the Igbo-speaking peoples has been conducive to the development of a great variety of art styles and cultural practices. The earliest sculpture known from Igboland is from the village of Ibo Ukwu. Where the grave of a man of distinction and a ritual store, dating from the 9th century AD, contained both chased copper objects and elaborate castings of leaded bronze. Ibo sculpture is subject to rather strict rules: the figures are generally frontal, symmetrical, and upright, with legs slightly spread, arms held away from the body, and hands stretched forward, palms open.
