A figure such was used to promote fertility among the female members of a family and also to guarantee successful births. The mask was repainted numerous times and the surface indicates much handling. The offered mask is beautiful with its original paint. Such masks appear in the Dye ceremony or with a dancing mask group that consists of a number of animal masks that are elegant. Fearsome, and powerful. The Dye(Je) dance troop consists of the masks that represent monkey. Hyena, elephant, buffalo, roan antelope, hippopotamus, and dog. Dye masks are violent in their behavior and are not to be seen by females or children who lock themselves indoors or leave the village when the masks appear in the early light at daybreak. In the past these masks served as the highest display of male authority dispensing justice and exercising social control. The Dye masks are supreme symbols of male authority and were prominent in the past whereas today they still dance in the village but mostly appear at the funerals of prominent persons. An unusual Guro face mask from Cote d'Ivoire. The workmanship on this piece is very fine. And the overall proportions are graceful in the way one looks for in good Guro sculpture. The projections around the face are unusual, and might indicate Senufo influence, an interesting example of stylistic cross-fertilization- the Senufo and Guro are neighboring peoples. I bought this piece from a generalist antique dealer in Montreal; it has a pair of old labels on the interior, one from Empire Auctions, a Montreal company(see photos) The mask measures 16 1/2" tall from tip of horns to bottom of chin, about 5 1/2" across, and is 4 1/2" deep. The stand in the images is just to position the piece for the photograph, and is not included in the sale.

Its form suggests the offered piece was used as a shields and probably a symbol of strength and power. The shield is heavy and would have been used and prestigious object rather than as a war shield. The carved figure adds an aesthetic element to the technical process of weaving. The hole on the top were ... moreused to pass the e strap i the form of a twisted rope. The pulley would have a wooden bar in place of the usual treat spool. The wood has a well worn dark patina that derived from much handling.This heddle pulley shows good age. Heddle pulleys are used in weaving cloth out of native grown cotton and are often sculpted with symbolic imagery. The cord attaching the pulley to the loom was passed through the holes in the head and would be tied to a crossbar of the loom. The roller(generally an old thread spool) over which another cord moved up and downwards was held in place between the two legs of the pulley by a small stick pushed through the center hole of the spool from one leg to the other. The heddle pulley is an integral component for the double-shed loom so common in West Africa where it would open spaces so that the warp(the lengthwise threads) would be separated from the weft threads(horizontal or crossing threads) to allow a shuttle to pass through with the weft threads. 75200* All content. The Guro have lived in the western Cote D'Ivoire for generations. Having arrived from the north perhaps 700 years ago. They are from Mande stock, unlike their Akan neighbors. The Guro are famous for their colorful masks. The most familiar Guro mask is of a woman, often with an elaborate superstructure and wild, over-the-top painting. These are thought to represent the spirit of"Gu, a female, and the wife of a supernatural creature called"Zamble. Zamble masks are carved in the general shape of an antelope head, but features of other important totem animals are also incorporated, like the crocodile and hyena. This lost wax cast of a copper alloy mask(bronze or brass) comes from the Guro or Baule people of the Ivory Coast in west Africa. Though brass masks are not normally used by the greater number of Akan peoples including the Asante or Fante. They are often found attached to various chiefly regalia prominent on sword sheaths or chiefly stools. They are said to represent the heads of defeated enemies and are shown with some evidence of ... morelocal scarification which is rare among the Akan but often shown on terracotta sculptures. The face shows a beard around the lower section of the mask. It is difficult to determine the age of this small mask however the attention to detail and the abstraction of the features show that this was the product of a skilled craftsman. However not every shrine has one of these figures. Figures are made and placed in close proximity to a shrine only after a diviner determines that it is needed. Shrines are composed of different objects and materials that might include pots filled with various'magical' materials. Remains of offerings, eggs and cola nuts. The figures are said to be the messengers of the protective spirits residing in the shrine. This standing female mi ir ne is a good example of a late style of carving based upon earlier traditional examples. The figure is dramatically carved with an expressionistically exaggerated body with her elongated neck, pendulous breasts and navel. She misses the complex body markings- scarification patterns usually found on abdomen, back, forehead, neck and legs of such figures. Among people of West Africa swords come in different shapes and serve ceremonial. Ritual and political purposes. The earlier European visitors noticed the great beauty of African swords as early as the mid-1600's. Such swords are primarily ceremonial and parade swords for they have neither point nor cutting edge. Swords are prominently displayed at royal courts as regalia of the king reflecting his power and authority. Sword bearers precede the king or rest at his feet when he sits in state. During occasions when the king is carried in his litter they rest their sword hilts against the litter. Swords are used to swear oaths to the king and state, and to identify messengers as they carry the king's word while on the king's business. For your consideration. This beautiful, TALL wood mask is hand-carved by the Guro people(also called Gouro or Kweni) of the Ivory Coast(Côte d’Ivoire) in the valley regions of the Bandama River. The elephant carved on top links the Guro people spiritually to that animal. The Guro are the most prolific artists in Africa. This measures 7" wide X 28" tall and is 6.25" deep. There is a chunk taken out of the wood at the back of the chin(see pic) but it is not visible from the front unless you looked underneath. The stem from the chin in front is fractured at the base but still intact and very strong. I think his horns were longer as they seem rough. The standing female figure is finely carved and shown with carved beard. Making it an hermaphrodite character. At one time, the mask was embellished with white pigment. The residue of this pigment is still seen in many places. This well-carved mask in a highly elegant form would be well placed in a collection. Guro masks such as this are made for use by the"Je" Society. A group of elders and wealthy men who oversee almost all facets of Guro village life, from celebrations, to funerals, to agricultural and magical rites, to judicial proceedings. It is during"Je" ceremonies that the masks appear. Among the Yaure such a mask is used primarily for the Lo ceremony and at times may dance in the Je ritual celebration that cleanses the village after the death of an individual. The mask has a large open mouth showing four carved teeth. Such masks belong to the category of Zamble masks, Zamble masks are carved in the general shape of an antelope head. But features of other important totem animals are also incorporated, like the crocodile and hyena. Masks from the northern part of Guro territory are used in a variety of ceremonies, usually related to one of the many secret societies. Guro masks remain extremely popular with collectors. The Guro have lived in the western Cote D'Ivoire for generations, having arrived from the north perhaps 700 years ago. They are from Mande stock, unlike their Akan neighbors. The Guro were originally known as the"Kweni, but during the brutal colonization by the French between 1906 and 1912 they were assigned the Baule name"Guro. Miniatures like this are use as personal mask of initiated adult men and would be carried everywhere When traveling, initiates would take passport masks with them in leather ... morepouches. The masks would serve as protective spirits. Passport masks serve also to mark the passage of an initiate into the men's secret society and his elevation into the higher ranks. They may be presented at meetings of senior members of the men's society to indicate their right to be present and participate in the deliberations. Diviner would recommend that small masks be given to children to wear to ward off evil witches or cure illnesses. Passport masks were kept on personal shrines when not in use.
