It was sculpted by hand and cast in bronze using the lost wax process. The people of Benin(now known as Nigeria) are descended from the Ife tribe and have been making bronzes in exactly the same way for many hundreds of years. I am not an expert; it is therefore quite difficult to date this piece accurately but I believe that it was probably made in the first half of the 20th century. Of course there is a distinct possibility that it could be considerably older. There are a few small holes here and there and a couple of larger ones on the head(see photos) There is also some oxidisation. Mainly on the face. Condition is otherwise good. BACKGROUND The powerful ancient Benin kingdom was founded by the son of an Ife king in the early 14th century AD. It was situated in the forest area of southern Nigeria. The art of bronze casting was introduced around the year 1280. The kingdom reached its maximum size and artistic splendor in the 15th and 16th century. For a long time the Benin bronze sculptures were the only historical evidence dating back several centuries into the West African past. And both the level of technical accomplishment attained in bronze casting, as well as the monumental vigor of the figures represented, were the object of great admiration. Benin bronzes are better known than the artworks from Ife or Owo due to their presence in Western museums since 1890s. In the thirteenth century, the city of Benin was an agglomeration of farms enclosed by walls and a ditch. Each clan was subject to the Oba(king) The“Benin style” is a court art from the palace of the Oba, and has nothing in common with tribal art. Fantastic Antique Carved Wood Statue Sculpture African Woman, Signed,1920, Nice
Here is a beautifully carved dense hardwood sculpture/statue of a young African woman. The origin is most likely European and the period is circa 1920. Which is evident by the headband and bow hair decoration. The carved details of the woman's face, hair, ears and earrings are amazing. It is signed with the carved initials C.R. and the number 29205. She measures 9-1/4" high, with a circumference of 13-3/4" at the round bottom platform and 11-3/4" at mid head level. This antique piece has separating cracks at the back of her head and neck(see photo) with some smaller faint scratch marks on the sides of her face. Bronze statue of archer warrior or hunter, who also is equipped with hatchet on his shoulder and knife in his belt. 10" tall. Base is 3½" wide. Remarkable relief in hair. Costume, base, hands, feet, etc. Squarish head and face with wide, deeply carved mouth is mustached in a braid/plait pattern. Typical(charming) coffee bean eyes. This is a very interesting vintage or antique African head sculpture carved from the center of a small log. It is a very hard wood and I believe it to possibly be ebony. It measures approx. 12 1/2" tall and 6" in diameter at the top and weighs a dense 7.5 pounds. It shows typical and light cracking in places. But it remains very intact.
