You can see and smell the age of this piece. This is a very rare and unusual piece. The exact age is unknown but looks to be a very early piece from the Songye tribe. Through research this is dated between the late 19th century and early 20th century. I haven't found another one like this. The smaller statues like this one were used by families to promote fertility. The larger ones were used by tribes to promote fertility amongst the entire tribe. Here is a fantastic statue from the LUBA tribe. Congo. This is a very large piece measuring 25 inches tall. This is a 20th century piece. Weight: 2.90 pounds. As you can see from photographs there is minor damage to the back of the head and at some point in the pieces life is has had its hand repaired. This is common damage for tribal art and cannot be seen unless looked at closely.

The Bwami society is the context for the production of most Lega art work. Which includes bone and wooden statuettes and masks. In the 16th century the Lega began their long migration from modern day Uganda into their present location. They were a warlike people whose fierceness inspired those. With whom they came into contact, to adopt many Lega customs. In the 17th century they attacked the Rwandan outpost of Rutshurer on their way to Maniema, just west of Lake Tanganyika, dividing and conquering the people who lived in the region. The Congo Collection: Rare African Madagascar Sakalava Figure - Carving - Statue
This is a very rare Standing Malagasy Female Figure from the Sakalava People of Madagascar. The details and dimensions are as follows: Age: Approximately 80 Years- Circa 1935 Origin: Sakalava Peoples of Madagascar. Material: Wood. Dimensions: Height Overall: 35.4 inches. Width at Shoulders: 9.45 inches Width of Head: 8.66 inches. The statue has various age- Environment- and transportation-related defects. Reverse Side- entire left rear quadrant is missing from the hairline to the buttocks. The age-old fracture continues down the left rear of the leg. The break which resulted in the missing rear aspect of the statue is extremely old- it is not a recent break. There is a foot break(Right Front) which resulted from international and trans-oceanic transport two months ago. This is displayed in one of the pictures and is a recent break. Which ... moreI still chide myself for. But no matter how well I think I wrap these pieces for international transport, there seem to be pachyderms in the baggage areas of the airports I frequent. There are also slight age cracks in the back of the head and on the neck in the front. There is a fissure which runs through the center of the statue. Most likely once the core-area of the tree-trunk section- which this figure was carved from. Age cracks, extreme weatherization, breakage and missing extremities are common for Sakalava Figures. This is due to their continuous exposure to the elements: moisture, wind, salt air, and sun. Via the frontal view of this piece. The vertical strip missing from the posterior is not visible. Other than the foot fracture- the statue looks flawless from the front. The wood is extremely hard, very weathered and very heavy. These Sakalava figures in their own fashion remind me of Burmese. Cambodian and Laotian Buddhas- they are very often extremely weathered, with"faded" facial features and missing extremities- which does add to their artistic charm and romantic appeal. They are guaranteed original late 1800's very early 1900's. Has white clay in the eyes. Head band, and red in the stomach opening. Very old iron nails with some cloth tied around some of the nails. The patina is very shiny in some areas as if this statue was rubbed repeatedly especially around the head band area. Original African Tribal Art Statue Fertility Goddess Congo Pende nice patination
Wooden statue of a Fertility Goddess which I inherited from a cousin who told me that in his opinion it was made in the early part of the 20th century. However it could be older but I am not an expert in this field. He also told me that it came from a missionary who spent most of his life in Africa. The statue looks original to me. There are traces of white polychromy. at the head. The cuff links and between the legs, whereas red has been used on the chest. There are a few splits of the wood especially at the head, a sign of age which you would not find on a modern copy. There is a hollow in the wood in both legs. A piece of the left foot is missing and there is some damage at the other side of the right leg. The wood looks exotic but I am not sure which wood was used. It would weaken or completely destroy evil spirits. Additionally it was said to cure or prevent sickness, judge disagreements, officiate contracts or oaths, and ward off bad deeds. Because people believed in these fetishes, they gained power and were effective. A person deemed holy or a diviner activated it. It comes from the region of either Angola(or Congo) and is typically made by the Yaka people. This will make a great display piece whether in a public gallery or in your home. This incredible drum is carved from a single piece of wood, with hide drum head. And metal studs(SEE PICTURES) Tool marks can be seen throughout as well as on the base and the carvings are very detailed. The carving is the work of a skilled artist! The drum features a seated woman holding the drum above her head. Note the amazing detail in the face. Body, and adornments of the figure. The drum is decorated with a geometric pattern design which encircles it. The color is a rich chocolate brown with nice patina. Condition: Good condition with some misc. scratches. Age cracks, and dings here and there. There are a few small chips to the base(see pictures) One large crack can be seen on the torso of the figure and several others are visible on other parts of the drum. These old cracks do not affect the integrity of the piece and it is VERY SOLID AND HEAVY! The hide drum head is fully intact with evidence of use. You are bidding on a REAL OLD LWALWA PEOPLE Carved Statue of a Standing Figure. From Congo. Some small figures are carved for divination and display on shrines. But the majority of Lwalwa art in collections consists of beautifully sculpted masks, characteristically elongated, with prominent noses, rectangular eyes, and a small hole between the mouth and nose, through which a cord is passed in order to secure the mask on a dancer's face. Lwalwa religion entails belief in a supreme god(Mvidie Mukulu) and an omniscient creator(Nzambi) Respect is paid to recently departed ancestors. And offerings are made to various nature spirits who have shrines built in their honor. It is believed that everything has a spirit(mukishi) which can be offended and cause trouble. These spirits must be appeased if balance and order are to be maintained. Item Description Tribe: LEGA Tribe. Country: Democratic Republic of Congo. The LEGA people live nearby the northern end of Lake Tanganyika on the banks of the Lualaba River in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and are also known as the Warega. Living in small village groups. Usually situated at the summit of a hill surrounded by a palisade and have no centralized authority but govern themselves through a communal association known as Bwami. The position of chief is held by the oldest member of the clan who must also hold the highest grade within Bwami society. The LEGA. Like many African societies, are organized into levels into which individuals progress ... moreas their age and wisdom increase. There are five levels in the society and the level that any individual has achieved is identifiable by the objects he is permitted to own. The highest level, the most accomplished and learned adults, are permitted to own small mask-like items to mark their status. The next level down is identified by ownership of maskettes. You are bidding on an Original REAL OLD PENDE PEOPLE Carved Wood Statue of a Kneeling Male Figure. From Congo. The Pende carve numerous types of masks. Most of which are associated with education and initiation rituals. In the northwest part of the territory wooden figures are sculpted. Carved stools, staffs, chairs, and swords are used by chiefs and other important people to signify their power. The Pende. Along with their neighbors the Yaka and Suku, can trace their origins to modern day Angola, between the Atlantic Coast and the Kwanza(Cuanza) River. They were forced north to their current region during the Lunda expansion in 1620, which also resulted in numerous cultural influences. They are divided into two major groups, a western group who live just to the east of the Yaka and an eastern group who live on the western bank of the Kasai ... moreRiver. Although each group is culturally distinct they consider themselves as one people. The Chokwe expansion around 1885 engulfed most of the eastern Pende and some of the western group as well.
