Few African cultures can boast a history as long and as proud as the Kuba who live along the Snakuru River. Their history parallels Great Zimbabwe at its founding and grew along with the Benin. Kuba Chief Shamba-Bolongongo(1600-20) visited Benin and introduced the iconic Kuba knife ikula. Which was subsequently represented in Benin sculpture. The Kuba prospered in a society which valued material things and ordinary objects, particularly those associated with the Royal Court, were made to the highest standard. Their geographic location and the ferocity of their warriors made them virtually free from the predation of slavers. Classic form as introduced in the 17th century. 9 3/4” wasp waisted blade with offset edges flanking finely chiseled line work bands. Thick tapered raised medial. This is a hand crafted African Knife that was made in Diffa. Niger. I traveled to Diffa in 1992 as an employee of the non profit company Africare Inc. based in Washington DC. As a show of grattitude a member of the Hausa people presented me with this beautiful knife. One side of the knife has the word Niger engraved and the other side has Diffa engraved. This axe has a lovely thick forged axe head with forge rolled upper and lower edges, nice crisp beveled cutting edge and geometric designs and piercings to the main portion of the blade. The entire shaft is covered in Waran(monitor lizard) skin that remains in excellent condition with a few small losses an tearing where the skin used to be stiched toghether- due to the natural shrinking(see the pics) These axes are both a symbol of prestige and also used as currency. Antique African Congo Art, Unique Leaf Design Kuba Knife/Dagger - 14" LONG!
A large hand forged leaf shaped late 19 th or early 20th Century Kuba dagger/sword of the Congo in the Central African Republic. The knife measures 14" long and has an 11 1/2" blade that is nearly 3 1/2" wide at its widest point. The blade has some very simple linear tribal designs along the center and has a mottled gray-brown patina overall. There are some areas of light surface oxidation present as well. The wood grip is a stout design and has a wire wrap in center that is somewhat loose. There are a few small chips and several brass tacks around the edges. It is numbered 2470 on the grip end. This is a unique"leaf" dagger that would make an interesting addition to any collection. Such weapons can be found in museums and high end galleries. Additional info: Knives. There are seven tips ranging from 2.5” to 11” The collection also includes a lizard claw from a shaman’s kit. There are tiny glass beads used for trading and shell money from the Musonga tribe in the Congo. All items were collected around 1890 in various locations in Africa. This 120+ year old collection was locally framed at that time. The details of the collection are inscribed on the back of the frame(see picture) It is signed by what appears to be F Cox. It was subsequently given as a Christmas present as seen in red writing above the original inscription. This highly unique and rare collection is guaranteed to be authentic. It is believed to be a Djibouti Gile dagger as used by the Danakil. Issa and Afar peoples of East Africa. It measures 15 3/4" in length and is in excellent condition as per the photos with very slight play to the crossguard but otherwise tight and sound. We have been unable to find an example of a similar knife, but the documentation we received with this piece states that it is an"African Ceremonial Knife- Mali" As can be seen from the photos, the blade has a very broad profile, a bit like a trowel, but is flat, and without any sharpened edges. This large knife and smaller dagger is attribute to the Bushoong clan of the Kuba peoples of central African Congo. The sheath is made of animal hide. And reed. The larger of the two blades is a hand wrought, hammered, blade, it has a carved wooded handle. The carved wood handle is approximately 5 5/8 inches long, The unusually shaped, full tang blade is flat, double edged, with 3 hammered fullers running from tang to the bottom edge. This blade is approximately 15 1/2 inch long. 3 1/8 inches in width at the top, and 4 inches at the bottom. Each edge is a gracefully concave. The Shape of the sheath mirrors the shape of the blade. Today I am offering a rare 1800's khodmi/bou saadi north african/algerian morrocan knife that is stamped/signed on blade in several spots. The knife is roughly 9 inches long. Blade is roughly 6 inches in length and handle is roughly 3 inches long. The blade has several stamps and what I think is a signature or tribe mark. The knife is in really good antique condition. I don't collect items like this so could you please send me any information you may have. I've been told by experts this is from the early 1800s and is either African tribe. Or Eskimo. The spear head is hand made. Please look at the pictures and you'll see how unusual this is. Really nice wire wrapping detail. On the end the wire has been tucked inside the shaft.
