Each of the 256 configurations that can occur is known by a name and is associated with a body of oral literature. As the babalawo chants the appropriate verses. Clients interpret them to apply to their own situation. The babalawo proceeds to attract the attention of Orunmila and Eshu by rapping a special tapper, the iroke, on the border of the opon ifa, and at the same time reciting verses to acknowledge and honor Eshu, the messenger. The head of the diviner and the spiritual head. Or face, on the tray are at the point of the intersection of realms, prepared to transmit messages ... morefrom beyond to those in this world. Damage/Repair, old chips in hairstyle and at edges. Chips with repairs in base, Additional Information: A miniature Ife clay Head with an elaborate ... morecoiffure(carved headgear) The headdress on this clay head is a representation of a beaded crown worn by a queen at Ife. Thus. This is a memorial head of a queen. The base of this neck indicates that this head is a fragment or probably a part of a full figure of a queen. The famous archaeological site at Ife in Nigeria produced a number of remarkable objects and wonderful sculpted heads and figures cast in bronze as early as the 1100s. Ife is considered to be the center and origin of the Yoruba people. That this is a replica cannot be doubted. However what is important to note is that the skill of the Nigerian craftsmen of today who molded this sculpture after a much earlier model continue a tradition nearly 1000 years old and have not lost their skill in producing interesting works of art. White-faced masks are used by the Idoma primarily for funerals, as the color represents death. Statues, when found, tend to be quite large, like our example. In the southeastern portion of Nigeria, the Igbo are as artistically prolific as any on the African continent. Though mainly merchants and farmers today, supplementary and interspersed hunting and fishing does provide for many families. The lack of centralized unification among Igbo people has led to an incredibly diverse series of artistic styles, many of which are based upon a series of fundamental ideals. Hollow Wood Cells Because of the misunderstanding regarding hollow wood cells. A brief explanation is needed. Any person dating carvings has many criteria to determine age. The breakdown of the wood cells is an important aspect of age determination. The strength of the wood is the outer edge of cells. The cell center(like bone marrow) is the passageway that feeds the wood. This center lacks strength as it is softer then the cell walls, thus it disintegrates more quickly. Laboratories determine the progress of the cell center decay to determine the wood age. This varies some by the tree variety also the location of the carving must be considered. It is difficult if not impossible to find a 300 year old carving in the tropics as humidity speeds destruction. Also wood eating insects are a big problem. Many of the Dogon areas are in the dessert above the insect line. Pieces can and are stored above the insect line for many cen

Yoruba Eshu Dance Wand, Staff, Yorouba, Nigeria, African Tribal Creations, art
An African Tribal Creations gallery NO RESERVE AUCTION! Normal.dotm 0 0 1 131 751 Full Sail 6 1 922 12.0 0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false This NO RESERVE auction is for a Yoruba Shango Dance Wand. These wands are intended as an object to be carried by worshippers loyal to the god Shango. Especially during celebrations that champion him, and are considered one of the most important pieces of art in the Shango cult. In the canon of Yoruba mythology, Shango, or Sango, was once a mortal king, and an ancestor of the Yoruba people. He was considered to be an extremely powerful, and often violent ruler, capable of producing thunder and lightening. This power, however, eventually resulted in his death, which came through the accidental destruction of his own palace with lightning. His followers believed that after his death. He became a ... moredeity. Wands or staffs such as these typically depict a follower of Shango. The colors red and white, sacred to Shango, often embellish the carving and are procured from natural pigments. Known as a trickster god among the Yoruba pantheon. Eshu is widely worshipped, and both adored and feared by his followers. The god is commonly blamed for deeds of mischief, but also for great rewards and fortune, and terrible misfortune as well. Like the wands of the Shango cult, similar objects are produced by those who closely worship Eshu, and these can be quickly recognized by the characteristic headdress displayed on this piece. This wand is medium sized, featuring a male worshipper, and displays a thick chocolate brown patina, and pigment in many areas, as is common for these pieces. It features the also characteristic facial scarification marks which are part of almost all Yoruba art. The pigment is still relatively strong, with normal wear and exposure related marks in evidence. It does not appear to have undergone any breaks or repairs. This piece should make a nice addition to any collection. Dimensions are 19" tall x 3.5" x 2.5" It weighs just over one pound. MEDIUM: W

TIV FORGED IRON OIL LAMP W/Figure NIGERIA #2246 - For African Art Gallery
TIV FORGED IRON OIL LAMP#2246 Tribe: Tiv. Country: Nigeria. Material: Iron. Size: 20.25" 51.4 cm) Tall. Item: 2246 This Tiv forged iron oil-lamp with one pan and a figure was used to bring light. The Tiv came originally from Cameroon. And settled in the Benue region in Nigeria in the 17th century, affected, as most peoples were, by the intrusive and violent Muslim Fulani horsemen. The area where they settled, the small port of Makurdi, was a busy place for commerce, and the farthest point of penetration for the slave trade. At the time when the Tiv were moving into in the area, the slave trade relocated, concentrating instead on the larger populations of the Igbo and Ibibio. At some point the Tiv formed a buffer zone, forcing the smaller Idoma to move south. Though there is this well-documented written history, the Tiv prefer to believe ... morethat they originated in a mystical place called"Swem Mountian, though this region has yet to be located. The written history subsequent to the early 18th century is a complicated tale of alliances and uprisings. This is the case for many of the peoples in the Benue/Cross River region, which still today is rife with petty conflicts and political intrigue. by adding my eBay Store to your Favorites Check out my! This is a beautiful example of a diviners belt or kings belt from the Yoruba Tribe of Benin Nigeria. Each color of bead is associated with a different empowering God(Orisha) The face is Oduduwa. Yoruba Beaded Hen Figure Nigeria African Art
Title, Yoruba Beaded Hen Figure Nigeria African Art, Type of Object, Figure, Country of Origin, Nigeria, People, Yoruba, Materials, Beads. Fabric, wood, forged iron, unknown materials inside, Approximate Age, second half 20th century Dimensions, 18 inches H. x 18.5 inches W. Overall Condition, Good Damage/Repair, loose strands in feet. Visible traces of glue in some places, Yoruba Beaded Hen Figure. Nigeria African Additional Information: A Yoruba Hen figure nicely embellished with glass beads. This figure is decorated with typical yoruba patterns mostly in lozenge. Triangle and linear patterns. The symbolism of beaded figures in Yoruba culture is well explainedin their religion. Theoretically, only direct descendents of one of the sixteen children of the god ORISHA, first king of the Yoruba people, can wear them. ORISHA blessed mankind ... morewith the use of beads, and their use is restricted to those whose spiritual powers enable them to move across the boundary that separates men from gods, the secular from the sacred. The figure itself was probably placed on a family or individual shrine devoteed to an Orisha, which holds the power to protect the individual with his family. The hen couldd be associated with the birds. In almost all instances of Yoruba ritual art, birds are references to the mystical power of women, known affectionally as"awon iya wa" our mothers) or abusively as"aje" witches) As there are positive and negative valences to the mystical powers of women(and gods, spirits and ancestors) so too the substances guarded by the bird-mothers can either protect or destroy the person who wears the crown. Given the central role played by women in controlling, placing, protecting, and sacrificing to the crown, the birds signify that the king himself rules only with the support and cooperation of"awon iya wa. According to the Orangun-Ila: Without the mothers I could not rule. I could not have power over witchcraft in the town. Yoruba; Nine Centuries of African Art and Thought, by Henr

Both major deities in the Yoruba pantheon. Offerings would be made to her leading to the bowl held by the figure. The mother and child could have had a more public role appearing during festivals and religious ceremonies as Lawal(1996) reports similar figures being carried in a large bowl by a priestess who dances in a trance to celebrate the river goddess Yemoja who has the power to bestow children upon her devotees. Among the Yoruba of Nigeria sculpture in service to ritual and religion is integral to life whether used during divination or masks worn or figural sculptures that are found in shrines or carried during ceremonies. There is a large corpus of Yoruba sculpture known and identified as to symbol and meaning identified to the various orishas or deities. Yoruba traditional religion has a structured pantheon of the deities known as Orisha numbering between 400 and 700 individual Yoruba gods that may share powers and attributes that are articulated in sculptural form. Yoruba Olumeye offering bowl, African Tribal Creations maternity pot Nigeria art
An African Tribal Creations gallery Yoruba Olumeye Hospitality Offering Bowl For a great many in the African art collecting community. This culture need no introduction. The Yoruba people are the largest art producing ethnic group in Africa, and are renowned for their copious forms of artwork. A largely agrarian society, the Yoruba are distributed throughout Nigeria, Togo, and Benin, and number in the range of 12 million people. Their artistic interpretations of people are generally rendered in a realistic style, minus the exaggerated facial features, in contrast with many other African tribes which produce highly stylized, even surrealistic or impressionistic representations of the human form. A highly popular art-producing group among collectors, the Yoruba are known for their numerous and elaborate art forms as much as for their history ... moreof human sacrifice. Born exclusively from the desire to be hospitable. And fulfilling a secular and utilitarian function, the Olumeye bowl is a common artform that would be found in many a Yoruba home, used to store kola nuts for the enjoyment of visitors. The word'Olumeye' can be roughly translated to mean'one who knows honor/respect' and is commonly associated with the depiction of these figures in the kneeling position. Appearing in many forms, this particular piece takes on the form of a maternity theme, with a woman in the olumeye(kneeling) position with her infant child held in her hands before her. On the lid of the bowl is another standing figure depicted in the act of sacrificing a bird. This bowl is moderately large in stature, dense and heavy, and is beautifully pigmented across most of its surface. Though some of its color has faded with age, it is largely intact, and is a truly exceptional example of the artform. The figure and bowl are very elegantly carved, with plenty of fine detail, and the top fits nicely onto the bowl, a sign of good original craftsmanship. Upon the woman figure's back a small child has been carved, being carried in a clot

On both sides of the Niger River the Igbo number some ten million individuals. Mainly farmers and merchants, they also hunt and fish. They are subdivided into thirty-three subgroups and are spread out among about two hundred villages scattered through the thick forest or semifertile marshland. Only on the northern and western edges of the area, under influence from Igala and Benin, are hereditary rulers found. The heads of families form the council of elders, which shares its power with numerous secret societies. These societies exercise great political and social influence. They are highly hierarchical, their members passing from one level to the next. There is strong social pressure toward individual distinction, and men can move upward through successive grades by demonstrating their achievements and their generosity. The lack of overall centralization among the Igbo-speaking peoples has been conducive to the development of a great variety of art styles and cultural practices. The earliest sculpture known from Igboland is from the village of Ibo Ukwu, where the grave of
African tribal bronze sculpture ethnographic art Benin Nigeria Queen Mother
According to the YORUBA peoples myth of the origin of IFE it was the place where the Gods descended from the skies to populate the world. According to tradition when the first OBA(Benin King) died his head was sent to IFE for burial with IFE sending back a bronze head for the ancestors altar. Impressed by this creation Benin royalty beseech-ed the IFE king to send an artist who could teach the art of bronze work to Benin craftsmen. This began the tradition of Benin bronze work. This head measures 14.5" high by 7" deep and 7" wide. The exact age is unknown but thought to be early 20th century however could date back as far as the 18th or 19th century.
