Overall Condition, Fair, Damage/Repair, foot broken with missing toes and chip. age cracks thoughout the figure crack in one foot. Minor old chips in places. Additional Information: A Janus Reliquary Figure(Byeri Figures) from the Fang people(Ntumu Sub-group Northern Fang) Equatorial Guinea. This Janus guardian figure is not often noted among the Fang, although early reports mention male-female reliquary figures on shrines. This is a Very strong sculpture with a lot of presence! As sculpture. These Byeri figures stand out as a fine example of good carving in a later Fang style, and the sculptural detail is testament to the Fang artist who shaped them. Fang memorial sculpture has a long history of use and was in fact photographed as early as 1907(Tessmann 1913/1972, vol. II) However the cult of Byeri began to lose its prominence after 1910 due to colonial government pressure. During migrations which took place in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the Fang people moved to their present area becoming part of a complex overlay of population of approximately 200,000 which stretches from southern Cameroon into Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. Living in small forest communities, the Fang focused upon tightly knit kinship and lineage systems. Stressing continuity and relationships, the kinship system was employed to emphasize the veneration of ancestors through the use of figurative sculptures. Each lineage's ancestors were located in family shrines, housing memorials or reliquary boxes known as byeri, containing their bones, under the care of an elder known as the Esa. The ancestors were consulted before any serious event such as hunting, traveling, marriage, war, or planting was undertaken. The Esa, the shrine keeper, was the oldest living member of the clan

(Ancestrial) Night Helmet/Mask Cameroon African
This Night mask/helmet has been in storage and has not been offered anywhere, until now. Made of wood. It comes from Cameroon Grasslands and it's age is most likely from the mid 20th century. It could be much older; but, I do not know for sure) The lines of this piece are distinct while the expression is absolutely subjective. It is in overall Excellent condition with indigenous insect damage and negligible cracks(see pictures) from drying over time. Indicating its authenticity. Encrustation is obvious, as was a common practice. This is possibly an'ancestrial mask' As it depicts a defined face without a lot of ornamentation. Some of these statues were placed on tombs to aid the spirits of the dead to join the world of the deceased. Wood sculptures represent royal wives. Hunters, musicians, and healers. Fang Ngil mask, Gabon, African Tribal Creations, Art, Gorilla, Pangwe, Cameroon
An African Tribal Creations gallery NO RESERVE AUCTION This NO RESERVE auction is for a large and beautiful(if a bit unsettling) Fang Ngil mask. Hailing from Gabon. Cameroon, and Equatorial Guinea, the Fang people were historically a migrant people, but are now settled in the wide aforementioned region, and are nearly one million strong in number. Prolific producers of art, the fang are most commonly known in the art collecting community for their imposing'Ngil' or'Gorilla' masks that generally feature a characteristically elongated form, usually white(kaolin) pigmentation with black or otherwise darkly highlighted facial features, and which are generally associated with judicial connotations. The also, however, produce a wide variety of figures, musical instruments, and artistically rendered functional items. Worn by members ... moreof an eponymous society. The Ngil mask is a large, imposing, instantly recognizable artform among the Fang people. Though the Ngil society is no longer practiced among the Fang people, its masks still find their way into the marketplace, and are generally highly sought after. The Ngil mask would be used to initiate new members into its society, but it was most frequently used in the finding and punishing of criminals and sorcerers within the village community. The masks were said to have only appeared after dark. This large, impressive, and imposing Fang mask features the traditional stylistic cues, as well as the archetypical facial features and kaolin pigmentation. Despite a single hole that exists above the right eye, which appears very old and is completely naturalized into the piece, this object is in fairly good condition. It displays normal signs of wear, exposure and age, including faded pigment, scuffs and scratches, etc. all of which should be considered normal. There is also a chip from the lower right side of the mask's perimeter. From the back hangs a piece of fiber cloth, though the rest of the masquerader would be dressed in a Raffia costume. This is a siza

Authentic antique wooden carved and painted African Elephant Mask, Cameroon
Really intriguing and very interesting piece of aboriginal Art. This Mask originates from the Cameroon region in Africa. It's a very old piece although the exact age is unknown it shows lots of wear and really has a lot of character. It's in great condition. Looks absolutely beautiful. There was a crack on the right side of the horn, could even have been a very old repair, also the top of the trunk seems to be chipped or a small piece could have been broken off, but due to the darkening in the wood its not visible. These masks would have be used for funerals and festivities. This piece measures approx. 15" in height. 6" wide and 4.5" deep. Note to international buyers(other than US) Please contact me for shipping costs. They vary between $20- 90 CAD depending on country.

Sophistication in war, government, ... moreindustry and the arts, the old Tikar dynasties dominated Central and West Africa for at least three centuries before their decline in the nineteenth century. We estimate that there were more than one million Tikar people. Today there are less than 100000 in the French-speaking zone and 300000 in the English-speaking zone(Banso) They obviously met the criteria for“good slaves. They were attractive, learned quickly and had a tradition of slavery with-in their own society. As the Tikar people attempted to abandon their traditional grassy savannahs and the plains where they were easy slave trade targets with no natural protection, they were forced to leave their villages, with slave traders on the one side and four hostile tribes on the other side, seeking revenge. One of the strategies they applied to fight off the enemy was to dig moats around villages; these still exist in at least five kingdoms. However this strategy failed and the survivors found refuge in the forest. The slave trade during this drained their brightest and most physically fit young people. Having been weakened by war and the slave trade, they became vulnerable to neighboring tribes who had been subjected

African Tribal Buffalo Mask - 22 x10 inch Bamileke Bamun Cameroon Grasslands
This is fine example of an Bamileke Buffalo or bush bull mask. This would have been worn by the"fon" or tribal leader during agricultural rites. It is made of wood. Has exaggeratedly carved teeth, flaring nostrils and large horns. It is decorated with white pigment. The size is roughly 21 inches from the top of the horns to the mouth and roughly 10 inches across. Is it three dimensional as can be seen in the photos. I acquired this from a well known psychologist who did chimpanzee research for 45 years. He told me that he had personally brought it back from Africa in the 1970s. if you email me I will tell you which one. I have bought and sold masks from many cultures over the years and- although I am not claiming to be an expert- this one is well constructed and has a true patina of age. It is museum quality and not one of the"trade" ... moremasks that are sold at the airports. There is one spot of house paint on the inside. Probably due to it having been hung on the wall for so long. I did not attempt to remove it so as not to risk damaging the mask.

Particularly Ogoni pieces. We are very proud to have bought his collection. Additional Information An impressive mask probably from the Bafo people. Few examples of masks have been identified from the Bafo people of Cameroon living south west of the escarpment of the Grasslands. A relatively small grouping. Their art is not well known however they do use figures and masks. This wonderfully ... moreexpressive mask is a variant on a published example and is an extraordinary sculpture. The aggressive teeth dominate the mask with the round pierced eyes providing more expression to the face. The eyes had small holes drilled in them so that the dancer could see and a hole was drilled on either side of the mask to attach a cord to hold the mask on the face. Color plays a strong role in defining the forms. This is an uncommon mask and would certainly add a powerful presence to a collection. Masks such as this were tied to the kingship and were worn by dignitaries members of the chief's family during ceremonies associated with the kingship. N’Kem / Ngoin Mask - Bamelike / Bamun peoples, Cameroon Grasslands
N’Kem/ Ngoin Mask– Bamelike/ Bamun peoples. Cameroon Grasslands N’Kem masks appeared during commemoration for deceased members of the Kwifoyn Society. The extended jowls signify age and dignity. The lizard was believed to inhabit two worlds. Above and below ground. Bekom, Big Babanki, Ndop, Okuand others) The male dancer’s head is concealed by a thin cloth; his costume consists of a loose garment of cotton fabric which is often dyed bluish-white. This royal headdress is known as The Ndam Tcheu Dop in the Bamenda region. And as Tcho Dung Dung in the Bandjan region of Cameroon. It is the coiffure most commonly reproduced by sculptures when creating their masks and commemorative statues. Its origin is from a royal cap knitted or crocheted from raffia or vegetable fibers that features two lobes or prominent lateral sections. Each lobe is spiked with a multitude of tails. Bumps, blades, or tiny rolls of cloth, each concealing a slim wooden peg to stiffen it or keep it upright. Condition(see photos) This aged. Three-dimensional mask is a superbly carved example. CAMEROON GRASSLANDS ORNAMENTAL BRONZE HIP MASK
The Cameroon Grasslands is a large cultural area. Which is inhabited by a large number of related peoples. These peoples can be divided into three smaller subgroups: Bamilike, Bamum, and Bamenda Tikar. Within these complexes there are numerous smaller ethnic groups, which are loosely affiliated with one another and share many historical and political similarities while retaining separate identities. All members of this group originally came from an area to the north and migrated in various complex patterns throughout the last several centuries. Fulani traders moving steadily southwards into Cameroon in the 17th century forced the southern drift of most of the current residents. Many smaller groups combined, while other factions split away as a result of pressure from the invading Fulani. All of the peoples who make up the Cameroon Grasslands ... moreculture area pay allegiance to the chief(Fon) Each village is governed by a leader who is selected by his predecessor and who is usually the head of the dominant lineage within that community. Each Fon is served by a council of elders who advise him on all important decisions and who also play an important role in the selection of the next Fon. Most chiefs serve for a lifetime. Abdicating the throne or stool only when nearing death. Complex age-grade societies also help to structure the community. The Fon also oversees these secret societies. In a typical grasslands community. A large percentage of the population was considered noble. Commoners had no claim to any art, which was used exclusively by the king and, by his grace, the nobility. The ornamental bronze mask shown here is representative of the art pieces used as a means of bolstering the authority of the elite.
