These figures were used by trance diviners known as komien and were kept in a shrine in the diviner’s house where the spirit of the bush could inhabit or metaphorically‘sit’ on the figure. In addition to the idealized beauty of this figure other shrine objects are not carved and may be simple daubs of clay or pans filled with magical substances or roughly shaped figures. In its ritual context, the figure would be covered with white pigment representing other worldliness or spirituality. Diviners will perform in public where the spirit will possess them or will advise clients in private close by their shrine. Attention is focused upon the head with emphasis given to the well-carved details of the face with arched eyebrows. Rounded forehead and well-shaped mouth. The figure is holding a well-carved stool with diamond and other patterns simil
Stool (Dwa) Akan (Asante, Fante) Ghana African SALE Was $350
Title, Stool(Dwa) Akan(Asante) Ghana, African, Type of Object, Stool, Country of Origin, Ghana, People, Akan(Asante) Materials, Wood, Approximate Age, Mid 20th century, Dimensions, Height: 23 inches. Width: 23 inches. Depth 16.5 inches. Overall Condition, Fair, Damage/Repair, large cracks in legs. Stain, Additional Information: Magnificent stool. Among the Akan a well-carved stool such as this serves multiple purposes in addition to providing a well-designed seat to sit upon. Among the Akan stools take their name Dwa from the wood out of which they are carved. When a daughter reaches the age of puberty her father is expected to give her stool that becomes not only her property but also identification with her soul and being. So that often stools will be seen with their upper corners worn from being leaned up against the wall or laid down ... moreon their sides. All to prevent some one else from sitting on it or worse a malevolent spirit could take charge of the stool and the owner's spirit. Stools are also identified with the various royal states as each state will have it s own design as will their king and queen mother. Stools often have proverbs or sayings or historical events identified to them in fact the skulls of defeated enemies were often attached to the stools of a victorious king! Stools start out as a white wood and through time take on a burnished and well-worn hue as this stool and it must be noted that Akan stools are carved from a single piece of wood reflecting the skill and talent of the stool carvers and not nailed together as European chairs. Designs of stools may vary as to the inventiveness of the stool carver and today many of the proverbial forms are either forgotten or interpreted as a new form. Niangi Batulukisi. Bamileke Bamun Stool Large Cameroon African
Title, Bamileke/Bamun/Wum Stool Cameroon African, Type of Object, Stool, Country of Origin, Cameroon, People, Bamileke. Bamun or Wum, Materials, Wood, Approximate Age, Second Half 20th century, Dimensions, 12 inches x 14 inches top; Stool Height: 15.5 inches Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, cracks at top and in base. Scratches, old insect damage, chip damage on bottom, Additional Information: This wonderfully carved circular stool supported with strong structure in the center comes from the Cameroon Grasslands region. Cameroon is a large country with mountainous terrain. Broad savannas and grasslands where a number of centralized kingdoms or chiefdoms have developed each with distinctive individual art traditions while sharing common religious beliefs, political structures and social institutions. Grasslands art serves to indicate ... moresocial status and rank with the most prestigious imagery and material reserved for the king(Fon) and other nobility diminishing in importance as one moves downwards in rank at court. Certain artists and artisans working close by the palace serve the king working in materials and symbols reserved exclusively for him. Ranging from royal regalia of high prestige to objects of everyday usage most were embellished with either simple designs or complex imagery including human and animal images symbolically identified with kingship. Seated upon his stool the king embodies political power and ritual authority with strength and leadership visually reinforced by the image of the buffalo. This stool could well deserve a place in any collection. Today. Such as stool can also be used as a nice low table. Recommended Reading: R. Dogon Stool, Mali, Burkina Faso, African Tribal Creations, art door, chair nommo
An African Tribal Creations gallery Dogon Nommo Stool The Dogon are a people numbering near the 400.000 mark in the Mali and Burkina Faso region. Well known for their intricately carved doors, they settled the region of their inhabitance after fleeing persecution of their indigenous religious beliefs from the invading Muslims population to the north. Because of their resulting isolation, they have preserved many of their traditional art production methods, and are masters of producing artistic functional objects. Their art is highly versatile, and exhibits themes from their lifestyle, surroundings, and their cultural mythology. They produce a wide variety of masks and figures in addition to their famous doors, and their art has become quite popular amongst collectors. This beautiful stool is finely adorned and detailed. And was collected ... morefrom the Mali region of the Dogon's native territory. The figures present on them are believed to have spiritual power, and are intended to protect the contents of the room and its owner. This stool features a great number of Nommo figures, protective figures representative of the earliest ancestors in Dogon mythology. They are said to have been bisexual water gods, created by the ultimate god Amma, and sent to Earth in an ark, where they then founded the Dogon family lineages and introduced various activities, such as smithing, farming, etc. The stool is in good condition, displaying the normal age and wear-related rub marks, scratches, etc. It's upper surface is decorated with a finely hand hammered sheet of metal. It also bears a faded and worn greenish pigment on much of its surface. A very nice and uncommon piece ready to be added to your collection! Dimensions are 16.5" tall x 8" in diameter. It weighs in at three and a half pounds. MEDIUM: Wood. Pigment, Metal Here's your chance to help us give back! African Tribal Creations Gallery presents. An Ashanti Maternity Figure Normal.dotm 0 0 1 154 879 Full Sail 7 1 1079 12.0 0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false Numbering nearly 2 million people. The Ashanti, or Asante, of Ghana are a widespread people in the southern portion of the country, and belong to the Akan conglomerate of ethnic groups. Most famous for their elaborate stools, which are carved for each member of the Ashanti society, they are capable craftsman, producing both fine metalwork via the lost wax casting method, and highly detailed woodwork, from maternity figures, to stools, to household items, to their internationally renowned"acua'ba" fertility dolls. The honored deceased are also commemorated with fired ceramic head busts. Once one of the larger pre-colonial empires of West Africa, the Ashanti make up ... morea very large percentage of the population of their region still today. The maternity figure itself is an extremely important form of art produced throughout much of the African continent. And a form of this figure can be found in the majority of art producing ethnic groups. Some are rendered as part animal, some strictly human. Some are produced as clear representations, some are highly abstract. They are carved from wood and cast in metal. To the African woman, motherhood is the single most important role in life. An absolutely outstanding maternity figure. The woman depicted in this piece was incredibly fortunate by African standards, being covered at every angle by children! Bearing the famous circular disc-shaped head of the Acua'ba doll which is characteristically associated with Ashanti fertility motifs, this mother displays the good fortune of having five healthy children, one seated on each knee, one clinging to each leg, and one clutching her back. On the face is depicted a traditionally graceful and serene expression, and she exhibits rings around her neck; indications of fat rolls, a common sign of prosperity among many African nations. Around perimeter of her head

Burkina Faso, Mali, and Ghana, the Senufo are revered among African art collectors, if only for a single mask known as the Kponyungo or Firespitter mask. They are, however, prolific art producers, making a number of exquisite masks and figures, as well as functional items including doors and stools that are beautifully embellished. Minimal hunters and fishers, they are primarily an agrarian society both growing crops and keeping small domesticated livestock. The community is structured around the poro society. To which all adult men belong. This society is responsible for maintaining the religious, artistic, and historical traditions of a lineage, ... moreand it is for this society that the majority of Senufo art is created. Masters of woodwork, the Senufo produce some spectacular functional objects, as well as their beautiful traditional art. Among the Senufo people. Functional objects are often paid special attention, indeed often taking on the same level of artistic merit as the traditional objects for which they are certainly more famous. Chairs and stool are commonly produced and often make integral parts of the home, especially among those in higher standing within the community. This very dense and graceful chair has been produced from a single log, and we are certain that it has seen real world use. The chair was purchased from a family in the Ghana portion of the Senufo's territory. It demonstrates substantial wear, use, and age marks, but is in good condition, largely due to its exceptionally sturdy construction. The chair does not appear to have undergone any breaks or repairs, and is more than capable of holding the weight of an adult man. This is an outstanding example of a functional item from the Senufo people, and will undoubtedly make a remarkable addition to a collection! Dimensions are 28.5" x 14&
Dogon Stool with Figural Pillars in Centre Mali African
Title, Dogon Stool with Figural Pillars in Centre Mali African Type of Object, Stool, Country of Origin, Mali, People, Dogon, Materials, wood, Approximate Age, Second half 20th century, Dimensions, 9 inches H. x 6.25 inches W. Overall Condition, poor, Damage/Repair, large cracks in seat and in base. Chips in places, A Dogon stool with cylindrical seat and base. The center is decorated with figural"three pillars decorated with carved figures. This stool was also used as a shrine piece. The oral tradition of the Dogon tells us that they originated on the west bank of the Niger River about 1000 years ago. They moved west at some point. Into parts of what is now Mossi territory in Burkina Faso, but chose to return east due to pressure to assimilate into the Mossi Kingdom. This time, around 1500, they found a place almost unreachable by invaders ... moreon horseback-the arid but imposing Bandiagara Cliffs. Here most of the Dogon have remained to this day, as one of Africa's most spiritual people. Dogon family dwellings, as well as their shrines and granaries, are constructed in a uniquely haunting way, leaving even the most jaded observer spellbound, in what can only be described as a"magic kingdom. The Dogon have taken the time-honored worship of ancestors to new heights, and their huge pantheon of astounding and colorful carvings reflect this. It is possible today for tourists and scholars to arrange masked dances for public view, but these dances are for entertainment only, and only a few of the art-forms are actually revealed. Ritually meaningful ceremonies are not shared with the public. The Dogon have even made their funerals a unique spectacle. Accompanied by the chanting of Binu priests, the body is reportedly lowered over the jagged cliffs into its final resting place, as dancers venerate the life of the deceased. Quite a way to enter the heavens! The important PBS series"Africa" did a beautiful segment on the Dogon and Fulani. 69187* All content. Including pictures, Copyright Africa Direct In

And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, Stain. Worn patina, cracks between breasts and in base, Senufo Female Figure Seated on a Stool. Africa Additional Information: This female figure is sitting on four-leg circular stool. ... moreThe figure's legs extend the front legs of the stool. The figure is carving in the stylistic lines of the Senufo. This figure wears a necklace and a waist belt made of rope. Senufo figures were used during different ceremonies and unless one knows the specific context of the figure it is often difficult to name the specific use and name of the figure. However what is presented is a mature woman recognized here by her breasts. Facial expression, body scarification, and hairstyle. Figures such as this may have been commissioned by the male ‘Poro Society’ or the female ‘Tykpa(Tykepa) Society, both which were concerned with initiations, funerals and social control. She may also have been a Yasungo, a shrine figure or one of a male-female pair representing the first couple known as ‘Kasingele’. What ever her use and appearance she is a strongly carved figure in a local style that is typical of Senufo forms. Recommended Reading: Kerchache's ART OF AFRICA. Picasso, Modigliani, Deraini, to mention only a few, had collected African art and had been profoundly influenced by it. Shortly afterwards I bought the Baule Fetish and the Baule bobbin which are still two of the finest pieces in my collection. It is easy to see why I bought them and why from that moment I have never stopped collecting. The head of the bobbin or heddle- pulley which is after all only a functional object for the purpose of weaving seemed to me then and today as beautiful as a Greek goddess. The fetish moved me as deeply as the bobbin by its silent tragic dignity and its air of profound meditation. Fante Asafo Flag with Double-Headed Monster on Stool Ghana African Textile

Damage/Repair, A couple of stains through use, Additional Information: Among the Fante people of coastal Ghana military companies known as Asafo. Began in the past as groups to which men and in some instances women could belong. Most Fante coastal towns had at least one company and larger towns up to ten or fourteen leading to rivalries and conflicts. These companies were politically engaged in the selection of chiefs and identified religiously to their particular military shrine(pousban) that served as a gathering place and centers of activity for these Asafo companies. Asafo flags have a rough system that can be used to define the date of origin with the British ensign often featured on flags before Ghana achieved independence in 1957. Therefore Asafo flags with the Ghanaian ensign in one of the corners indicate that the flag was put together post-independence and thereby after 1957. Much of Asafo flag imagery plays upon traditional proverbs or on popular sayings and subtle references to local histories and personalities. However there are times when it is difficult to interpret the visual representation due to hidden meanings and idiosyncratic communication. The double-headed man appears si

Among the Asante an elaborate stool like ... morethis serves multiple purposes in addition to providing a well-designed seat to sit upon. Asante stools take their name Dwa from the wood out of which they are carved. When a daughter reaches the age of puberty her father is expected to give her stool that becomes not only her property but also identification with her soul and being. So that often stools will be seen with their upper corners worn from being leaned up against the wall or laid down on their sides. Makonde Caryatid Stool with Couple of Kneeling Figures African
Title, Makonde Caryatid Stool with Couple of Kneeling Figures African Type of Object, Stool, Country of Origin, DR Congo, People, Makonde, Materials, Wood. pigment, Approximate Age, Second half 20th century, Dimensions, 11.25 inches x 10.75 inches W. Overall Condition, Fair. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, broken base but stands well. Age cracks, chips and scratches Additional Information: The Makonde of Tanzania and Mozambique are some of ... morethe most prolific art producing peoples in eastern Africa. This beautifully carved stool is supported by a couple of kneeling figures. Makonde style is recognized here by the facial scarification patterns often found on masks and figures and interpreted as an indicaton of mature status of man and woman spirit represented. The male anfemale figures represent the primordial ancesters. Early Makonde myths tell that the first man on earth was alone and made a figure of a woman out of wood and after he slept the sculpture had turned into a real woman to accompany him in his journey. Therefore women are honored as sculptured figures. The carving of the figure with its symmetrical balance of scarification patterns to a well-defined face reflects the carver’s sensibility to balance the symbolic imagery of the figure and natural representation. Besides its fair condition this stool remains an interesting and classic Makonde piece that would standout in any collection. 74824* All content.
