The Dan are an ethnic group located in the West African countries of Liberia and Côte d'Ivoire. There are approximately 350.000 members of the group, united by the Dan language, a Mande language. Neighboring peoples include the Guere, Guro and Mano. According to tradition. The Dan and other Mande-speaking peoples migrated from North Africa to the present-day Mali and Guinea several hundred years ago and then into their current locations in Liberia and the Ivory Coast, invading the coastal region, replacing some of the Atlantic tribes and pushing back the Kru. Their waring skills were and strategies were more superior to those tribes they conquered from East Africa to today West Africa-specifically, Nimba County, Liberia. In the midst of migration, as some members of the Dan tribe also known as Beta Israel, many cultural practices changed over time. Some of their chief warriors were: Grougbay Zobaneeay who fought and pushed the tribes that once live in the present day Nimba County. To as far as Loguatuo in Côte d'Ivoire. German Bakelite Radio WW2 Volksempfanger VE301 Dyn by H.Mende & Co Dresden
This is an original German Bakelite Radio World War II Volksempfanger VE301 Dyn by H. Mende& Co Dresden in excellent condition! This is one of the radios that were heralded by the propaganda ministry as a necessary tool to enlighten the people! I had recently purchased it from Germany for use in a possible independent film or theater stage play as a key prop in the script’s performance. The cabinet is in excellent shape. Very clean, the glass station guide is intact, and tuning knobs all function. The man I purchased it from in Germany said it works, but I am unable to try it due to the European or German style plug and would need and adapter of some sort. Mende Helmet Mask, Sande Society, Liberia, African Tribal Creations, Bundu, art
An African Tribal Creations gallery Mende Sande Society Bundu Helmet Mask This auction is for a Mende Sande Society Mask. The Mende people are indigenous to Sierra Leone and Liberia. And number nearly 2 million strong. One of the most famous of all African masks, the Mende Sowo helmet masks of the Sande Society are known in African art circles across the world. They are unique due to the fact that in Africa, they are one of and perhaps THE only masks controlled and danced exclusively by women. The Sande society controls the social and political concerns of women in the region, which includes Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Liberia. They are known to practice genital mutilation of their initiates, and are fiercely protective of the secretive nature of the society. Or on and around the head like a helmet, the masks are representations of the idealized female form, and traditionally display a number of symbolic features. The eyes are in a downcast gaze symbolizing modesty, and the facial features are small and centralized, including the eyes, mouth, and nose. Elaborate hairstyling is common, and is finely detailed in this mask. Scarification marks are common, and present on this piece. The dark patina is said to represent female mystery. This mask is a beautiful example, with a very rich, brown-black patina, and finely rendered carving details. The coiffure is exquisite, tall and elegant, crowning in a decorative loop. It demonstrates normal aging signs, and standard dings, rubs, and scratches from wear and handling, but no serious damage, breaks, or repairs. Please examine the photos for details, and never hesitate to ask any questions! The mask is quite dense, and certainly visually impressive. Offered for your consideration… African Helmet Mask Decorated with raffia hair. Cowrie shells, beads Ì Description: This auction is for an African helmet mask. Democratic Republic of Congo, and Zambia. Condition: This mask is in very good vintage condition. The condition issues are twofold: there is a crack in the wooden face that has been repaired(pictured) and(probably due to careless storage previously) the straw“hair” is flatter on one side than the other. Thank you for considering adding this piece to your collection! Terms The most important thing to me in doing this work is your satisfaction with the goods and services you’ve received from me. The Mende are farmers who grow rice, yams, peanuts, and cocoa and who collect palm oil. The Mende are best known for black, helmet-shaped masks, named sowei or bundu used by the sande society, in particular, during the initiating girls. The initiates learn wisdom, beauty, grace, and self-control, all of which they will need within the multigenerational, polygamous households of their future husbands. Mende African Helmet Double Face Mask Sande Society Bundu Art
This African Mende Helmet Mask is in Very Good Condition. It does have a small damaged spot along the lower edge but otherwise the wood surface has a great looking aged patina and the mask is well carved. The details in the hair and the top labia is beautifully done. The mask is double sided. My first two photos show both faces. The damaged spot along the lower edge is on the side between the two faces so the mask still displays quite nicely. The mask is 8.5 inches in diameter by 12 inches tall. Thanks for looking.

Having migrated from the north. Today, the Mende live mostly from rice and cocoa farming and are organized into different chiefdoms. Social order and structure are regulated through the Poro male and the Sande female societies. During ceremonies associated with the latter, women wear Bundu masks which embody idealized female beauty and represent an ancestor of the society. These masks are typically of helmet hollow form with elaborate coiffure. The facial features are delicately carved with multiple folds on the neck area representing robustness of health and wealth. The surface of these mask are usually of blacken finish. Painter Fred Uhlman words- Most of the artists I admired. Picasso, Modigliani, Deraini, to mention only a few, had collected African art and had been profoundly influenced by it. Shortly afterwards I bought the Baule Fetish and the Baule bobbin which are still two of the finest pieces in my collection. This is an area in which the women s initiation and social regulatory society known as Bundu among the Temne and Sande among the Mende people serves as a strong social force initiating young girls and exercising social control. The gender of this figure is unclear. It seems lke it has a beard designed with fine incisions. If this figure were part of Temne Bundu rituals and initiations it would have been owned by a senior member of the Bundu Society and brought out to be present at the initiations of young girls serving as a symbol of perfection and behavior that they were to model themselves after. Figures such as this were used by the Sande Society to cure illnesses. Temne figures served primarily aesthetic functions in that they would add prestige to an owner in decorating houses of prosperous men. Her finial hairstyle is beautifully rendered as it would have been in real life indicating her status as a mature woman of membership in Sande The well-carved face certainly has characteristics so
Mende Sande Society mask, estate sale purchase
A charming Mende Sande Society helmet mask. The Sande is a secret women's society among the Mende and other related peoples in Sierra Leone and Liberia. And these masks are used in conjunction with the initiation of girls. They are the only wooden masks in Africa specifically made to be worn by women, and represent Mende ideals of female beauty. This example has very thin walls and, in the interior, a"medicine hole" to receive the libations poured into the interior of the mask to give it power. I bought this piece from a New York City antique dealer, who got it from an estate auction. There is some damage to one side of the piece, which has been repaired(see pictures) The mask measures 14 inches tall, 7 3/4 inches across and 8 1/2 inches deep. International bidders are welcome. But its simplicity in the design and irs omplexity in decoration may be an indicator that this cloth was produced by the Bamana of Mali. Peoples in West Africa including the Mende. Dogon, and Senufo are also known as master-weavers in the production of such textiles. Such textiles were used as prestige clothes worn by the hunters. Collectors love this kind of textiles since they almost always have a fascinating array of protective and"good-luck" amulets attached to their surface. Ours is no exception. As we find cowrie shells, metal bells and multiple small fetish packets, filled with unknown materials, to ensure a successful hunt. The artistic diversity of the Bamana is without doubt one of the most astounding, and confounding, of all West African groups. Like their western neighbors the Dogon, complex religious, funerary, initiation, and agricultural rites have resulted in an enormous pantheon of ritual objects.
