You are bidding on a Beautiful and OLD BAULE PEOPLE Carved Wood Urn with Seated Male Figure. With Amazing Design Details, from Cote D'Ivoire. The ... moreBaule create art in several media. Including wooden sculpture, gold and brass casting similar to their Asante ancestors, and mask and figure carving, which have been greatly influenced by their Senufo and Guro neighbors. The Baule belong to the Akan peoples who inhabit Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. Three hundred years ago the Baule people migrated westward from Ghana when the Asante rose to power. The tale of how they broke away from the Asante has been preserved in their oral traditions. During the Asante rise to power the Baule queen. Aura Poku, was in direct competition with the current Asante king. When the Asante prevailed, the queen led her people away to the land they now occupy. The male descendant of Aura Poku still lives in the palace she established and is honored by the Baule as their nominal king. Religion includes both ancestor worship and a heirarchy of nature gods. Nature spirits and spirit spouses are often represented in sculpture. Their creator god is Alouroua. Who is never physically represented. Damage/Repair, A wonderful male ancestor figure holding his beard as an indicator of high rank and status in this world and in the spirit world! Baule Male Standing Figure Cote d'Ivoire African Art. The elaborate markings on their bodies front and back and their faces allied to the complexity and detail of the hair enhances their presentation as personages of high rank and social status. Facial features and hair are especially detailed. The figure finely balanced and the well-finished surface reflect Baule sensibilities of representation and aesthetics. This figure was used as an ancestor figure or a spirit of other world. In fact. Baule carved figures are known generally as waka sran, meaning a"person of wood”. Such sculptures have multiple purposes and uses. They fall into two categories, the first represents the spirits of the wild(Asie Usu) that live in the bush beyond village boundaries. Figures of this category are owned by diviners known as Komien, who can read the future, heal as well as solve his client problems. The priest communicates with these spirits through such figures also considered as receptacles of spirits. Our piece may belong to this category because of the importance of encrusted sacrificial material on its surface. The second category of statues is composed of male and female figures that represent ‘spirit world’ spouses for their owners.

Baule figures might represent the wild spirits(asie usu) that live in the bush beyond village boundaries and or the ‘spirit world’ spouses. The spirit lover figures are known as ‘Blolo Bla’. Though representing bush spirits the asie usu are shown as wild spirits in beautiful bodies. Old Unique Tribal Monkey Figure Statue Maybe Baule Anatomically Correct Antique
Up for bid is this very interesting old monkey statue with a nice patina. I purchased it at an antique flea market many years ago and am cleaning out some of my collection of vintage and antiques. I do not know anything about it other than what I am making guesses about after doing some research online. Please view all of the photos and make your own determination about where it is from and how old it is. I really just don't know. I just bought it because I liked it. All that being said after looking around online it seems to resemble the Baule Mbra statues from the Ivory Coast of Africa. Tribal art or something Pre Columbian although I'm not sure if they used metal such as this in their work. The examples of these I found were similar with the protruding teeth and wild looking eyes. He is seated with his paws on his knees, he appears ... moreto be anatomically correct. He has stylized circular eyes and a tail winding up his back. He is very unique and appears to be quite old although I am unsure of his age. It is made from a metal but I am not sure what type. It seems to be hollow inside so I'm not sure if it was cast or formed some other way. I suspect it's iron but it could easily be some other type of metal; it weighs close to 4 ounces. He measures approximately 3" tall x 2" long from tail to toe and about 2" wide. He does have some corrosion going on and has small holes that have formed here and there. I took pictures of them. Please view these as they offer the best description of his condition. As I mentioned he is hollow and there is a small hole on the bottom. When you shake him sand and dirt falls out. When I purchased him I didn't clean him I just put him on my shelf he is as found. Please view all the photos before bidding. Feel free to ask me any questions you may have. A neat piece for your collection for sure. Shipping is to the U.S. only. 1.RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fuk.rp73%28b0g%60%60%3E1-13e0b608909-0xf4-

Damage/Repair, A wonderful male ancestor figure holding his beard as an indicator of high rank and status in this world and in the spirit world! Baule Male Standing Figure Cote d'Ivoire African Art. The elaborate markings ... moreon their bodies front and back and their faces allied to the complexity and detail of the hair enhances their presentation as personages of high rank and social status.
BAULE MATERNITY FIGURE - WAKA SRAN
This seated figure of a woman with two children on her knee comes from a shrine somewhere among the Baule of Ivory Coast. The figure seats on an simply carved stool. There are remains of dust and obvious wear indicates long use and substantial age for this wooden figure. Classically carved figures such as this mother and child among the Baule are known generally as waka sran. Meaning a'person of wood' Some maternity sculptures were owned by diviners known as Komien, who could tell the future; cure illnesses as well as solving local community problems. The figure embodies a number of symbolic elements as shrine figure; she is a’mother’ and for the diviner she is a place of residence for the spirit of the bush to reside ready to be called upon by the diviner. Advised by the bush spirit(asye usu) the diviner will determine the reason ... morethat a woman is barren and direct her as to what she must do bear children. It is the energy and power of the bush spirits that create and give life that are contacted by the diviner and directed to the woman. This well carved figure exhibits typical Baule concern with the aesthetics of the presentation of the beauty of the women and child. Her hair is carefully combed and modeled and scarification on her chest, abdomen, neck and face show her as a mature and prominent woman of her village. This fine example measures 16“ tall and 7“ wide and will be shipped on this custom wooden stand.

Stunning, seated female Baule figure. Ivory Coast, West Africa.
For auction is this stunning. Old Baule seated figure that is part of a superb adult male and female couple. TheBaule The Baules are an ethnic group now indigenous to Ivory Coast but originally part of the Akan people from Neighbouring Ghana who migrated to Ivory Coast led their by their Queen. Awura Pokou, who lost out against other leaders in a power struggle in the old Ashanti kingdom of Ghana. The Baules are known for their fine sculpted work which is extremely detailed. Life-like and with almost an obsessive attention to detail. Their work remains very collectible and much sought-after for that reason. They also make items for everyday use such as furniture, cooking utensils, musical instruments etc. This Figure This seated female figure. As stated earlier, is part of a pair consisting of a male and female Baule couple. This is simply ... morea stunning item that is undoubtedly old, tribally created and the work of a very accomplished and highly skilled Baule artisan. I have had this figure professionally examined and it is established, by the principal curator of a West African museum board, that this is an authentic and old Baule creation. Due to age. There are many stable cracks with some being quite large and pronounced. The base has suffered extensive degradation but the upper part of the figure is sound. The raised scarification, to face and torso, are ethnographically relevant. Coiffure is elaborate. This beautiful item is then complemented with a lovely patina acquired with the aging of the wood. Simply a superb item of museum quality. An excellent an unique item now offered for collection. Measurement 37cm high. 16cm wide and around 17cm deep. This item was imported from West Africa. It has been vetted. Logged and cleared for shippment out of West Africa by an authorised West African museum and monument board. Thank you for looking.

FINE OLD BAULE MALE FIGURE 1950’s WEATHERED PATINA OLD BEAD NECKLACE
0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false Description: This finely carved male Baule figure from the Ivory Coast dates to about the 1950’s or a bit earlier. The carving has a sensitively carved face. Well-articulated fingers and toes as well as an exceptionally detailed hair style. The figure's male genitals are partially covered by a loin cloth. An old beaded necklace with a gold-like nugget hangs around its neck. As with many tribal pieces from European collections of this era(2 nd quarter to mid-20 th century) this statue has been covered with varnish– a now almost outdated practice which was probably originally instituted for wood preservation purposes. I believe this piece was originally from an old English collection– which would explain the varnish. If anything. This overall covering has worked to effectively showcase the piece’s ... moreweathered surface by outlining its worn-down wood grain. Please note that this statue is mounted on a substantial block of beautifully-grained burled wood which is included in the auction. Baule standing female figure, spirit wife, Blolo Bla.
As described in Susan Vogel's African Art Western Eyes published for Yale University Art Gallery such sculptures might have been made as a spirit wife. And in this nude state either for sale to foreigners or for sale to modern Baule people to decorate their houses. Traditionally Baule people use the same term when speaking of the sculpture. Or the spirit as a being. Spirit wifes and Spirit Husbands( blolo bla and blolo bian) live in the other world(blolo) which is also the source of human life. They represent one's spirit mate to consult in times of need in the conscious world. So far as people know. The other world resembles this world, and blolo spirits live in villages complete with elders and families, very much like those on earth. Everyone originally came from the Blolo and is never entirely free from relations with the spirits ... moreleft behind there. Everyone has an entire family in the blolo that can interfere with life after birth. So a Baule man or woman often have a figure carved to represent and appease his blolo bla or blolo bian. Susan Vogel This spirit wife measures 20 inches high is painted mostly red.

Among the Baule ceremonial spoons like this come in various forms and the handles are simple or elaborate with carved animal or human heads or figures. Or simply decorated with geometric motifs. Simple spoons are used for cooking, stirring, and eating. Elaborate and figural spoons such as this ... moreare best described as feast ladles used by their owner to offer food during public feasts or special ceremonies. In certain parts of Africa, spoons like this are considered prestige objects used by initiate members. They are carved from prestigious material such as ivory as is the case for the Lega people of the DR Congo. Among the Dan for instance, spoons can be a central piece of important ceremonies and an award to women who had been judged by their peers and elders of their village to be the most generous and hospitable to others of their village quarter.
