Additional Information: A Janus Reliquary Figure(Byeri Figures) from the Fang people(Ntumu Sub-group Northern Fang) Equatorial Guinea. This Janus guardian figure is not often noted among the Fang, although early reports mention male-female reliquary figures on shrines. This is a Very strong sculpture with a lot of presence! As sculpture. These Byeri figures stand out as a fine example of good carving in a later Fang style, and the sculptural detail is testament to the Fang artist who shaped them. Fang memorial sculpture has a long history of use and was in fact photographed as early as 1907(Tessmann 1913/1972, vol. II) However the cult of Byeri began to lose its prominence after 1910 due to colonial government pressure. During migrations which took place in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the Fang people moved to their present area becoming part of a complex overlay of population of approximately 200,000 which stretches from southern Cameroon into Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. Living in small forest communities, the Fang focused upon tightly knit kinship and lineage systems. Stressing continuity and relationships, the kinship system was employed to emphasize the veneration of ancestors through the use of figurative sculptures. Each lineage's ancestors were located in family shrines, housing memorials or reliquary boxes known as byeri, containing their bones, under the care of an elder known as the Esa. The ancestors were consulted before any serious event such as hunting, traveling, marriage, war, or planting was undertaken. The Esa, the shrine keeper, was the oldest living member of the clan

The twosidess are painted in white and red. The top is decorated with a hairstyle in the form of a skullcap painted in black. This mask comes from the Fang. Known as Ngontang(or Ngontanga) This mask variety"appeared among the Fang people of southern Cameroon and Gabon shortly before 1920. It represents a spirit of the dead. visiting as a young white woman from the world beyond. A Little History: These Masks are well known for their use during a number of ritual activities. These white-painted masks are known for their elegant abstractions of the human face. This Ngil Mask has a"heart-shaped" face and a prominent long tapering nose that ends above the mouth at the bottom of the chin. These Ngil Masks were worn during initiations and known for searching out sorcerers. The Mask's white color marks its spiritual identity. This Mask measures about 23-1/4" long and about 10" across the top. Most of these Masks have spent decades in use or in collections and therefore scrapes and general wear are fairly common and a normal part of their patina. This Mask is in very good vintage condition- no splits- some carved symbols under the left eye that you can see in the pictures- some wear on the high points such as the ears. The surface and the interior are worn and the surface of the face shows signs of numerous over paintings of the face indicating its age and long use as well. The openings at the either side of the mask were used to tie the mask to the head and face of the wearer. This piece remains a good example of Fang masks. It will be well placed in a collection. Well known for their reliquary figures the Fang also danced finely sculpted masks during a number of ritual activities. Among the Fang white-painted masks identified with the Ngil society are known for their elegant abstractions of the human face. Ngil masks have been described as having a'heart-shaped face' due to the facial features emphasizing refined curves of the orbital ridges above the eyes and the prominent line of the long tapering nose that ended above a discretely mouth carved at the bottom of the chin that completes the abstraction of the face. Ngil masks were worn during initiations and known for judicial and social control activities in searching out sorcerers. A process that ultimately led to their being banned by the French colonial authorities in 1910. The characteristics of the face do not express a composed serenity, but the deformation of anatomic characteristics reveals its superhuman character. The accentuated vertical development of the mask is underlined by the long line of the nose. The calm expression of the ngil masks stands in striking contrast to the extremely frightening. Threatening character of the masked performers who only performed at night in the light of torches. These masks were a part of paraphernalia of a hierarchically-structured male society which used them at initiation ceremonies and to pursue and punish sorcerers and offenders. An African Tribal Creations gallery NO RESERVE AUCTION This NO RESERVE auction is for a large and beautiful(if a bit unsettling) Fang Ngil mask. Hailing from Gabon. Cameroon, and Equatorial Guinea, the Fang people were historically a migrant people, but are now settled in the wide aforementioned region, and are nearly one million strong in number. Prolific producers of art, the fang are most commonly known in the art collecting community for their imposing'Ngil' or'Gorilla' masks that generally feature a characteristically elongated form, usually white(kaolin) pigmentation with black or otherwise darkly highlighted facial features, and which are generally associated with judicial connotations. The also, however, produce a wide variety of figures, musical instruments, and artistically rendered functional items. Worn by members ... moreof an eponymous society. The Ngil mask is a large, imposing, instantly recognizable artform among the Fang people. Though the Ngil society is no longer practiced among the Fang people, its masks still find their way into the marketplace, and are generally highly sought after. The Ngil mask would be used to initiate new members into its society, but it was most frequently used in the finding and punishing of criminals and sorcerers within the village community. The masks were said to have only appeared after dark. This large, impressive, and imposing Fang mask features the traditional stylistic cues, as well as the archetypical facial features and kaolin pigmentation. Despite a single hole that exists above the right eye, which appears very old and is completely naturalized into the piece, this object is in fairly good condition. It displays normal signs of wear, exposure and age, including faded pigment, scuffs and scratches, etc. all of which should be considered normal. There is also a chip from the lower right side of the mask's perimeter. From the back hangs a piece of fiber cloth, though the rest of the masquerader would be dressed in a Raffia costume. It is in very good condition.It is handcarved and painted. I do not know if the mask was worn for a certain ceremony, tribal ritual or festival. The listed price is what I paid for it originally plus a little to cover the freight to have it shipped from California. The people that are called“Fang” in the geographic or ethnographic literature number 800.000 and constitute a vast mosaic of village communities, established in a large zone of Atlantic equatorial Africa comprising Cameroon, continental equatorial Guinea and nearly the whole north of Gabon, on the right bank of the Ogowe River. Historically the Fang were itinerant, and it is relatively recently that they have settled into this broad area. The migratory existence of the Fang prohibited the creation of ancestral shrines at gravesites. This is a classic Fang mask and would stand well in a collection. The purity of its forms equals its spiritual identity. In fact. Among the Fang such masks are identified with the Ngil society. Ngil masks were worn during initiations and known for judicial and social control activities in searching out sorcerers, a process that ultimately led to their being banned by the French colonial authorities in 1910. A later development among the Fang was the appearance of a mask known as Ngontangan, the head of the young white girl" referring to early European women missionaries who arrived on the coast during the nineteenth century. A Little History: These Masks are well known for their use during a number of ritual activities. These white-painted masks are known for their elegant abstractions of the human face. This Ngil Mask has a"heart-shaped" face and a prominent long tapering nose that ends above the mouth at the bottom of the chin. These Ngil Masks were worn during initiations and known for searching out sorcerers. The Mask's white color marks its spiritual identity. This Mask measures about 23-1/4" long ... moreand about 10" across the top. Most of these Masks have spent decades in use or in collections and therefore scrapes and general wear are fairly common and a normal part of their patina. This Mask is in very good vintage condition- no splits- some carved symbols under the left eye that you can see in the pictures- some wear on the high points such as the ears. FANG ANCESTRAL MASK- LARGE Cameroon 20th Century 31" x 12" x 7" with crown on check wood. Carved and painted The Fang used masks in their secret societies. The ngil(gorilla) masks were worn by members of a male society of the same name during the initiation of new members and the persecution of wrong-doers. Masqueraders. Clad in raffia costumes and attended by helpers, would materialize in the village after dark, illuminated by flickering torchlight. Fang masks, such as those worn by itinerant troubadours and for hunting and punishing sorcerers, are painted white with facial features outlined in black. Typical are large, elongated masks covered with kaolin and featuring a face that was usually heart-shaped with a long, fine nose. Apparently it has been linked with the dead and ancestors, since white is their color.

During the 18th and 19th centuries the Fang tribespeople migrated from the north-west and are today scattered across southern Cameroon. Equatorial Guinea and Gabon. They are principally hunters, but also farm. Their social structure is based on the clan, a group of individuals with a common ancestor, and on the family. Cohesion among the Fang clans is maintained through the So and Ngil societies. Each family possesses a Byeri. Or reliquary box, in which the bones of famous ancestors were kept. The box was kept by the Esa. The eldest man in the family. Important masks are associated with the Ngil society. They are characterized by elongated features and a heart-shaped face and were thought to have judiciary powers and so were worn when sentences were handed down by the society. Ngil masks were outlawed in 1910 by the French colonials following ... morea series of ritual murders. The piece for sale here was obtained while I was in Equatorial Guinea. Africa. It shows considerable wear and was just obtained from a chief's kinsman while I was there. The figure displays the characteristics of the Fang Ngil mask. It is an excellent example if someone you are looking for an original piece directly from the Fang tribe in Africa! I spoke with the traders in Equatorial Guinea and they told me that they usually traded goods in exchange for these original pieces as the tribal chiefs often have no need of money; thus salt. Palm wine, and petroleum are often used as a trade medium. The tribes will discard old masks after they have served their purposes and carve new ones over time for ritual use. It is usually these discarded tribal masks and statues that they trade as the value to them is in the ceremony and not the mask or statue. Material: Wood
