Here for sale is a very interesting primitive African Lwalwa mask from Democratic Republic of Congo. It was carved by using primitive tools and the minor cracks due to natural wood shrink or usage by native poeple. These imperfections made it more primitive and impressive. The first six pictures are closer to real color. I purchased it from an estate sale. Now I am downsizing my collection and other collectors can have chance to enjoy this fabulous primitive art. The Lwalwa produce some of the most dramatically conceived masks in Central Africa. The forms being complex synthesis of concavity and planar geometry. Utilized by the Ngongo society which is primarily concerned with hunting increase and anti-witchcraft activity, Lwalwa masks are worn in acrobatic dances by men and are secured buy a string, passing through the face into the interior just below the nose, that holds the mask in place and is clenched between the teeth of the dancer. The Lweta, in the southwest of the former Kasai province, 20,000 Lwalwa live in DRC, but many more are in Angola. Their social and political organization is rudimentary. Each Lwalwa village is headed by a male or female chief, whose power is held in check by a powerful society, the bangongo. The Lwalwa believe in a supreme being, but they worship only ... morethe spirits of the hunt and nature. The land where the Lwalwa live is rich and fertile. Lending itself well to the agricultural economy of the people. The women are almost wholly responsible for all that goes into the growing of crops, both for local consumption and for trade. The men do, however, lend a hand during the busy harvest time, so that they can evaluate their household intake for the season. Although hunting by the men provides some occasional supplementary protein, the women provide the majority of the nutritious intake. The hunt, sometimes individual and sometimes communal, still plays an important social role among the Lwalwa. The sculptor enjoyed a privileged status and was paid handsomely; his profession was hereditary and often, due to his riches, he was made village chief in charge of the masked dances. You are bidding on a REAL OLD LWALWA PEOPLE Carved Statue of a Standing Figure. From Congo. Some small figures are carved for divination and display on shrines. But the majority of Lwalwa art in collections consists of beautifully sculpted masks, characteristically elongated, with prominent noses, rectangular eyes, and a small hole between the mouth and nose, through which a cord is passed in order to secure the mask on a dancer's face. Lwalwa religion entails belief in a supreme god(Mvidie Mukulu) and an omniscient creator(Nzambi) Respect is paid to recently departed ancestors. And offerings are made to various nature spirits who have shrines built in their honor. It is believed that everything has a spirit(mukishi) which can be offended and cause trouble. These spirits must be appeased if balance and order are to be maintained. This particular Lwalwa mask is known as"shifo" Shifola" or"Tshikulukulu" which means owl whose beak is said to have inspired this type of mask. Shifola is a male mask recognized by its short and rounded nose.The dancer would hold a piece of cord between his teeth which passed through the mask and was knotted in a hole under the nose. Beautiful Antique Lwalwa Nkaki Face Mask - Congo Zaire / DRC
This is a beautiful antique Lwlawa face mask from the Kasai region in Southern DRC. Though quite small in size. The Lwalwa sculpture is widely known for its extreme, highly abstract features. Lwalwa produced both statues and masks, of which four types are recorded. Masks were used in initiations rites and funerals and were danced only at night. The piece here belongs to the Nkaki type. It is made of a medium hard wood and shows an elongated. Concave face, with a pointed nose tapering to the forehead into a crest– as well as a tubular mouth, slit eyes and carved ears. The patina is of a reddish brown and the inside of the mask also shows a beautiful patina from use.
