Title, Fang Byeri Reliquary Figure Janus Head Gabon African Type of Object, Carving, Country of Origin, Gabon. Equatorial Guinea, People, Fang, Materials, ... moreWood, Approximate Age, second half 20th century, Dimensions, 22 inches H. x 5 inches W. Overall Condition, Fair, Damage/Repair, foot broken with missing toes and chip. age cracks thoughout the figure crack in one foot. Minor old chips in places. Additional Information: A Janus Reliquary Figure(Byeri Figures) from the Fang people(Ntumu Sub-group Northern Fang) Equatorial Guinea. This Janus guardian figure is not often noted among the Fang, although early reports mention male-female reliquary figures on shrines. This is a Very strong sculpture with a lot of presence! As sculpture. These Byeri figures stand out as a fine example of good carving in a later Fang style, and the sculptural detail is testament to the Fang artist who shaped them. Fang memorial sculpture has a long history of use and was in fact photographed as early as 1907(Tessmann 1913/1972, vol. II) However the cult of Byeri began to lose its prominence after 1910 due to colonial government pressure. During migrations which took place in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the Fang people moved to their present area becoming part of a complex overlay of population of approximately 200,000 which stretches from southern Cameroon into Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. Living in small forest communities, the Fang focused upon tightly knit kinship and lineage systems. Stressing continuity and relationships, the kinship system was employed to emphasize the veneration of ancestors through the use of figurative sculptures. Each lineage's ancestors were located in family shrines, housing memorials or reliquary boxes known as byeri, containing their bones, under the care of an elder known as the Esa. The ancestors were consulted before any serious event such as hunting, traveling, marriage, war, or planting was undertaken. The Esa, the shrine keeper, was the oldest living member of the clan

Gabon: RareTribal used African Medicine pot from the Fang. Hand carved from a single piece of wood. Height: 40 cm. The people that are called“Fang” in ... morethe geographic or ethnographic literature number 800.000 and constitute a vast mosaic of village communities, established in a large zone of Atlantic equatorial Africa comprising Cameroon, continental equatorial Guinea and nearly the whole north of Gabon, on the right bank of the Ogowe River. Historically the Fang were itinerant, and it is relatively recently that they have settled into this broad area. The migratory existence of the Fang prohibited the creation of ancestral shrines at gravesites. Instead, the remains of the important dead, in the form of the skull and other bones, were carried from place to place in a cylindrical bark box. The great rain forest region where the Fang settled is a plateau of middle altitude, cut by innumerable waters with falls and rapids rendering navigation for the most part impossible, and with a climate typically equatorial. Fang are principally hunters but also agriculturists. Their social structure is based on a clan, a group of individuals with a common ancestor, and on the family.

Old insect damage arrested, several holes and chips;cracks in face, to the back, in feet; dust on the surface, Additional Information: A Punu Standing Female Ancestor Figure with elaborate hairstyle scarification in forehead. Chest, and belly body painted in white The Punu. Like their relatives the Shira and the Lumbo, fled the Fang and settled in the equatorial forests of southern Gabon. Little is known about their history or way of life. They do appear to have connections to the Fang and Kota in their religious and ancestral rituals. The Punu are known for their maiden spirit masks with white face used in the context of the Mukuji society. Most of the known Punu statues are small works with face painted in white as on their masks, thought to be used as guardian figures. Sculpted figures among the Punu have been identified as prestige and magical figures during special ceremonies. They were placed in close proximity to funerary bundles of revered ancestors. On this figure. The white pigment as well as the closed eyes reflect the spirituality and the face of the figure with its high eyebrow and forehead markings are based upon the marvelously carved Mukudj masks active among the Punu. Mukudj masks were worn by male dancers at funerals of honored elder males in which the white face portrays an idealized female with a well defined helmet-like hair style that crowns her head and surrounds her face. Though the face has a calm expression the figure is shown in a dance that is of great vigor and movement and she maintains her sense of composure and calm. The elegant coiffure and body and the face marking portray the figure as a mature woman of great composure and beauty, balancing action to an extraordinary sense of reserve.

NEW! Description: Catalogue.

Though similar in their forms the reliquary figures fall into a number of subtly differentiated sub-styles that stretch from their core area in Gabon to southern Cameroon. Usually, a bark container known as a byeri was normally associated to Fang figures and held the bones of an ancestor that were venerated during annual ceremonies at which the ancestors were present in the form of the sculptures. This figure would not have been attached to a bark reliquary but most probably was used during Byeri rituals. The figure can still be appreciated for its unique form as an example of hybrid Fang carving with strong. This"byeri" figure is an extremely unusual example in term of style, but still fits firmly within the Fang tradition. Unusual elements include the massive head, the strange the copper sheets pattern around the navel, and the light-colored wood. These element

Among the Fang white-painted masks identified with the Ngil society are known for their elegant abstractions of the human face. Ngil masks have been described as having a'heart-shaped face' due to the facial features emphasizing refined curves of the orbital ridges above the eyes and the prominent line of the long tapering nose that ended above a discretely mouth carved at the bottom of the chin that completes the abstraction of the face. Ngil masks were worn during initiations and known for judicial and social control activities in searching out sorcerers. FANG PEOPLE CARVED WOOD STATUE OF FEMALE FIGURE FROM GABON
You are bidding on a Beautiful Tribal FANG PEOPLE Carved Wood Statue of a Female Figure. From Gabon. Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 This is one of Many items I will be offering on ebay from an Amazing Single New York Collection I bought. The Fang migrated into their current area from the northeast in recent centuries as small groups or families of nomadic agriculturalists. Their militant nature allowed them to sieze land from their weaker neighbors as they moved in. The Fang are best known for their wooden reliquary figures which are abstract anthropomorphic carvings. There are a few in collections that are still attached to the original relics they were meant to protect. The traditional religion of Fang centered around ancestors who are believed to wield power in the afterlife as they did as living leaders of the community. The skulls ... moreand long bones of these men were believed to retain power and to have control over the well-being of the family. Usually the relics were kept hidden away from the uninitiated and women. Wooden sculptures. Known as reliquary guardian figures, were attached to the boxes containing the bones. Some believe that the figures are an abstract portrait of the deceased individual, while others argue that they serve to protect the spirit of the deceased from evil. It must be remembered, however, that it was the bones themselves that were sacred, not the wooden figures, thus there is no apparent contradiction in individuals selling what in effect was the tombstone of their ancestors for considerable profit to art dealers. During migrations the relics were brought along, but the reliquaries were often left behind. CONDITION: I will try my best to report the accurate condition of all images I am offering on ebay. This is a tribal item and buyer must understand that the surface is not smooth. There is the typical dirt and scratching to the Surface. Wear to the surface with some surface cracks. A crack to the edge of the"headdress"see photos) Otherwise the figure is in good conditio
Fang Ngil mask, Gabon, African Tribal Creations, Art, Gorilla, Pangwe, Cameroon
An African Tribal Creations gallery NO RESERVE AUCTION This NO RESERVE auction is for a large and beautiful(if a bit unsettling) Fang Ngil mask. Hailing from Gabon. Cameroon, and Equatorial Guinea, the Fang people were historically a migrant people, but are now settled in the wide aforementioned region, and are nearly one million strong in number. Prolific producers of art, the fang are most commonly known in the art collecting community for their imposing'Ngil' or'Gorilla' masks that generally feature a characteristically elongated form, usually white(kaolin) pigmentation with black or otherwise darkly highlighted facial features, and which are generally associated with judicial connotations. The also, however, produce a wide variety of figures, musical instruments, and artistically rendered functional items. Worn by members ... moreof an eponymous society. The Ngil mask is a large, imposing, instantly recognizable artform among the Fang people. Though the Ngil society is no longer practiced among the Fang people, its masks still find their way into the marketplace, and are generally highly sought after. The Ngil mask would be used to initiate new members into its society, but it was most frequently used in the finding and punishing of criminals and sorcerers within the village community. The masks were said to have only appeared after dark. This large, impressive, and imposing Fang mask features the traditional stylistic cues, as well as the archetypical facial features and kaolin pigmentation. Despite a single hole that exists above the right eye, which appears very old and is completely naturalized into the piece, this object is in fairly good condition. It displays normal signs of wear, exposure and age, including faded pigment, scuffs and scratches, etc. all of which should be considered normal. There is also a chip from the lower right side of the mask's perimeter. From the back hangs a piece of fiber cloth, though the rest of the masquerader would be dressed in a Raffia costume. This is a siza

A ... morebark container known as a byeri was normally associated to Fang figures. The container would hold the bones of an ancestor that were venerated during annual ceremonies at which the ancestors were present in the form of the sculptures. This figure has not been attached to a bark reliquary but most probably was used during Byeri rituals. However the figure can still be appreciated for it s unique form as an example of hybrid Fang carving with strong Cameroon influences. This an unusual miniature example. But still fits firmly within the Fang tradition. Unusual elements include its very small size. The Fang live in three countries including Equatorial Guinea. Gabon and Cameroon. The atypical features of this piece appear to be stylistic elements commonly found in Cameroon, and point to this area for its origin. The sculptures of the Fang have obtained an almost legendary status among collectors. They attained this lofty position based almost entirely upon their"byeri" reliquary heads and figures. The discovery of these haunting pieces by scholars and travelers during the last half of the 19th century helped elevate African art into the collecting mainstream among European

However the figure can still be appreciated for it’s unique form as an example of Fang carving. As one of the most powerful and best-known sculptural forms known in Sub-Saharan Africa. Fang figures hold a prominent place in the history of African art. As reliquary guardians, Fang figures often appear as though they are slightly crouched with legs slightly bent or shown in a seated position. Known as'byeri' these sculpted reliquaries held the bones of ancestors and were venerated through annual ceremonies at which they were present in the form of the sculptures. Photographed as early as 1907(Tessmann 1913/1972. Vol. II) the cult of Byeri began to lose its prominence after 1910 due to colonial government pressure. Further reading: Perrois. Louis, 1986. FANG BIERI AFRICAN FIGURE - CAMEROON/GABON
Fang Bieri Figure– Cameroon/Gabon The bieri would be consulted when the village was to change location. When a new crop was planted, during a palaver, or before going hunting, fishing, or to war. But once separated from the reliquary chest, the sculpted object would lose its sacred value and could be destroyed. The ritual consisted of prayers, libations, and sacrifices offered to the ancestor, whose scull would be rubbed with powder and paint each time. With its large head, long body, and short extremities, the Fang bieri had the proportion of a newborn, thus emphasizing the group’s continuity with its ancestor and with the three classes of the society: the“not-yet-born, the living, and the dead. The relics were essentially skull fragments, or sometimes complete skulls, jawbones, teeth and small bones. The bieri also served for therapeutic ... morerituals and, above all, for the initiation of young males during the great so festival. This fine example measure 23“ tall and 5.5“ wide.
Lot 68, Outstanding Fang Bieri Reliquary Figure, Gabon
The ensemble of Fang peoples practice a cult devoted to ancestor lineages. The bieri. Whose aim is to both protect themselves from the deceased and to recruit their aid in matters of daily life. This familial cult does not monopolize the Fang’s religious universe, for it coexists with other beliefs and rituals of a more collective character. It is the bieri. Or ancestor sculpture, which has most obviously given rise to the making of remarkable wooden sculpture. The statuary of the Fang can be classified into three main groups: heads on long necks, half-figures and full figures, standing or seated. Carved with great simplicity, at the same time they exhibit a high degree of sophistication in the coordination of bulbous forms. The neck is often a massive cylindrical form. The arms have various positions: hands clasped in front of the body(sometimes ... moreholding an object) held in front of the chest or attached to it; hands resting on the knees in the seated figures. The navel is often exaggerated into a cylindrical form. Legs are short, stunted. Usually there is a domed, wide forehead and the eyebrows often form arcs with the nose. The eyes are often made of metal roundlets. The bieri would be consulted when the village was to change location. Also known as photoxylographs, are a late-nineteenth century printing process. It is the result of a marriage of wood engraving, originally developed at the end of the eighteenth century by Thomas Bewick, whereby the wood block was cut not on the plank side with the grain, like woodcuts, but instead across the grain on the end-grain of very hard woods, and the burgeoning photographic processes of the mid-nineteenth century. The process was an attempt to capture the new and uniquely authentic reality of photography. Though earnest experimentation began in the 1850s. The process of reproducing the gradual tonal ranges of photography, absent the interpretive hand of an artist on a printer's block, plate, or stone, was mechanically unachievable for decades. The seemingly simple task of converting a photograph to a reproducible medium is fraught with complication by the simple, immutable fact that printer's ink lacks tonal gradation; black is always black. Thus, the only contemporaneously suitable solution was to laboriously recreate by hand the appearance of a photograph through incredibly refined line

Fang bieri Reliquary Figure on Wooden base, Gabon
The statuary of the Fang can be classified into three main groups: heads on long necks. Half-figures and full figures, standing or seated. Carved with great simplicity, at the same time they exhibit a high degree of sophistication in the coordination of bulbous forms. The neck is often a massive cylindrical form. The arms have various positions: hands clasped in front of the body(sometimes holding an object) held in front of the chest or attached to it; hands resting on the knees in the seated figures. The navel is often exaggerated into a cylindrical form. Legs are short, stunted. Usually there is a domed, wide forehead and the eyebrows often form arcs with the nose. The eyes are often made of metal roundlets. The bieri would be consulted when the village was to change location. When a new crop was planted, during a palaver, or before going ... morehunting, fishing, or to war. But once separated from the reliquary chest, the sculpted object would lose its sacred value and could be destroyed. The ritual consisted of prayers, libations, and sacrifices offered to the ancestor, whose scull would be rubbed with powder and paint each time. With its large head, long body, and short extremities, the Fang bieri had the proportion of a newborn. Thus emphasizing the group’s continuity with its ancestor and with the three classes of the society Measures- 9 1/2" X 3 1/2" Secured on a wooden polished base

TOP Female FANG reliquary carved wood with brass Gabon - no reserve
Fang female(rarer than males) reliquary figure embellished with metalwork. Good condition. Stands on its own. Impressive. The Fang peoples of the Republic of Gabon derive a sense of continuity with their past as well as a communal cohesiveness in the present through an ancestral cult known as bieri. Bieri reliquary figures. Such as the one seen here, embody the qualities that the Fang admire most in people—namely, tranquility, vitality, and the ability to hold opposites in balance. These qualities are conveyed in this figure through the juxtaposition of an infant's large head with the developed body of an adult, and the contrast of a static, symmetrical pose and passive, expressionless face with the tension of bulging muscles on the arms and legs. Bieri figures are often embellished with elaborate coiffures. Facial scarification, jewelry, ... morehorns, and other emblems of spiritual power. This one has been adorned with metal bangles around the neck, ankles, and wrist. Its lustrous surface is a result of repeated ritual purifying applications of palm oil. Many Fang sculptures continue to exude the oil long after their original treatment. In the dense rainforests of Central Africa. Many cultures, including the Fang, derive a sense of cohesion from the preservation of family genealogies in figurative sculptural traditions. These wooden bieri figures and heads are placed on top of bark containers that hold the skulls of important clan ancestors. It has been suggested that the earliest reliquary guardians were wooden heads. But the tradition expanded during the 1950s to include busts and full figures, male or female. The carved head or figure mounted on top of the reliquary box guards the sacred contents against the forbidden gaze of women and uninitiated boys. It appears that the full figures, as opposed to the heads, are also used as puppets in theatrical initiation rituals associated with the bieri in which young male initiates are presented to deceased ancestors. During the 1920s and'30s. Many European artists t

BEAUTIFUL FANG PEOPLE CARVED WOOD SPOON WITH FIGURE'S HEAD - FROM GABON
You are bidding on an Original and Beautiful FANG PEOPLE Carved Wood Spoon with Figure's face. From Gabon. The Fang are best known for their wooden reliquary figures which are abstract anthropomorphic carvings. There are a few in collections that are still attached to the original relics they were meant to protect. The Fang migrated into their current area from the northeast in recent centuries as small groups or families of nomadic agriculturalists. Their militant nature allowed them to sieze land from their weaker neighbors as they moved in. The traditional religion of Fang centered around ancestors who are believed to wield power in the afterlife as they did as living leaders of the community. The skulls and long bones of these men were believed to retain power and to have control over the well-being of the family. Usually the relics ... morewere kept hidden away from the uninitiated and women. Established in a large zone of Atlantic equatorial Africa comprising Cameroon, continental Equatorial Guinea and nearly the whole north of Gabon. Historically the Fang were itinerant, and it is relatively recently that they have settled into this broad area. These iron"throwing Knife" forms were recognized and used as currency for rare but major transactions. Painter Fred Uhlman words- Most of the artists I admired. Picasso, Modigliani, Deraini, to mention only a few, had collected African art and had been profoundly influenced by it. Shortly afterwards I bought the Baule Fetish and the Baule bobbin which are still two of the finest pieces in my collection. It is easy to see why I bought them and why from that moment I have never stopped collecting. The head of the bobbin or heddle- pulley which is after all only a functional object for the purpose of weaving seemed to me then and today as beautiful as a Greek goddess. The fetish moved me as deeply as the bobbin by its silent tragic dignity and its air of profound meditation. This Mask measures about 23-1/4" long ... moreand about 10" across the top. Most of these Masks have spent decades in use or in collections and therefore scrapes and general wear are fairly common and a normal part of their patina. This Mask is in very good vintage condition- no splits- some carved symbols under the left eye that you can see in the pictures- some wear on the high points such as the ears. Chin and top protruding head piece- all this attests to its age and use- please view all the pictures. A little different with the ring nose and quite long as these go. A nice addition to any collection. You will receive the exact item that you see in the pictures. Thanks for Looking. Thanks for visiting our site. GREAT FANG BIERI RELIQUARY HEAD GABON #2402 ~ For African Art Gallery
FANG BIERI RELIQUARY HEAD#2402 Tribe: Fang. Country: Gabon. Material: Wood. Pigment. Size: 12.5" 31.75 cm) Tall. Item: 2402. Condition: Good. Fang reliquary heads like these. Carved by the Fang tribe were called Bieri(similar to the figures used in the same way) and served as guardians of the enshrined relics of important ancestors. Sitting on top of the containers, they were also consulted for aid and protection. The Fang are famous for their Byeri heads and figures, these were made for the Byeri, a family cult that venerated important ancestors by preserving their remains in containers made of bark that was stitched together to form a cylindrical box. Ancestral status was awarded to founders of lineages, heads of clans and families and women that displayed extraordinary powers, such as the ability to bear a unusual number of children. ... moreThe essential remains of these ancestors was their skulls, however at times, bones from the limbs and vertebrae were preserved as well. These Fang reliquary carving served as a shield between the relics and possible destructive force, as sort of guardian. It protected both the remains of the ancestor from intruders and malevolent supernatural forces and vulnerable humans such as the uninitiated, women and non-family members from the potentially dangerous ancestors. Only initiated men of the family clan were permitted to see the relics. During one of the byeri rituals, known a melan, young initiates were given hallucinogenic herbs and presented with figural statues as symbolic invocations of their ancestors. By doing so, statues were used to animate the deceased and to actualize the presence of the clan ancestors. When these statues were removed from the ancestral remains, however, they function only as symbols and no longer as direct receptacles for the spirit. by adding my eBay Store to your Favorites Check out my! African Fang N'gil Mask - Gabon, Cameroon,
During the 18th and 19th centuries the Fang tribespeople migrated from the north-west and are today scattered across southern Cameroon. Equatorial Guinea and Gabon. They are principally hunters, but also farm. Their social structure is based on the clan, a group of individuals with a common ancestor, and on the family. Cohesion among the Fang clans is maintained through the So and Ngil societies. Each family possesses a Byeri. Or reliquary box, in which the bones of famous ancestors were kept. The box was kept by the Esa. The eldest man in the family. Important masks are associated with the Ngil society. They are characterized by elongated features and a heart-shaped face and were thought to have judiciary powers and so were worn when sentences were handed down by the society. Ngil masks were outlawed in 1910 by the French colonials following ... morea series of ritual murders. The piece for sale here was obtained while I was in Equatorial Guinea. Africa. It shows considerable wear and was just obtained from a chief's kinsman while I was there. The figure displays the characteristics of the Fang Ngil mask. It is an excellent example if someone you are looking for an original piece directly from the Fang tribe in Africa! I spoke with the traders in Equatorial Guinea and they told me that they usually traded goods in exchange for these original pieces as the tribal chiefs often have no need of money; thus salt. Palm wine, and petroleum are often used as a trade medium. The tribes will discard old masks after they have served their purposes and carve new ones over time for ritual use. It is usually these discarded tribal masks and statues that they trade as the value to them is in the ceremony and not the mask or statue. Material: Wood

Fang figures ... morehold a prominent place in the history of African art. The byeri reliquary held the bones of ancestors and were venerated through annual ceremonies at which they were present in the form of the sculptures. Photographed as early as 1907(Tessmann 1913/1972, vol. II) the cult of Byeri began to lose its prominence after 1910 due to colonial government pressure. In the past figures would often be embellished with native copper bands around arms or wrists and some would hold in front of them miniature ancestor figures or carved animal horns known as Nlakh or small cups used in byeri rituals.
