Beautifully painted. Lots of attention to detail. This wooden mask was handcrafted in the Ivory Coast by the Yaure people. It is a piece my father acquired during his visit to Africa in the early 70's. It has a unique shape and is painted with a white face and has yellow and blue accents around the eyes and ears. The headdress is a dark black with blue edges. You will find some chipping and wear to the paint. Most prominent is the forehead. Characteristic of the Baule drums are these traditional decorative motifs to be admired by the audience. The drummer would use his hands as the beater, creating varied tones by shaping or cupping his hands, rubbing, slapping or thumping the drum head with his fingers and/or palms. Figures represent ancestors. The Baule are one of the Akan peoples. They moved west to the Ivory Coast more than 200 years ago and adopted sculptural and masking traditions from their neighbors. All were thought to be inhabited by spirits and did not represent ancestors. These masks were danced for entertainment. included on these masks are the scarification's on the cheeks that once typified the Baule( baule ngole) but no longer exist. Following independence. The government proscribed them in order to eliminate signs of ethnicity and bring all Ivoirians into a single people. The Baule name comes from their myth of origin. In the seventeenth century. In what is today known as Ghana, the Denkyera kingdom rose to prominence, but a dispute led to a dynasty leaving the country. Including wooden sculpture, gold and brass casting similar to their Asante ancestors, and mask and figure carving, which have been greatly influenced by their Senufo and Guro neighbors. History: The Baule belong to the Akan peoples who inhabit Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. Three hundred years ago the Baule people migrated westward from Ghana when the Asante rose to power. The tale of how they broke away from the Asante has been preserved in their oral traditions. During the Asante ... morerise to power the Baule queen. Aura Poku, was in direct competition with the current Asante king. When the Asante prevailed, the queen led her people away to the land they now occupy. The male descendant of Aura Poku still lives in the palace she established and is honored by the Baule as their nominal king. Economy: The Baule grow yams and some maize as primary crops. They are also exporters of cocoa and kola nuts. Which are grown on local plantations using large numbers of exploited migrant laborers, most from Burkina Faso. Antique Vintage African Art Baule Yaoure Dan Carved Mask Ivory Coast Tribal Art
Beautiful and artistic antique vintage carved African tribal mask. I am not sure if Baule, Yaoure or Dan. I was told that is probably from the Ivory Coast. I don’t know how old it is it was purchased in 1990 for $275 as“old” As you can see from the pics this mask is an incredible elegant and balanced work of art. It will make a great center piece of your African collection or just simply hanging on your wall as an art display. There is one well repaired crack on the left section where the mask touches the face(see pics 5 and 6) which does not affect the section with the mask itself and a little nick missing on the left ear(pics 3 and 4) other than that just the minor scratches and nicks due to the age. Base has a vegetal matter woven around it with something that resembles dried mud rubbed over it. I don't know what it is but it's hard and does not crumble. Measures approx. 15" long x 5 3/4" at widest. No cracks or repairs. In overall good condition but top point of mask and vegetal matter has some wear and loss of pigment. Baule Statuettes very from small to very large in size. They are usually standing on a base with legs slightly bent, with their hands resting on their abdomen in a gesture of peace, and their elongated necks supporting a face with typically raised scarification and bulging eyes. The coiffure is always detailed and is usually divided into plaits. They are sometimes covered with gold leaf or may represent colonials. Statues were mostly used for two purposes.
