Vintage Handcrafted Handpainted African Tribal Art Mask Yaure Tribe Ivory Coast
Beautifully painted. Lots of attention to detail. This wooden mask was handcrafted in the Ivory Coast by the Yaure people. It is a piece my father acquired during his visit to Africa in the early 70's. It has a unique shape and is painted with a white face and has yellow and blue accents around the eyes and ears. The headdress is a dark black with blue edges. You will find some chipping and wear to the paint. Most prominent is the forehead. The mask measures 4 1/5" X 12 1/4" Four holes are drilled in the back so the mask can be hung in 2 different ways. Please refer to the pictures as they are a part of the description. Size: just over 8 inches tall. the'legs' stand about 2.5 inches apart This is a unique old hand crafted African made sling shot sculpture. It is actually upside down in the photo as the figurine of the man would have been used as a hand grip and the'legs' would be where the elastic was strung. This item though appears to have never actually been used as a sling shot. It is in decent condition for it's age with a very attractive finish and is more the likely hand made in the Ivory Coast. Very Old Baule Original Tribal Drum #Alobalo African art Ivory Coast
Item Specifications Type of Object Drum Materials Wood. Pigment Ethnic Group Baule Country of Origin Ivory Coast Approximate Age + 100 years Dimensions 23.6/15.3 inches(60/39 cm) Additional information Embellished drum from the Baule people of the Ivory Coast. Has 2 high reliefs depicting figures and abstract patterns with precision and balanced asymmetry. Characteristic of the Baule drums are these traditional decorative motifs to be admired by the audience. The drummer would use his hands as the beater, creating varied tones by shaping or cupping his hands, rubbing, slapping or thumping the drum head with his fingers and/or palms. Figures represent ancestors. The Baule are one of the Akan peoples. They moved west to the Ivory Coast more than 200 years ago and adopted sculptural and masking traditions from their neighbors. The Guro, Senufo ... moreand Yaure peoples. Although Baule figures had a wide range of use. The actual function of the figures is not easy for outsiders to determine. All were thought to be inhabited by spirits and did not represent ancestors. Small figures include the roughly carved bo usu that helped with hunting and the more refined blolo bla(spirit wife) and blolo bian(spirit husband) that, if well taken care of, helped their human partners in all areas of life. Asye usu figures were the abode of spirits associated with diviners. In ritual performances the spirit would come out to possess the diviner, causing a trance. The display of the figures would enhance and support the ensuing dance. Figures carved by the Attie(southern neighbors of the Baule and like them, members of the Akan people) share the careful detailing and virtuosity typical of Baule carving but have more muscular limbs and small pegs imitating scarification patterns. Consignor of this item says that her grandfather bought it back from a missionary trip sometime before the 1950's. But the age is unknown. Tribal Art Vintage West African Ivory Coast Wood Carved Baule Mask Pair 2 Vintage African wood carved masks from Baule tribe. Ivory Coast Each measures 45cm*20cm(17 inch* 8 inch) A pair of portrait masks. These masks were danced for entertainment. included on these masks are the scarification's on the cheeks that once typified the Baule( baule ngole) but no longer exist. Following independence. The government proscribed them in order to eliminate signs of ethnicity and bring all Ivoirians into a single people. The Baule name comes from their myth of origin. In the seventeenth century. In what is today known as Ghana, the Denkyera kingdom rose to prominence, but a dispute led to a dynasty leaving the country. Abla Poku, the queen, had to flee far from Kumasi with her people, the Asabu, whom she led through the forests, but their trip was ... morebrought up short by the Comoe river. she consulted her diviner, who told her that to ensure safe passage across the river, she would have to sacrifice her only child. So, eager to escort her people to the promised land, she decided the she herself would throw the child into the waters as an offering to the river gods, crying out"Baouli" My child is dead! and the followers are said to have adopted this word as the name for their people in honor of the queen's sacrifice.

Antique Vintage African Art Baule Yaoure Dan Carved Mask Ivory Coast Tribal Art
Beautiful and artistic antique vintage carved African tribal mask. I am not sure if Baule, Yaoure or Dan. I was told that is probably from the Ivory Coast. I don’t know how old it is it was purchased in 1990 for $275 as“old” As you can see from the pics this mask is an incredible elegant and balanced work of art. It will make a great center piece of your African collection or just simply hanging on your wall as an art display. There is one well repaired crack on the left section where the mask touches the face(see pics 5 and 6) which does not affect the section with the mask itself and a little nick missing on the left ear(pics 3 and 4) other than that just the minor scratches and nicks due to the age. Overall in very clean and good shape- see pics and if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask. Size: about 19”by 9.5” in the widest ... morepoint. Quite heavy for its size so shipping will be high.
