The hairstyle and the attention given to show the carved teeth in the mouth, the relief carving of the ears and the countersunk eyes with an exquisitely carved edge surrounding the forehead all reflect the skill of the sculptor. The exterior of the mask shows evidence of much use as a shiny and worn surface is noted. The basketry that supported the mask and which was worn on the top of the head with a cloth covering the face also shows signs of use. Political and religious ... morestructures which influences their arts. Though generally ruled by a local elder Cross River societies depend to a great extent upon a number of men’s secret societies to regulate the community and to instruct and initiate men into various levels of their organization. The Ejagham identified as the Ekoi in the past have a men’s secret society called Ngbe, whose members are known for wearing large skin covered masks worn over costumes covering the body. Each Ngbe chapter would have a lodge within which a range of ritual equipment was kept including masks. Ngbe membership was originally identified with a warrior’s society on the Cameroon side of the Cross River region, however today Ngbe members are engaged in social control and political activities. Ngbe members use ritual equipment to initiate new members and celebrates their lives during funerals. Crest masks such as this one were worn on the top of the head attached to a basketry cap. Ekoi men have traditionally hunted, while women have engaged in agriculture, raising yams, plantains, and corn(maize) Women also fish, and both men and women participate in weaving. Ekoi towns are ruled by councils of elders. But townspeople are free to attend meetings. Ekoi Ejagham Mask Head Piece. Vintage African Tribal Art / Nigeria
This piece is one of the most attractive Ekoi/ Ejagham pieces I have seen and have owned for years. I am not positive of the age but I guess estimate possibly late 1960s and early 1970s era. The head is bounded in leather on wood. There are raised impressions of eyebrows and ears. The eyes were painted in white. The hair was done on braided rows represented by wooden balls on the head. Please note that one hair ball piece is missing. See photos. The piece measures 16 inches high. Front of head to backside measures 10 inches. Head width measures 10 inches. Straw base measures 5 inches diameter with flanged base for support. The backside of straw base has some light scratches which made it lighter in color than surrounding areas. See photo. For more information about the Ekoi tribe please refer to link: This item is NON-RETURNABLE! I must emphasize ... moreagain. Item is in as is condition as noted in the photos. SHIPPING TO CONTINENTAL USA only. LAST ROUND for this auction before the item reverts back to its owner. LAST CHANCE! Price reduced to encourage bidding.

Ejagham (Ekoi)Rare Large Sculpture--Mounted Warrior Chief On Horse
Condition: excellent. Size: approx. 21" long x 25 high Ejagham Mounted Warrio r The warlike Ejagham are also known as the Ekoi. After the language they speak. They are found in the Cross River province of Nigeria and in Camaroon. Their carvings. Covered in animal skin are unique in Africa. They are rare and sacred items which are now being offered for sale as traditional Ejagham social structure disintegrates. They are are recognized as among the most impressive of African artifacts. Large standing figures such as this one are not worn as headdresses. But form part of a display regalia of the Ejagham chiefs, who are also priests, known as Ntun. They are hidden in his compound and are brought out on ceremonial occasions to stand beside his thorne; their purpose is to remind the people of his power and authority. This amazing figure portrays ... morea mounted chief. Evoking the terrifying warriors who formerly dedicated human sacrifices to their gods. I do have the original spear which goes in his hand- I found it after taking the pictures. He also has a bow and quiver. The figure is carved of wood and carefully covered with fresh. Very fine antelope skin which is then smoked and cured. When the statue is hard, the leather is stained with pigments made from leaves and bark. The figure is clothed in a headress of feathers. A loin cloth and sandals. The warrior on a rearing horse may appear a Western concept. But in fact such figures have been made in Western Africa for hundreds of years. At over two feet high. This is a large and striking sculpture. Here is a unique opportunity to obtain a vanishingly rare piece of African ethnography offered at a bargain price.

And over into Cameroon, several ethnicities are found and among them the Ekoi. The cult of the leopard had a unifying effect on the scattered communities of the Cross River. Commercial, ritual, and social exchanges took place because of it. The Ekoi-speaking peoples(Anyang, Boki, Ejagham, Keaka, and Yako) are best known for their skin-covered face- and crest masks, which are unique in Africa. Earlier skins of slaves, later skins of antelopes, were used. When the mask is made fresh animal skin is stretched and tacked over the soft wood from which it is carved. After the skin dried, it was stained with pigments made from leaves and bark. Masks appear in performances by accomplished dancers at funerals, initiations of new members, agricultural and other events. Crest masks are attached to the basketry cap, which is held on the wearer’s head. Painter Fred Uhlman words- Most of the artists I admired. Picasso, Modigliani, Deraini, to mention only a few, had collected African art and had been profoundly influenced by it. Shortly afterwards I bought the Baule Fetish and the Baule bobbin which are still two of the finest pieces in my collection. It is eas
