The main economic staple in the region is the palm tree, the oil of which is extracted and sold to external markets. The Ibibio traditionally cultivate yams, plantains and maize. Ekpo is the Ibibio word for“ancestor, as well as the name of the principal masking society, its masks, and the dances that commemorate the deceased. ANTIQUE AFRICAN FANG EKET TRIBAL RITUAL VOODOO BASKET
TRIBAL RITUAL FETISH FIGURE STATUE CARVINGA reliquary bundle figure from the Fang The heart shaped face as well as the hairstyle locate the figure among the Ntumu. A northern Fang sub-group. The well-worn surface and the remains of offerings through the years the surface a dark brown patina. African Fang reliquaries are called Byeri. Fang tribe’s people would keep relics from their ancestors such as skulls. Bones and teeth in boxes often made from bark. Byeri were of huge importance to the Fang people. They favored group and personal enterprise, made fertile. Created wealth and assured the success of war parties and hunting trips. The belief in the passage of power from the dead to the living is key in Fang spirituality. Relic baskets often made of wicker called“bwété” were kept in a shady corner of the chief’s hut as a gesture ... moreof chiefdom. Bwété were revered with offerings and prayers to bring prosperity to the clan. The African reliquaries of the Obamba and Mahongwe people are called Osveba. These are stylized and abstract representations of an ancestors’ human form. Lines of descent are identified in the geometry created by carefully hammered motifs on copper strips. These reliquaries were placed on top of a relic box again made of bark. Wood or wicker or a wicker basket containing human bones. The prominent use of copper on these statuettes lends them a dazzling quality thought to repel enemies and bad spirits. Offerings were made to them in honor of the dead. Thus the relics became conduits between the world of the living and the dead. Large Tribal used Rare African figure from Eket. Nigeria. Hand carved from a single piece of wood. With color pigments. Height: 60 cm. The Eket. Numbering one million, are an Ibibio subgroup of farmers who do not fish unlike their Cross River neighbors. The main economic staple in the region is the palm oil. Which is extracted and sold to external markets. Every village is ruled by a group elders and the heads of extended families. Their decisions are enforced by members of the ekpo society who act as messengers of the ancestors. The Ekpo society requires that its initiates sponsor feasts for the town. Which foster the appearance of the redistribution of wealth by providing the poor with food and drink. In effect, this allows the disparity in wealth to be perpetuated in Ibibio society. Ekpo members are always masked when performing their ... morepolicing duties. And although their identities are almost always known, fear of retribution from the ancestors prevents most people from accusing those members who overstep their limits, effectively committing police brutality.

AFRICAN EKET TRIBE MOTHER GUARDIAN WOOD CARVING
Eket Tribe of Africa: African People(MOTHER GAURDIAN WOOD CARVING) From an Estate Sale. Location: Southeastern Nigeria. Africa Population: 1 million Language: Eket(Bantu) Neighboring Peoples: Igbo. Idoma, Bangwa Types of Art: The masks and accouterments of the Ekpo society make up the greatest works of art in Ibibio society. Drumming and music are also important elements in Ekpo ceremonies. The wooden sculpture from this area is often very detailed. And artists are just as likely to capture beauty as they are the hideous forms of evil spirits. History: The Eket are really a subgroup of the Ibibio. And their history is best described in that context. The Ibibio have lived in the Cross River area of modern day Nigeria for several hundreds of years, and though written information about them only exists in colonial records from the late 1800s ... moreon, oral traditions have them in the region much earlier than this. The Ibibio were very resistant to colonial invasions, and it was not until after the end of World War I that the British were able to gain a strong foothold in the region. Even at this time, however, the British found it necessary to incorporate Ibibio Ekpo traditions in order to impose indirect rule in the region. Economy: The main economic staple in the region is the oil palm. The oil of which is extracted and sold to external markets. Among the Ibibio, those of the highest rank in the Ekpo society(Amama) often control the majority of the community wealth. The Amama often appropriate hundreds of acres of palm trees for their own use and, with the profits they earn, ensure that their sons achieve comparable rank, effectively limiting access to economic gain for most members of the community. The Ekpo society requires that its initiates sponsor feasts for the town, which foster the appearance of the redistribution of wealth by providing the poor with food and drink. In effect, this allows the disparity in wealth to be perpetuated in Ibibio society. Political Systems: Individual villages are ruled by Ekpo Nd

Cracks in face at nose and in eye, one chignon in the back is broken and repaired with glue in base, chips and scratches in places, Idoma or Igala Headpiece Additional Information: This well carved headpiece mask with a chignon-hairstyle. The impressive face shows an open toothy mouth and scarification under the eyes. This headpiece is attributed to the Idoma or Igala people who live at the confluence of the Niger and Benue Rivers in Nigeria. IIt could also come from the Eket/Ikoi who make the same type of masks. The confluence of Niger and Benue Rivers is an ... morearea of shared art styles and social and religious traditions with a strong stylistic influence coming from the neighboring Igbo or Igala people. Among these people. Headpieces such as this were used as dance masks to pay respect to elders at funerals. This is an excellent example of Idoma or Igala headcrest with an authentic expression of the face found among the Idoma and Igala. The headpiece was repainted several time. Traces of different pigments can be seen on the surface. It shows sign of use and would stand out in a collection. I have examined this piece and agree with the description. Niangi Batulukisi. Nigeria: Old Tribal used nice African mask from Eket.
Old Tribal used African mask from Eket. Nigeria. Hand carved from a single piece of wood. With color pigments. Height: 26 cm. Ekpo members are always masked when performing their policing ... moreduties. And although their identities are almost always known, fear of retribution from the ancestors prevents most people from accusing those members who overstep their limits. Effectively committing police brutality.

A basket cap would be attached around the base of the handle to make it a headpiece or headdress. This mask comes from the southern Ibibio people known as Eket. However such masks have also been found among the Oron and Okobo Ibibio as well. Among the Eket the mask is identified with the female creation divinity called Eka Abassi. They are referred to as sun or moon masks. This mask reflects the mixed traditions that exist along the Lower Niger and Cross Rivers and the great Niger River delta as it flows into the Atlantic. A number of groups in this region share mask styles often drawing upon one another for imagery and perhaps even carvers who have some degree of mobility. The Ibibio live along the Niger River close to it's delta. Round masks or masks composed of a number of panels were used during celebrations for the yam planting and harvesting. The art of the Ibibio share with the Eket and southern Igbo traditions of style and in some instances use of masks and figures. For more examples see Iris Hahner-Herzog. Maria Kecskesi, Laszlo Vajda. The impressive face shows an open toothy mouth and scarification under the eyes. This headpiece is attributed to the Idoma or Igala people who live at the confluence of the Niger and Benue Rivers in Nigeria. IIt could also come from the Eket/Ikoi who make the same type ... moreof masks. The confluence of Niger and Benue Rivers is an area of shared art styles and social and religious traditions with a strong stylistic influence coming from the neighboring Igbo or Igala people.
