African Tribal Collection. Bakongo Nkisi Nail Fetish Figure. Description Authentic African antiquities& artefacts for discerning collectors(Most pieces ... moresourced by us direct from remote villages) THE AFRICAN TRIBAL COLLECTION Item Number: MA1135 Originates from: Congo Tribe: Bakongo Materials: Wood. Nails, Metal Blade Plates. Condition: Weathered; fair condition for its age. Approximate age: 100 Years Old Measurements cm: 97 Tall 42 Wide Fetishes were protective figures used by individuals. Families, or whole communities to destroy or weaken evil spirits, prevent or cure illnesses, repel bad deeds, solemnize contracts or oath-taking, and decide arguments. A diviner or holy person would activate the statue, using magical substances. Fetishes gained power and were effective because people believed in them. The nkondi are the most powerful of the nkisi. They were used to identify and hunt down unknown wrongdoers such as thieves. And people who were believed to cause sickness or death by occult means. They were also used to punish people who swore false oaths and villages which broke treaties. To inspire the nkondi to action, it was both invoked and provoked. Invocations, in bloodthirsty language, encouraged it to punish the guilty party. It would also be provoked by having gunpowder exploded in front of it, and having nails hammered into it. They were also used to literally"hammer out agreements"with clear implications as to what would happen to people who broke the agreements. Much of the profits raised from this sale will go a little way to help some impoverished children and villagers in the Moyen Cavally Region of Cote D'Ivoire and Liberia. We are supporting an orphanage there as well as several villages to which we supply seeds. Food and clean water solutions. This is a very nice Bakongo Fetish which I picked up in the D.R.C. in 2009 whilst in the Katanga Province. He is an imposing little character who stands ... moreat approximately 14 inches in height. Superb Mayombe Nkisi"Nail Fetish" Striking authentic fetish featuring enlarged head with encrusted sacrificial material. As characteristic of ... morethe Mayombe fetishes this has an array of nails and blades throughout the body as well as a horn. Wicker cord and varied sacrificial material. The cavity that one day packed the magical ingredients(bilongo) is open after decades of erosion and handling but the glass eyes still intact. As to the age of this figure-in my educated estimate- its should have at least 75 years in civilization plus 20 or 30 more when it was active and commissioned in its village. Certainly the price doesn't reflect the real value of this piece. It measures approximately 27 inches tall. I acquired this Power figure in 1989 at a sort of antique shop at Brussels. Belgium. African/Congo Nkisi Nkondi (Nail Figure),ca 1880 - 1920
I am offering for sale an unusual African/Congo wooden Nkisi Nkondi or nail figure with glass eyes and a glass mid-section. Nail figures were constructed from the wood of sacred trees and were created to have a menacing appearance in order to protect the village. It measures 15” tall x 8” wide x 6” deep. The wood has a crack along the left side ofthe base just by the foot and there are chips here and there. However. None of these appear to compromise its stability. This is an old work of art, ca 1880 to 1920, that has endured the test of time and simply shows wear commensurate with its age.

Museum Quality Bakongo Nkisi Fetish, Congo / Santeria / Palo Mayombe, Eggun
Nkisi(medicine) mirror fetishes are a unique and important phenomenon of Kongo sculpture. Historically. There were two types of nkisi. Public and private, with some having vital democratizing roles, as sources of empowerment for rural residents and individuals outside the court. At most basic, the nkisi represents a container of empowering materials or“medicines” called bilongo. The magical substances may be blood along with animal. Vegetable, and mineral matter. They are believed to invest the fetish figure with power and make it possible for the devotee to establish contact with the spirit. The“medicines” are generally secured in cavities in the stomach. Head, or back to activate the work with the empowering agent. The nkisi. Properly endowed with magic substances and additions by the nganga or doctor. Had the power to act in a number of ... moreways. There are four main types of nkisi. Used for different purposes. Nkondi are fetishes of ill omen. Usually brandishing a spear or a knife, while npezo are just as evil. But less menacing in attitude. Na moganga are benevolent figures. Which protect against sickness and dangerous spirits. They help the hunter and the warrior; while mbula protect against witchcraft. All nkisi can be used for a variety of purposes and their meaning is ambivalent. This Nkisi has an outstanding patina. Carved late 1970's, early 1980's. Measurements: 20" X 6" Materials: wood. Glass at eye sockets, glass covering stomach cavity where bilongo is stored. INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING PRICES HAVE INCREASED BY THE POST OFFICE. IF ACTUAL SHIPPING PRICE IS UNDER WHAT THE BUYER PAID I WILL REIMBURSE THE BUYER THE DIFFERENCE. IF OVER I WILL TAKE THE LOSS.

This brightly painted double-headed sculpture show the skill and imagination of the Kongo carver in his interpretation of a time- honored and culturally important form. Two heads emerge from a torso standing on shared legs one of which has a female genitalia sculpted on the thigh mirroring the male genitalia of the figure. This is a unique characterization of a blended male and female Nkisi power figure from the Kongo people or an associated group such as Yombe, Sundi or Vili, all from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Called Nkisi figures such as this were imbued with power through the offering or accumulation of magical materials known as Bongo that included cloth, cord and vegetative materials, and nails, knife blades or other iron objects hammered into the figures as evidence of ritual activity. The squared form carved on the stomac often held magical materials. Held magic or a mirror as in this figure that the owner, a ritual or medical practioner could peer into to determine the cause of illness or the future. Living mainly in the forested areas of south-west Nigeria. On both sides of the Niger River the Igbo number some ten million individuals. Mainly farmers and merchants, they also hunt and fish. NKISI VOODOO CONGO POWER FIGURE 19th Century SPIRIT ENTITY FETISH PALO MAYOMBE Description: This is a late nineteeth or possibly early twentieth century figure known as a Nkisi to certain tribes in the Kongo as well as practitioners of Palo Mayombe in South America. The figure is carved of wood and is of either a dog or monkey-animals known to travel between the world of spirits and the living combined with human elements. The nails driven through the back were done in a special ceremony to"activate" the figure and/or to banish evil. The figure is wearing a belt of small metalic charms and has a collar made from the pelt of some animal. The figure stands 10 inches tall.

Nail Fetish Nkisi N'kondi early 20th Cent African, with Magic
Excellent Nkisi N'Kondi. Probably originally from Zaire, early 20th Century, from the Vili or Bakongo people. Height 20" great facial character. I obtained it from a collector years ago as one of the best examples I have seen. Its weight is over 20 lbs. It will be carefully packed, padded, and insured. If you are an international buyer please send your postal code so that we can quote shipping costs. The swelling over the navel. Capped with a mirror, covers the carefully combined medicines(bilongo) which lend the figure its overwhelming power, as well as showing that he is armed with a flashing instrument of surveillance, able to plot the movements and intentions of jealous, dangerous persons. The magic is inhabited with the spirit of an ancestor, a dead person, or victim of sorcery. The nkisi chases away sorcerers and individuals ... moreguilty of adultery, theft, or murder. Each nail driven into a Nkisi n'kondi signifies an act of ritual commitment, an oath, or a pact sworn before the figure. The functions of such objects are various but they generally relate to moral intimidations. As a nkisi(charm. Medicine of God) the n'kondi is believed to be animate, its spirit generated and admonished by the bilongo. It becomes alerted by the shock of metal insertions: each nail summons the n'kondi to moral duty. The moral, public function of the n'kondi includes such serious matters as military agreements, penal regulations, oaths of innocence, and moral or juridprudential divinations. The will protect an innocent person, but if it turns out that the person swearing oath was guilty, they will seek him out and punish him with sudden death or illness. g.RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fuk%601d72f%2Bjw%60hquvg%3Eg-13efa2bddec-0x100-

From the modern day Republic of the Congo down through northern Angola. Known for their many art forms, as well as filed, sharpened teeth among Kongo women, the Kongo are a large and diverse ethnic group, consisting of a number of smaller subgroups. Art and sculpture is made for a wide variety of reasons among these people. Unique to the Kongo's region are the'nkisi, carvings considered extremely powerful by the people, and even by British colonialists who ordered them destroyed when found, fearing that they could be an effective resistance to the colonization of Africa. These"fetishes" are adorned with nails, ... moreor blades of metal, and are the only figures in African art embellished in this way. Nkisis aside, however, the Kongo produce many different styles of art, each of which have gained substantial attention and notoriety from collectors. This beautiful feminine nkisi figure displays subdued Kongo styling. Especially in the facial features. The woman is resting on her knees, carrying large receptacle upon her head wherein magic substances would be kept. The body of the figure is lithe and thin, with graceful curves, and rests on an integral base that allows the piece to stand on its own without support. The patina is mottled and encrusted in many areas, and pigment is also present on the piece though sparse. The pieces was probably more heavily pigmented at one time, but has worn off with age. Normal age-related wear marks are present, including notable age cracking, as well as minor dents, and rub marks. On the surface of the bowl's lid, there are patches of animal hair attached, and an animal hair'broom' is suspended from the woman's left arm. These plumes of fur were used to clear the ground where an ancestral sacrifice would be made, either of blood, alcohol, or

YOMBE NKISI POWER FIGURE D. R. CONGO FETISH BELGIAN GALLERY PROVENANCE
This is a very fine Yombe Nkisi male power figure from the D. R. Congo. Its abdominal cavity and protective mirror fragment are intact and still hold fetish material. The statue has a blackened encrusted patina with traces of kaolin on part of the face. Small carvings such as this would have been used for oath-taking and/or for healing purposes among tribal members. This small statue is elegantly well-made and well-proportioned. Judging from its sensitively formed face and its naturally supple upturned body stance. This must surely have been the work of a master carver. There are three age cracks on the backside of statue which do not in any way take away from either its appearance or stability. It is most probably a late 19 th century or. Angola and the Congo Republic– the Kongo occupy the region at the mouth of the Congo River. Numerous subgroups go to form the vast Kongo cultural complex, among which are the Vili, the Woyo and the Yombe. These tribes produce a diversity of artistic styles, with Kongo art being one of the best known. The Kongo demonstrate the extreme complexity of their traditions on major occasions, such as the investiture of a chief or at funerals. The Kongo pantheon was small: one all-powerful god who gave healing powers to the king, to the Nganga, and to the heads of cults. Besides their textiles of great renown, the Kongo had a funerary art of decorated steles and funerary statues in stone, very often depicting the chief seated cross-legged in a posture of reflection. Some of these statues were placed on tombs to aid the spirits of the dead to join the world of the deceased. They produced wood sculptures representing royal wives, hunters, musicians, and healers. Authentic African Tribal Sculpture Nkisi Fetish Figure Congo Zaire
This Congolese sculpture has a rich patina subtly conveying its many layers of tribal pumice and history of being cherished and touched by its owner. Nkisi sculptures are spiritually very powerful: either good or bad. In the case of this fetish. It appears to be a benevolent healing sculpture. Its power has been bestowed by its creator who is know to be a great spiritual healer. The medicine/ poultice or Nganaga is traditionally stored in the figures belly, head, back or eyes. In the case of this fetish, the power has been given its mirrored eyes. This standing figure crosses his large hands in the front of this stomach and stands with feet akimbo. This particular fetish has been naturalistically carved, as if to represent a young member of the tribe. The well-worn folded hands could suggest a funerary figure or a young political leader. ... moreThe mirrored eyes suggest a visionary. This beautiful figure has been in a private collection for 30-40 years. CUSTOMER FEEDBACK COMMENTS: Nuclear Blast Proof Packaging! Items in perfect condition! Recommend! p*s(909) Great seller! They are believed to invest the fetish figure with power and make it possible for the devotee to establish contact with the spirit. The“medicines” are generally secured in cavities in the stomach. Yombe (Nkisi) Nail Fetish Power Figure. Yoruba Songye Yaka Baule Dan Bakongo
Superb Mayombe Nkisi"Nail Fetish" Striking authentic fetish featuring enlarged head with encrusted sacrificial material. As characteristic of the Mayombe fetishes this has an array of nails and blades throughout the body as well as a horn. Belgium. Fetishes such as this were made to protect individual owners from sickness and death. This carving has a dark brown patina with significant traces of kaolin and reddish pigmentation. There are a few vertical age cracks which run over parts of the figures face as well as over its left shoulder and down to the base. The animal horn probably became loose and fell out of its receptacle in the past but this has been reattached with glue. The Songye(Songe) people live in the southern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo(formerly Zaire) and are governed by a central chief or authority figure responsible for enforcing special laws on this tribal group. The Songye(Songe) people are noted for their sculptural creativity. Usually done in service of their many secret societies.
